The five Zero Essence for The Ghost in the Portrait are revealed by watering five Zero drawings in the Mirror Lair. Check the window display, staircase, furniture table, skeleton display and stacked dice. The quest also asks you to sabotage the Lucky Wheel for five cogs, then craft and use Real Ghostly Paint Thinner to free Zero.
Before you search: unlock and start the quest
The Ghost in the Portrait is the third weekly Oogie Boogie quest in Disney Dreamlight Valley’s Season of Scares. It follows The Oogie Boogie Contract. The quest sends you through the Strange Mirror in Scrooge McDuck’s Store, where you inspect the Haunted Portrait and a Memory, confirm that the latest Lucky Wheel Ticket is in your Inventory, and speak with Oogie Boogie and Scrooge.
The event announcement schedules the quest for October 7, 2026. To keep the event questline available to complete at your own pace, start its first quest before November 4, 2026. The event’s stated prerequisites for beginning Oogie Boogie’s quests are the Peaceful Meadow, Scrooge McDuck’s Store and Chez Remy; after unlocking them, check your Mail and go to the store. Get the Lucky Wheel Cogs
- Place the Plain Gift Box near the right stairs on the first floor of the Mirror Lair.
- Use your Pickaxe on the Lucky Wheel.
- Pick up the five Lucky Wheel Cogs that appear.
Use the first Ghostly Paint Thinner
The quest supplies Ghostly Paint Thinner. Add it to your Watering Can, then use it on Zero’s Haunted Portrait as directed. This first application does not finish the quest: after you speak with Merlin, you must find and water five Zero motifs in the Mirror Lair. Quest objectives and item sequence

Find and water all five Zero motifs
Water each drawing or motif. Zero Essence appears on the ground after you water a motif, so collect it before moving on. The five listed spots are:
- Right-hand window display: inspect the display by the window.
- Behind the right side of the staircase: check the area around the stairs carefully.
- Right-side furniture display table: look over the display table.
- Behind the skeleton display: check beside the vault door.
- Stacked dice: inspect the dice opposite the skeleton display.
If you have only four essences, revisit the staircase and display areas and check that you watered each motif. Zero Essence locations

Craft and apply Real Ghostly Paint Thinner
- Bring all five Zero Essence to a crafting station in the Mirror Lair.
- Craft Real Ghostly Paint Thinner using the five essences.
- Open Inventory and add the finished thinner to the Royal Watering Can.
- Water the correct Haunted Portrait again to free Zero.
The quest has two thinner stages: the supplied Ghostly Paint Thinner used earlier, and the Real Ghostly Paint Thinner you craft from the five essences. The crafted version is the one to apply to the Royal Watering Can for the final portrait step. Recipe and item use Quest objectives
