Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us and Uncharted are both character-centered, cinematic PlayStation series, but they aim for different experiences: The Last of Us is framed as an emotional survival story, while Uncharted leans into globe-spanning adventure, historical mysteries, and blockbuster action. Comparing them with God of War, Horizon, and Ghost of Tsushima shows how differently PlayStation games can use character arcs, exploration, and setting to drive a story.

What makes Naughty Dog’s two series different?

The clearest contrast is the kind of pressure each story places on its characters. The Last of Us follows Joel and Ellie through a civilization ravaged by infection and violence, emphasizing their relationship and the costs of choices made under survival pressure. PlayStation describes The Last of Us Part I as a single-player story and presents its setting and central relationship as the foundation of the experience.

Uncharted is also character-driven, but its official framing is more adventurous: Nathan Drake and other memorable characters pursue historical mysteries across varied locations, amid cinematic action set pieces and conflicting motivations. PlayStation’s description emphasizes exploration, globe-trotting, and blockbuster action.

That makes The Last of Us a useful example of intimate relationships under sustained danger, while Uncharted offers a more exuberant adventure register. This is an interpretation of how the series are presented, not an objective ranking of their writing or quality.

How do other PlayStation story-driven games compare?

These games share an emphasis on story and recognizable protagonists, but their worlds and play structures put different elements in the foreground.

Game or series Narrative center and tone How setting and play support the story How it differs from Naughty Dog
The Last of Us Joel and Ellie’s relationship and the difficult choices of a survival journey. Stealth, combat, travel, and environmental details reinforce personal stakes. A close, survival-focused relationship drama.
Uncharted Characters pursuing historical mysteries in a cinematic adventure. Exploration, varied locations, and action set pieces create a globe-trotting feel. A lighter, more overtly adventurous blockbuster mode.
God of War (2018) A father and son’s mythic journey; PlayStation calls it a single-player, story-driven action-adventure. A forward-moving character arc coexists with opportunities to explore a large world. It shows how story momentum can remain central even when players can pause to explore.
Horizon Aloy’s journey in a world where humanity has regrouped into tribes among advanced machines and remnants of an earlier civilization. Machines, ruins, landscapes, and tribal cultures make worldbuilding a major part of the identity. Mystery and world-revelation are especially prominent alongside the protagonist’s journey.
Ghost of Tsushima Jin confronts a consequential choice as Mongol forces defeat the samurai on Tsushima. The historical invasion and struggle for the island frame his personal and cultural conflict. Its story is grounded in a historical-war setting and a protagonist’s ethical choices.

PlayStation’s official descriptions are useful for identifying each game’s intended emphasis, but they are promotional framing rather than neutral comparative criticism. The table describes differences in focus; it does not claim that one game tells its story better.

  • Music player that includes 140+ tracks across all seasons, art gallery, 3D model viewer with playable voice lines, & new 3D front end.

Does “story-driven” mean the same kind of game?

No. A story can drive a game while leaving different amounts of room for detours, discovery, and optional activity. God of War (2018) is a particularly clear example of forward momentum paired with exploration. Its creative director, Cory Barlog, told Game Informer, in a quotation attributed by PlayStation: “Linearity can drive you through this fantastic story – you’re always going to be driven forward by the development and arc of the characters – but at any given point in this game, you can pull the lever on the bus and stop to look around, and then get back on the bus and keep going.” The official game page likewise describes a story-driven journey through a large world.

That distinction helps when choosing between these games. If you want the relationship and survival stakes to stay close to the center, The Last of Us is the more direct fit. If you want a character arc within a broader mythic world that invites exploration, God of War illustrates another approach. Neither structure is inherently more story-driven; they distribute attention differently between the main journey and the surrounding world.

  • Fast loading: Initial loading times are near instant, and seamless after the first instance thanks to the PS5 console’s SSD – so you can pick up where you left off in the story and load specific encounters and chapters more quickly.
  • Haptic feedback: DualSense wireless controller haptic feedback support for every weapon elevates combat encounters, and environments are brought to life through DualSense wireless controller haptic sensations of subtle falling rain, the crunch of stepping on snow and more.

  • 3D Audio: Designed to make use of the PS5 console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, Naughty Dog’s newly upgraded audio engine delivers richer soundscapes, bigger explosive moments and more visceral gameplay through compatible stereo headphones (analogue or USB) or TV speakers.

Which comparison should guide your choice?

  • For survival tension and a central relationship: start with The Last of Us, whose official framing centers Joel and Ellie’s dangerous journey.
  • For cinematic action and historical adventure: Uncharted foregrounds mysteries, travel, and set pieces.
  • For a character arc with room to explore: God of War balances a story-led journey with world discovery.
  • For science-fiction worldbuilding: Horizon makes machines, ruins, and the societies living among them central to the premise.
  • For historical conflict and a protagonist’s difficult choices: Ghost of Tsushima places Jin’s story within the invasion of Tsushima.

These are entry-point suggestions based on premise and emphasis, not claims about which game is best written. A fair comparison depends on what matters to you: relationships, tone, pacing, exploration, or the setting itself.

Where can you start with The Last of Us?

The Last of Us Part I is a concrete starting point for the series. PlayStation identifies it as a ground-up remake released on September 2, 2022, and lists versions for PS5 and PC, as well as a PS5 Blu-ray edition. Because editions and platform catalogs can change, check PlayStation’s current page for the version that applies to you. The page also claims the game has received more than 200 Game of the Year awards; that is PlayStation’s promotional award-count claim, not evidence that it is narratively superior to the games compared here.

“PlayStation exclusive” also needs a little care: The Last of Us is a PlayStation franchise, but The Last of Us Part I is listed by PlayStation for PC as well as PS5. The platform availability of a particular edition should not be confused with the identity or history of the franchise. For the other games, PlayStation’s Horizon description and its Ghost of Tsushima description outline the contrasting worlds and conflicts that make them useful comparisons.
