You can play PS5 games remotely without a PlayStation Portal by using Sony’s PS Remote Play app on a compatible phone, tablet, computer, Android TV device, or another PlayStation console. The right alternative is usually the screen and controller you already own. These setups stream games from your PS5; they do not replace the console. If you need to play without your PS5, that is a separate cloud-streaming question.
Which PlayStation Portal alternative fits your setup?
Start with the device you already have, then check its operating-system and controller compatibility. Sony’s official PS Remote Play app covers more device types than a dedicated handheld, but the screen, controls, and portability differ.

There is no supported side-by-side benchmark establishing one of these options as universally faster or more reliable than the others. Choose based on the screen you prefer, controller fit, portability, Wi-Fi where you play, and whether you need cloud access without your own PS5.
Can you use a phone instead of a PlayStation Portal?
Yes. Install Sony’s PS Remote Play app on a compatible phone and connect it to your PS5. You can use on-screen controls or a supported controller; a phone with a Backbone One – PlayStation Edition provides a handheld-style arrangement, while a Bluetooth DualSense offers a separate controller option. In either case, the phone displays a stream from the console rather than running the PS5 game itself.

iPhone and iPad compatibility
Sony’s US compatibility page lists DUALSHOCK 4 over Bluetooth or on-screen controls for Apple devices running iOS 14 or later. DualSense over Bluetooth requires iOS 14.5 or later. iPhone models running iOS 15 or later are listed as compatible with Backbone One – PlayStation Edition. Check the device and connector requirements before buying a controller.
Android compatibility
Sony lists Android 9 or later for on-screen controls, Android 10 or later for DUALSHOCK 4, and Android 12 or later for DualSense. The Backbone One – PlayStation Edition is listed for Android 10.0 or later, but phone fit, connector type, and device support still matter. Backbone says this PlayStation Edition is the only Backbone model currently on its Android compatibility list for PlayStation Remote Play.

Can a tablet, PC, or Mac replace the Portal?
Yes, if a larger screen matters more than a built-in handheld format. Sony’s official app supports compatible phones and tablets as well as Windows PCs and Macs. For the computer app, Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers. Keyboard controls are available only in games that support hardware keyboards, so a keyboard is not a universal controller substitute.

Can you play PS5 remotely on an Android TV?
Sony lists Android TV OS 12 or later for Remote Play and names Chromecast with Google TV 4K and HD models and BRAVIA XR A95L among currently available compatible devices. You will also need a controller. Sony notes that greater distance between the PS5 or PS4 and the remote TV can increase latency, so the network route and room layout matter as well as the TV device.

Does Remote Play work on Steam Deck?
Not through an official Sony Steam Deck app. A third-party route was reported by Tom’s Hardware on August 12, 2026: Asobi Remote Play was available as a pre-release Steam playtest, with reported PS5 Remote Play and claimed access to some PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streamed titles. That status and feature set may change, so check the app’s current availability and requirements before relying on it. Treat it as unofficial and potentially experimental, not as a supported Sony configuration.

What you need for Sony Remote Play
A PS5 or PS4 console
Sony’s support page is explicit: “A PS5 console or PS4 console is required for Remote Play.” The app connects to games installed on your console; a phone, computer, or handheld is only the remote screen and control setup.

A supported device, app, and controller
Install the official PS Remote Play app on a supported device, sign in with the PlayStation account associated with your console, and pair a controller if the device and game require one. Sony’s compatibility requirements vary by operating system and controller. Read the current PS Remote Play support page before troubleshooting or buying accessories.
A suitable network
Sony’s PlayStation Portal page specifies broadband Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience; actual quality depends on network conditions. These figures are Portal requirements and guidance, not a guarantee of performance for every Remote Play device or home network. A weak or congested connection can affect the stream even when the device itself is compatible.
Games and features that may not work
Some content cannot be used through Remote Play. Sony lists games that require peripherals such as PS VR, PS VR2, or PlayStation Camera, along with restrictions involving Share Play, PlayStation Plus Premium game streaming, Blu-ray and DVD playback, VR modes, music, and video services. Check Sony’s support page if a particular game or feature is unavailable.

Remote Play versus Portal cloud streaming
Remote Play streams a game installed on your paired PS5. Portal cloud streaming is different: Sony announced that, from November 5, 2025, eligible PlayStation Plus Premium members could stream select digital PS5 games in their library and compatible games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog without connecting to their own PS5. Sony said a cloud session could continue when the member’s PS5 was off or being used by another account.
This distinction matters if your goal is to play away from your console or when someone else is using it. Cloud streaming has its own membership, account, game-eligibility, and regional conditions; check Sony’s current listings before subscribing or choosing a device on that basis.
