For reviewing a match, start with the League of Legends client replay. To keep a shareable moment, record a built-in Highlight as a local video. For more deliberate camera work and cinematic footage from a replay, use League Director, Riot’s separate Windows tool. The choice comes down to whether you need to navigate a match, save a short clip, or stage a shot.
Which League of Legends recording tool should you use?
| Tool | Best for | What you get | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client replay | Reviewing decisions and navigating a match | An interactive replay used in the League client | Riot says replays expire when you update to a new patch and only the last 20 games are available in the client; check current client behavior. |
| Built-in Highlight | Saving a particular moment to share or edit | A local .webm video clip |
It captures a segment, not an interactive replay of the whole match. |
| League Director | Controlled camera work and cinematic replay footage | Replay captures in .webm or .png |
It is a separate Windows tool and may require Replay API configuration. |
This comparison reflects Riot’s feature descriptions, not comparative performance testing. The tools serve different purposes rather than being interchangeable.
Use the client replay for interactive match review
Riot’s Replays FAQ & Pro-Tips, dated March 27, 2026, describes downloading a replay from the End of Game screen or Match History. On the End of Game screen, use the replay button beside Advanced Details. After the replay downloads, that control changes to Watch Replay. Riot also says ranked replays can be downloaded from the Match History tab on a friend’s profile.
Find and navigate a replay
Once open, use the replay timeline and camera controls to move to a moment or follow a champion. Riot’s published tips suggest switching champion views with the number keys or Q/W/E/R/T; pressing the same key twice locks the camera. For smoother camera movement while panning, Riot recommends using the middle mouse button. These are Riot’s instructions, not independently tested recommendations.

Know the replay limits
Riot says replays last for a patch cycle and expire once you patch up. Its FAQ also says only the last 20 games are available in the client, and that in-game chat is not included in replays. Because those details are from Riot’s March 27, 2026 FAQ and client behavior can change, check the current client before relying on a replay for later review. Riot’s 2026 patch schedule lists patch 26.20 for October 7, 2026, while warning that planned dates may change: Patch Schedule – League of Legends.
Save a shareable moment with built-in Highlights
While watching a replay, use the client’s built-in recorder to start and stop a Highlight capture. Riot says Highlights save locally as .webm files, and that the client allows you to choose where replays and Highlights are saved. You can view, rename, and delete captured Highlights in the client’s profile section.

- 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
- HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240
- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
Riot’s FAQ says Highlight capture defaults to 720p; you can adjust the quality in-game while watching a replay, before you start recording. Riot says VLC can play Highlights and that WebM files work in modern HTML5-compatible browsers. A Highlight is a rendered video of the segment you capture, unlike a replay, which lets you revisit and navigate the match. Since Riot says replays expire on patching, saving a video clip locally is a practical way to keep a moment you want to retain.
Use League Director for controlled replay footage
RiotGames’ League Director project describes the tool as a way to stage and record videos from League replays. Its documented features include playback and speed controls, first-person camera controls, attaching the camera to a champion or minion, hiding interface elements, graphics settings, and a sequencer for keyframed camera positions. It can capture WebM video or PNG images.

Setup and compatibility
The project’s instructions are Windows-only. Its documented workflow is to install and start League Director, launch League and a replay, then use the in-game FPS Camera mode. The project says Very High graphics settings are required for additional rendering features such as skyboxes; after changing graphics settings, restart the replay for them to take effect.
If League Director does not connect, its FAQ says EnableReplayApi=1 in game.cfg may be needed. Riot’s Developer Portal League of Legends documentation likewise says the Replay API is disabled by default and documents enabling it with that config value. The API provides endpoints for playback, rendering, recording, and sequences. League Director is for footage from replays, not a general-purpose replacement for recording a live match.

Which tool fits your review workflow?
- To learn from a match: Open the client replay and use its timeline and camera controls to revisit decisions.
- To share a play: Capture a Highlight while watching the replay, then use the resulting local video file.
- To produce a more controlled shot: Use League Director with a replay if you need camera movement, keyframes, or other staging controls.
Keep in mind the distinction between an interactive replay and an exported clip: a video is convenient to store and share, while the replay offers more freedom to inspect different moments and viewpoints.
What to know about replay access in the current patch
Community reports have described a change associated with patch 26.20 that could limit replay access to matches you personally played. Riot’s official documentation cited here does not confirm that reported restriction, so it should not be treated as established policy. Check Riot’s support information or patch notes for confirmation rather than assuming access works one way or the other.
