First identify the console and controller model: pairing steps are not interchangeable. For a Switch Joy-Con that works while attached but will not connect wirelessly, try Nintendo’s SYNC and re-pairing steps below. For a PS5 DualSense, pair it with a USB cable and the PS button, then use PlayStation’s reset procedure if needed. Xbox-specific console pairing steps are not established here, so use current Xbox Support instructions for your controller model rather than trying another platform’s button sequence.
Start by identifying the failure
Check that the controller is intended for your console and has charge. For wireless problems, bring it closer to the console and reduce possible sources of wireless interference where practical. Then determine which situation applies:
- Wireless pairing: the controller does not connect to the console without a cable.
- Attached but not recognized: the console does not recognize the controller even when it is physically connected. This is different from the Switch Joy-Con wireless case described below.
- Works in menus, not in a game: check whether the game supports that controller configuration and whether its player limit has been reached.
Fix a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con that will not pair wirelessly
Nintendo’s guidance here applies when a Joy-Con works correctly while attached to the Switch but does not sync or register as a wireless controller.
- Press the Joy-Con’s SYNC button once, then press another button to turn it on again.
- If it still will not connect, delete the pairing information for wireless controllers, then pair the Joy-Con again.
- Move the controller closer to the console, check for wireless interference, and make sure the battery is not low or depleted.
- If the problem happens in a particular game, confirm the game supports the controller configuration you are using and that the player limit has not been exceeded.
Nintendo’s Joy-Con wireless troubleshooting guide says a Joy-Con may need service if these steps do not resolve the issue.

If Bluetooth audio is connected
Nintendo states that a Switch system can pair no more than two wireless controllers while a Bluetooth audio device is connected. To pair controllers, ensure the console has the latest system update, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order, hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second, then press L and R or SL and SR together on the controllers being used. Pair or reset a PS5 DualSense controller
Pair it with the PS5
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense to the console with the USB cable included with the controller.
- Press the PS button.
- Once the controller has enough charge, disconnect the cable to use it wirelessly.
PlayStation says a DualSense pairs with only one PS5 console at a time. To use it with a different PS5, pair it with that console. If the included cable is missing or unsuitable, the wired pairing step requires a USB cable that supports data transfer; not every USB-C charging cable does. Reset it if connection problems continue
- Turn off the PS5.
- Disconnect the controller from the official USB cable.
- Using a pin or similar tool, press and hold the reset button in the small hole next to the Sony logo on the back of the controller for at least five seconds.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 using the official USB cable, then press the PS button.
If you can operate the console, PlayStation also advises installing the latest available PS5 system software. If resetting does not fix the controller, use PlayStation’s support or repair route.
What to do if an Xbox controller will not connect
Xbox-specific pairing and reset instructions are not established here. Confirm that the controller is intended for your Xbox console, check its charge, and follow the current, model-specific procedure from Xbox Support. Do not assume that the Nintendo SYNC sequence or PS5 USB-and-PS-button procedure applies to an Xbox controller.

When to seek service
If the correct platform procedure, re-pairing or reset, and basic charge and distance checks do not resolve the connection, use the console maker’s official support or repair path. Nintendo identifies service as a possible next step for a Joy-Con that still will not connect wirelessly; PlayStation directs users toward support or repair if DualSense troubleshooting does not help.
