There is no established, universal PC specification that guarantees playable PlayStation 5 emulation. RPCS5 publishes specific minimum and recommended tiers, while other projects describe different requirements and remain experimental or in development. Treat those figures as each project’s own guidance—not as independently verified benchmarks or a promise that a particular game will run.
What hardware does RPCS5 recommend?
RPCS5 publishes the most detailed component tiers among the project documentation covered here. The figures below are RPCS5’s own requirements; they have not been independently benchmarked, and they should not be read as a standardized PS5-emulation specification.
| Component | RPCS5 minimum | RPCS5 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | x64 Intel or AMD processor with 8 cores | 8 cores and 16 threads or more; AMD Zen 3 or newer, or Intel Alder Lake or newer |
| Graphics | AMD RX 400 series or newer, NVIDIA GTX 10 series or newer, or Intel Arc 3 or newer | AMD RX 5000 series or newer, NVIDIA RTX 2000 series or newer, or Intel Arc 7 or newer |
| Memory | 8 GB | At least 16 GB, dual-channel |
| Storage | SSD or HDD | SSD for the emulator |
RPCS5 adds that CPUs without AVX-512 and with fewer than eight cores may run poorly. It calls 8 GB the absolute memory minimum and recommends dual-channel RAM. Its stated storage estimates are 1,024 MB for base emulator data, 8 GB for cache, and 512 MB per game. These are project-published figures, not general standards for emulating a PS5. The project page lists release 0.4.2 as released on 2026-09-09; that is a release date, not a benchmark. See RPCS5’s requirements and stability information.
What do other PS5 emulator projects require?
SharpEmu
SharpEmu says a Vulkan-capable GPU and a current graphics driver are required, but the repository passage reviewed does not give a comparable detailed CPU, GPU-tier, and RAM list. The project calls its platform support experimental and says compatibility and performance vary by game, operating system, and GPU driver. It describes work that can load real-game eboot.bin files, execute native CPU instructions, and partially handle GPU-related functionality, while identifying accuracy and infrastructure—not game-specific compatibility—as its current focus. See the SharpEmu repository.

shadPS5
shadPS5 lists an informal desired configuration of an AVX2-capable CPU, Vulkan-capable graphics (illustrated with a GTX 1060 or RX 560 as a minimum), and 16 GB RAM. However, its site labels the project as in development and says games are not yet playable. Those figures therefore do not establish a dependable minimum for PS5 emulation overall. See the shadPS5 project site.
Will a PC with these specs run PS5 games?
Not necessarily. A component list is not the same as demonstrated compatibility: emulator projects are at different stages, and support can vary by game, operating system, graphics API, and driver. RPCS5 describes itself as being in a very early development stage and warns that errors, bugs, and games that fail to boot can occur. A gameplay video or a computer that meets a project’s listed tier does not establish that a given game is broadly playable.

Before buying or upgrading hardware, check the latest requirements for the specific emulator release and whether it supports the game you want to run. These projects’ specifications and compatibility status can change.
How to use the requirements when choosing hardware
- Check CPU support first. For RPCS5, compare your processor with its eight-core minimum and recommended architecture and thread count. Its warning about AVX-512 and fewer than eight cores is specific to that project’s guidance.
- Confirm graphics API and driver support. SharpEmu specifically requires Vulkan and a current graphics driver. A listed GPU generation alone does not guarantee that an emulator or game will work.
- Compare RAM configuration, not just capacity. RPCS5 recommends at least 16 GB in dual-channel; the project calls 8 GB its absolute minimum.
- Allow for storage needs. RPCS5 recommends an SSD and publishes separate estimates for emulator data, cache, and each game. It allows an SSD or HDD at its stated minimum.
- Verify the target game and emulator version. Requirements are project-specific, and compatibility is not established by meeting a component tier.
Do not use PS4 emulator requirements as a PS5 specification
shadPS4 is a PlayStation 4 emulator, not a PS5 emulator, so its quickstart requirements should not be transferred to this question. Its documentation also notes that games, updates, and DLC are copyrighted and must be dumped from the user’s own copy. SharpEmu likewise says users are expected to use legally obtained games and that its project does not include proprietary game data or firmware. See the shadPS4 project documentation for its PS4-specific context.
