Its official sales disclosures track hardware and software units separately, but those figures do not show revenue or profit by category. The available figures also do not establish how much Nintendo earns from Nintendo Switch Online or other online services.
What Nintendo’s sales figures show
Nintendo reports worldwide cumulative hardware and software sales by platform. As of June 30, 2026, the company reported:
| Platform | Hardware units | Software units |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 23.68 million | 58.17 million |
| Nintendo Switch | 156.59 million | 1,561.95 million |
These are cumulative worldwide unit totals reported by Nintendo’s dedicated video game sales page, not revenue, margins, or profit. They show the scale of the platforms, but cannot tell you how much money Nintendo makes from selling a console or game.
How hardware contributes
Nintendo sells dedicated gaming hardware, putting its platforms in customers’ hands. Its disclosures count hardware units separately from software units, confirming hardware as a distinct product category. The published unit counts do not establish what Nintendo earns per console, its hardware margin, or whether hardware is profitable at a particular price.

How games contribute
Nintendo also sells software for its platforms and reports software units separately. Its leading Switch software totals, as of June 30, 2026, include:
| Game | Cumulative units |
|---|---|
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | 71.53 million |
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons | 50.29 million |
| Super Smash Bros. Ultimate | 38.14 million |
Nintendo’s top-selling title sales page notes that software totals include copies bundled with hardware or other products, as well as downloadable versions. They are not counts of standalone physical game sales. Nor do the totals reveal the revenue or profit from each title, the split between physical and digital sales, or the amount Nintendo receives from any particular copy.

What the figures say—and do not say—about online services
Nintendo Switch Online and other online services are relevant to the question of how Nintendo makes money, but the cited sales-unit disclosures do not quantify their financial contribution. Nintendo’s investor-relations news index points to earnings materials, but the available information here does not provide service-specific revenue figures. It therefore does not support a revenue share, a ranking of subscriptions against hardware or games, or a claim that subscriptions make up a major or recurring portion of Nintendo’s income.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why unit sales cannot rank Nintendo’s revenue streams
A unit total measures products sold or included in bundles; it is not a monetary comparison. Establishing which activity generates the most revenue or profit would require financial figures broken out by category and period. The available unit disclosures do not provide comparable figures for hardware, packaged or digital software, online services, licensing, mobile or IP-related income, or other categories. They also do not establish category-level margins or profit.

- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
So the supported answer is that Nintendo sells hardware and software, while the monetary contribution of its online services—and the relative revenue or profit of these activities—cannot be determined from these unit totals.
