Start by identifying whether you have persistently low frame rates, brief hitches, screen tearing, or online rubberbanding: each points to a different kind of problem. Then test reversible causes in order—updates, laptop GPU selection, background apps, graphics settings, and a stable frame limit—changing one thing at a time. Shader compilation and deeper system changes apply only to games that support them.
First, identify what the game is doing
“Stutter” can describe several different symptoms. Note what you see, when it happens, and whether the frame-rate counter changes with it. EA Help distinguishes brief microstutters from screen tearing and connection-related rubberbanding in its PC graphics troubleshooting guide.
| Symptom | What it looks like | First direction to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Low FPS | Frame rate stays low for much of a drive, especially in demanding areas. | Test graphics load, system requirements, GPU selection, and background activity. |
| Brief hitch or microstutter | A short jolt or pause, sometimes even when average FPS looks high. | Track when it occurs; test background apps, frame pacing, and—if the game supports it—shader compilation. |
| Screen tearing | One image appears split across parts of the screen, as if different frames are shown at once. | Check the game’s and display’s frame-sync options rather than treating it as low FPS. |
| Rubberbanding | Your car or other players snap backward or forward during online play. | Investigate the connection and online conditions; this is not the same symptom as a graphics hitch. |
Record whether the issue began after a game patch, graphics-driver update, settings change, or hardware change. Also note whether it happens everywhere or only when entering a new area. Those details help separate an ongoing performance limit from a change-triggered or location-specific hitch.
Check updates, GPU selection, and background activity
- Install available Windows updates. Then check the graphics-card manufacturer’s support app or website for a current driver. EA includes Windows and graphics-driver updates among its PC troubleshooting steps.
- On a laptop, confirm the game uses the dedicated GPU. A game assigned to integrated graphics may perform poorly even when a discrete GPU is installed. Check the graphics preference in Windows or the laptop manufacturer’s graphics utility; exact labels vary by Windows version and device.
- Close unnecessary background apps for a test. This is especially useful when the PC is near the game’s minimum requirements. Disable overlays and utilities temporarily rather than uninstalling them immediately.
- Return custom CPU or GPU overclocks to factory defaults. Test the game again before changing anything else. EA warns that unsafe overclock settings can contribute to instability and overheating.
Minimum requirements do not guarantee smooth performance at maximum graphics settings. EA’s guidance is to reduce settings when a PC is close to a game’s minimum specifications.

Lower graphics settings one at a time
Reduce a demanding graphics option, drive the same route or visit the same area, and compare the result. If needed, restart the game after changing a setting. Testing one variable at a time makes it easier to tell whether rendering load is involved; changing several options together can obscure the cause.
- If lowering settings improves sustained FPS, the system may be struggling with the game’s rendering load at the original settings.
- If brief hitches remain unchanged at lower settings, graphics load may not be the only cause. Continue with the timing, frame-pacing, and background-app checks.
There is no universally best preset for every open-world racer. The right settings depend on the title, hardware, display, and the balance you want between image quality and smoothness.
Test a stable frame limit if FPS swings
If the game offers a frame-rate limiter, compare an uncapped run with a cap your system can maintain consistently. In its simulator-specific support guidance, iRacing Support says an uncapped rate can swing substantially and recommends testing a steady limit. Its monitor-refresh examples apply to iRacing, not as a universal target for other racing games.

- 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray-tracing performance.
- 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.

Use the same route and settings for each comparison. If a stable cap reduces the sense of uneven motion, keep the setting that feels better; if it does not, restore the previous value and continue troubleshooting. The appropriate limit depends on the game, hardware, and display.

Hitches during a first session or after an update can coincide with a game building shader data, but not every game handles shaders the same way. Check the official support page for the specific title and version before assuming this is the cause or looking for a compilation option.
For one title-specific example, Square Enix’s support article says its game builds a shader cache after installation and first play, and describes a Compile Shader menu option. It estimates compilation at 35–90 minutes depending on the PC. That procedure and estimate apply to that game, not to open-world racers generally. See Square Enix Support’s instructions for its title.

Isolate overlays and advanced system changes cautiously
If basic checks do not help, disable overlays and background utilities temporarily, then re-enable them one at a time while testing. NVIDIA’s advice for games performing poorly after optimization in the NVIDIA App includes checking for the latest game patch and driver and disabling third-party tools or background apps as a test. It is troubleshooting guidance for that situation, not evidence that the app causes every game’s performance problem. If the issue remains, NVIDIA asks users to report the affected game area and average FPS in its support article.
Before changing DirectX modes, BIOS settings, power plans, USB setup, or other low-level options, check the support guidance for your exact game and edition. EA suggests testing an alternate DirectX version for microstutter only when a game supports it, and recommends checking patch notes before switching back. iRacing lists issues involving USB configurations, BIOS or driver settings, sound drivers, replay storage, and display modes for its own simulator. These are title- and setup-specific leads, not general fixes for all open-world racers.
When the cause is still unclear
Keep a short record of controlled tests: the affected area, average FPS, whether the problem is a persistent slowdown or brief hitch, and the one setting or app changed each time. If you contact the game’s support team, include the game and edition, platform, CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows and driver versions, display refresh rate, current graphics settings, and when the problem began. That information helps support distinguish a game-specific issue from a broader PC or connection problem.
