Choose PlayStation Portal if you want a dedicated handheld for playing games installed on your PS5; choose Backbone One if you would rather use a compatible phone with the PS Remote Play app. Neither option replaces the need for a suitable network, and the available official information does not establish that one delivers lower latency, better image quality, or better value.
How the two options differ
| What matters | PlayStation Portal | Backbone One |
|---|---|---|
| Screen and form | A dedicated remote-play device with its own screen. | A phone-controller setup that uses a compatible phone as the screen. |
| What it connects to | A PS5; Portal is not compatible with PS4. | A compatible iPhone or Android phone running the PS Remote Play app; the app can connect to PS5 or PS4. |
| Compatibility baseline | Requires a PS5 and a PlayStation account. | Sony lists Backbone One PlayStation Edition compatibility with iPhones running iOS 15 or later and Android phones running Android 10 or later. Confirm exact phone and controller variant fit before buying. |
| Network guidance | Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are stated requirements and guidance, not a performance guarantee. | Remote Play uses broadband or mobile data; performance and data use depend on network conditions. |
| Audio information | Sony lists 3.5 mm wired headsets or earbuds and wireless devices using PlayStation Link. | No Backbone-specific audio specification is established here; check the phone and exact controller model. |
| Subscription distinction | PS Plus Premium is required for Portal cloud streaming, but is not a blanket prerequisite for remote-playing compatible games installed on your PS5. | Using Remote Play does not itself imply a Premium subscription. Online multiplayer may have a separate PS Plus requirement for a given game. |
Choose Portal if you want a dedicated PS5 handheld
Portal is the more direct fit if you want a device designed around remote play rather than attaching a controller to your phone. For the standard remote-play route, the game must be compatible and installed on your PS5. The console needs broadband access, must be powered on or in Rest Mode, and must be paired with Portal. Portal does not connect to a PS4.

Sony says Portal does not support games that require PS VR or PS VR2, or additional peripherals outside the specified PlayStation controllers. Sony also excludes games that must be streamed on PS5 using PS Plus Premium from the ordinary installed-game remote-play path.
Portal and Wi-Fi
Sony’s US product page, accessed October 7, 2026, states a minimum Wi-Fi speed of 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. These figures describe Sony’s guidance; they do not guarantee smooth play. Sony notes that the game and network conditions affect performance.

Those operating-system baselines do not confirm that every phone fits every Backbone One variant. Check the exact controller model and connector against your phone before buying. The official information cited here does not establish a universal connector matrix, phone battery impact, current price, or a comparative ergonomic advantage.

Remote play is not the same as Portal cloud streaming
With remote play, Portal connects to your own PS5 and plays compatible games installed on that console. That use does not make PS Plus Premium a blanket requirement. A game’s online multiplayer may have its own PlayStation Plus requirement.
Cloud streaming on Portal is a separate feature. Sony says it requires PS Plus Premium, a PlayStation account, an eligible adult account, an eligible region, and suitable broadband. Game and catalogue availability can vary by region and over time. Do not treat cloud streaming eligibility as a requirement for ordinary remote play from your PS5.
