To restrict Fortnite purchases, set a six-digit Parental Controls PIN in the child’s Epic Games account and enable the Epic payment approval setting. That PIN only covers real-money purchases processed by Epic; purchases billed through a console or mobile storefront need that platform’s own parental controls. V-Bucks spending on paid random-reward items is a separate permission.
Set up parental controls in the Epic account
- Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account and open Parental Controls in the account portal.
- Create a six-digit PIN. Epic requires the PIN to change parental-control settings later. Keep it private and choose one different from PINs used for devices or payment cards.
- Review the purchase permissions and enable the PIN requirement for real-money purchases made using Epic payment.
- Choose whether the player may spend V-Bucks, or content purchased with V-Bucks, on paid random-reward items. This permission is distinct from approval of a real-money payment.
- Save the settings and keep the PIN where the child cannot access it.
Epic’s setup instructions say the PIN is required to change controls in the future. Menu labels and feature availability can change, so use the current account portal if a label differs.
Know which purchases the Epic PIN can stop
The Epic payment setting applies when a real-money purchase is processed through Epic. It does not approve or block every Fortnite purchase. Epic says the setting does not affect payments made on PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch, or purchases made with in-game currency such as V-Bucks. The platform or storefront that bills the purchase needs its own payment controls.
| Purchase or control | What governs it |
|---|---|
| Real-money purchase processed through Epic | Epic Parental Controls PIN, when the Epic payment permission is enabled. |
| Purchase billed by PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch | That platform or storefront’s payment approval settings; the Epic PIN does not apply. |
| Purchase made using V-Bucks already in the account | Not covered by the Epic real-money payment PIN. |
| V-Bucks spent on paid random-reward content | The separate paid random items permission, where that feature is available. |
On PC, Epic also suggests removing stored payment methods as an additional safeguard against Epic purchases. This does not replace the PIN or control payments billed by another storefront.

Set the platform controls for the child’s device
First identify where the child plays Fortnite and how the transaction is billed. Epic’s parental controls overview links to platform guidance. Follow the current instructions for the relevant console, Windows, iOS, or Google Play account and configure purchase approval there. A restriction in Epic’s account cannot substitute for a storefront setting.
- Console: Use the console account’s family or spending controls for purchases billed through that console.
- Mobile: Use the applicable Apple or Google account’s purchase controls for transactions billed through its store.
- PC: Check the payment route. Epic PIN controls apply to Epic-billed purchases; a different storefront has separate controls. Removing stored Epic payment methods can add friction for Epic-billed spending.
Understand V-Bucks and paid random items
Turning on the Epic real-money purchase PIN does not lock an existing V-Bucks balance. If the concern is paid random-reward content, set the separate permission governing whether the player can spend V-Bucks—or V-Bucks-purchased content—on those items. Epic notes that paid random items are not available in every region, so the setting may not appear for every account.

Account age and Cabined Accounts
Epic describes a Cabined Account as an account for a younger player, generally when the player indicates they are under 13 or under the local age of digital consent, whichever is higher. While parental consent is pending, the player can still play Fortnite and use previously earned or purchased content, but real-money purchases and certain features, including voice or free text chat, are disabled. These pending-consent restrictions are separate from purchase permissions a parent configures on an account.
Epic says a Fortnite gift card can be added to a Cabined Account’s Epic balance for Epic game purchases, excluding Fortnite Crew subscriptions. Adding balance makes spending possible within that stated scope, so it is not a purchase-restriction method.

Epic’s under-13 daily limit is not a universal spending cap
Epic states that accounts where the player indicated they are under 13 have a daily $100 limit on purchases made using Epic Games payment. A purchase that would exceed the limit requires a parent or guardian’s PIN to override and complete. Epic says this applies to purchases across Fortnite and other Epic products, but excludes payments on the named platforms and in-game currency such as V-Bucks. Treat it as Epic’s stated rule for that account and payment route—not a general Fortnite spending limit.

Epic’s Time Limit Controls can set daily limits and time windows for Fortnite and UEFN, and can separate Play Time from Create Time when that option is enabled. They work across devices when the child uses the same Epic account. Console and device-level time limits are separate and can impose additional restrictions; neither kind of time control replaces purchase settings.
