Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For PlayStation Portal, start by enabling Remote Play on the PS5 and setting the console to stay reachable in Rest Mode. For a smoother stream, PlayStation recommends wiring the PS5 to the router, using 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal, and aiming for a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps. The console settings enable access; the network setup and Portal’s resolution cap affect the streaming experience.
Enable Remote Play on the PS5
On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play for the user who will play. PlayStation says this is a per-user setting and normally only needs to be enabled once, unless it is changed later. See PlayStation’s PS Portal Remote Play guide and its PS5 Remote Play setup instructions.

The PS5 needs an internet connection, the PS5 and Portal must be signed into the same account, and PlayStation advises keeping the PS5 system software up to date.
Allow Portal to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode
If you want Portal to wake the console and connect while it is resting, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable both:

These options make the PS5 available for a network wake from Rest Mode. They do not improve the quality of a Remote Play session that is already connected. PlayStation documents the setup in its PS Portal guide and PS5 Remote Play guide.
Use PlayStation’s recommended network setup
PlayStation’s recommendations focus on the connection between the console, router, and Portal:
Rank #2
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.

- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable if possible.
- Connect Portal over 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- If the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, connect the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Disable router band steering if possible.
- PlayStation recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience.
The 15 Mbps figure is PlayStation’s recommendation, not a tested minimum or guarantee that a connection will be smooth. A speed test alone does not establish how well a Remote Play session will perform. PlayStation also cautions that public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control. These recommendations appear in its PS Portal Remote Play guide.
If you need to connect the PS5 by cable, an Ethernet cable is the relevant accessory; PlayStation does not specify a required cable category, length, or brand.

Set Portal’s maximum streaming resolution
The resolution control is on Portal, not in a PS5 video-output menu. Open Portal’s quick menu and choose Max Resolution. PlayStation says Remote Play video quality adjusts automatically according to internet quality; its current US accessories guide lists 1080p High Quality and 1080p Standard as maximum options. See PlayStation’s Portal guide and the Portal system software update notes, which identify 1080p High Quality as an option for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming.
Available options can vary with Portal software version. PlayStation’s guidance says quality adjusts automatically, but does not promise that lowering the maximum resolution will fix a weak or unstable connection. The cited guidance does not recommend changing the PS5’s output resolution as a Remote Play troubleshooting step.

Troubleshoot a Portal that cannot find the PS5
- Confirm the PS5 and Portal are signed into the same account and that Remote Play is enabled for the intended PS5 user.
- If Portal has not connected recently, try connecting while near the PS5 before attempting a remote connection from outside your home. PlayStation recommends this as an initial check.
- If the console still cannot be found, connect the Portal and PS5 to the same network. On the PS5, select Pair Device, then enter the number shown on the console into the connecting device. PlayStation describes manual pairing in its PS5 Remote Play instructions.
Which settings matter for which problem?
| Goal | Setting or change | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Enable Remote Play | PS5: Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play | Allows the selected user to use Remote Play. |
| Connect while the PS5 is resting | PS5 Rest Mode: Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network | Keeps the console reachable and permits network wake from Rest Mode. |
| Improve the connection path | Ethernet for PS5; 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal; same Wi-Fi network if PS5 is wireless | Matches PlayStation’s recommended network setup. |
| Choose a stream quality ceiling | Portal quick menu > Max Resolution | Sets the maximum available stream resolution; quality still adjusts automatically. |
PlayStation’s cited support pages do not provide publication dates for these recommendations. The settings and available Portal options may change with software updates or vary by region, so use the current labels on your devices.
