What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose the console around the games you want to play, where you want to play them, and what you already own—not a brand-wide claim that one system is best. Nintendo Switch 2 is the clear fit if handheld or tabletop play matters; PS5 and PS5 Pro are options within PlayStation’s home-console family; Xbox Series X and Series S offer different configurations within Xbox’s family. Before buying, check the exact game, model, and full cost in your country.
Start with the games you want to play
Write down the specific games, series, or genres that matter to you, then confirm that each one is available on the console you are considering. A console’s brand or reputation is less useful than whether it runs the games you actually plan to play. If you already have a library on one platform, check which titles can carry over before treating a new console as a fresh start.

For a Switch library, Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2, but compatibility is not universal: some games may not be supported or fully compatible. Check the Nintendo compatibility information for specific titles.
Choose by where and how you play
Nintendo Switch 2: handheld, tabletop, or TV
Switch 2 is the option to investigate if you want one system that can move between handheld play, tabletop play, and a television. Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD, 256 GB of internal storage, Wi-Fi 6, and HDR10 support. In TV mode, output can reach 3840×2160 at 60 fps when the game and display support it. Nintendo estimates battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours depending on the game, so portable play time is not fixed. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications for the full details.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S: home-console families
If you expect to play primarily at home, compare the PlayStation and Xbox models around their specific game libraries, configurations, storage needs, and physical-media requirements. The Xbox family includes distinct Series X and Series S options; don’t assume that a price or specification for one describes the other. Xbox lists its current configurations in Xbox Series X|S – Every Console Option Available Now.
Compare PS5 with PS5 Pro on your actual display
Sony offers both PS5 and PS5 Pro. The Pro is positioned for improved visuals in supported games, so its benefits depend on the games you play and a display that can show the difference. Compare the live price and the exact disc-drive configuration rather than assuming every listing includes the same setup. Sony’s US site showed PS5 Pro “Buy from $899.00” on October 7, 2026; that is a regional, changeable starting-price listing, not a universal price. Sony announced recommended-price changes for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal on March 27, 2026, effective April 2, 2026. Check the PlayStation US site and Sony’s price-change announcement for current local details.

Check model, storage, and disc needs
- Physical games: Decide whether you want to buy, lend, or use disc-based games. Verify that the exact console configuration you’re pricing includes a disc drive or supports the drive you need.
- Storage: Consider how many games you expect to keep installed. Xbox says its storage expansion cards connect through a dedicated port and replicate the console’s custom SSD experience; card capacity and price should be checked against current listings. See Xbox’s Series X product information.
- Switch library: If moving from an earlier Switch, verify each important game’s compatibility rather than relying on the broad backward-compatibility description.
Budget for the complete setup, not just the console
Compare the hardware price in your country alongside the games you expect to buy, any online membership you need, additional storage, and accessories required for your setup. Nintendo notes that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is sold separately for applicable online features. PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass are also recurring-cost categories to check, but plans and prices vary and can change. Do not treat an old advertised price or another country’s price as a current local comparison.
Nintendo’s family page lists Switch models and US suggested prices; suggested prices are not guaranteed retailer prices. For PlayStation, Sony’s live regional listings reflect current availability and pricing. No directly comparable current Xbox US price is established here, so compare live listings for the exact Series X or Series S configuration rather than assuming a price ranking. The relevant official pages are Nintendo Switch Family, PlayStation US, and Xbox Series X.

Use this decision guide
| Your priority | What to investigate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Play handheld, tabletop, and on a TV | Nintendo Switch 2 | Availability of your games and compatibility of any earlier Switch titles. |
| Play in the PlayStation ecosystem | PS5 | Current local price, disc-drive configuration, and whether its features match your needs. |
| Consider a higher-tier PlayStation model | PS5 Pro | Whether your games support its visual benefits, your display can show them, and the live price justifies the difference. |
| Choose within Microsoft’s console family | Xbox Series X or Series S | The exact model, game availability, storage, and physical-media needs. |
| Keep overall spending down | Compare full setups across all three platforms | Hardware, games, memberships, storage, accessories, and physical-media requirements—not hardware price alone. |
Make the final choice
- List the games you most want and confirm they are available on the exact model under consideration.
- Decide whether portable play is essential. If it is, Switch 2’s handheld and tabletop modes are a defining advantage in how it can be used.
- For PS5 versus PS5 Pro, weigh supported-game visual improvements against your display and current local price.
- For Xbox, compare Series X and Series S as separate configurations, including storage expansion and disc needs.
- Add the likely cost of games, online access, storage, and necessary accessories to the hardware price.
- Factor in your existing library and the platform your friends use for the games you plan to play together.
