To join the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered, learn about the Gray Fox, then meet Armand Christophe at the Garden of Dareloth in the Imperial City Waterfront around midnight. Complete the theft test, “May the Best Thief Win,” and sell stolen goods to fences to unlock later jobs. The questline culminates in “The Ultimate Heist,” the Gray Fox’s succession story, and the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal.
How to Find the Thieves Guild
There are several ways to discover the guild. A straightforward route is to inspect a wanted poster in the Imperial City, then ask a beggar about the Gray Fox. Beggars act as the guild’s information network; if the conversation does not advance, raise the beggar’s disposition through persuasion or a bribe.
You can also ask City-Swimmer in Bravil about the guild. This route may fail to update the quest log, so try the poster-and-beggar route if the next objective does not appear. Getting arrested is another reported way to learn of the guild, but it is not necessary.
| Discovery route | What to do | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Wanted poster and beggar | Inspect a poster in the Imperial City and ask a beggar about the Gray Fox. | Raise disposition if needed to get the information. |
| City-Swimmer | Ask City-Swimmer in Bravil about the guild. | The quest log may not update; use another route if you get stuck. |
| Arrest | Allow yourself to be arrested. | This is an alternative discovery route, not a requirement. |
How to Join the Thieves Guild
- Follow a discovery lead until you learn about the meeting place: the Garden of Dareloth in the Imperial City Waterfront.
- Go to the Garden around midnight. The location is unmarked, so look in the Waterfront District.
- Speak with Armand Christophe when the recruits are present. Armand, Amusei, and Methredhel need to be there for the next stage to trigger.
- Accept “May the Best Thief Win,” steal the assigned diary, and return it to complete the initiation test.
The goal is to finish the assigned theft and return the diary. Avoid turning the test into an unrelated crime spree.

Guild Rules and What Happens if You Break Them
The guild’s rules are simple: do not steal from guild members, do not kill people while on a job, and do not steal from the poor, including beggars and Waterfront residents. Violating a rule can require paying a blood price to be reinstated. The cited guide reports that permanent expulsion is not possible, and that Armand Christophe or S’Krivva can handle reinstatement depending on your progress.
Keep those restrictions in mind while gathering stolen goods to fence. If you are unsure whether a target falls under a rule, leave them alone and steal elsewhere.
Fencing Goods and Unlocking More Quests
Guild advancement depends on the cumulative value of stolen goods you sell to fences, not merely the value of goods in your inventory. Stolen items are marked with red names and a hand icon. Sell them through a fence to advance the ongoing “Independent Thievery” tally.
| Fenced gold threshold | Progression note |
|---|---|
| 50 gold | Early follow-up quest threshold reported by Gamer Guides. |
| 100 gold | Early follow-up quest threshold reported by Gamer Guides. |
| 200 gold | Early follow-up quest threshold reported by Gamer Guides. |

| 400 gold | Early follow-up quest threshold reported by Gamer Guides. |
| 500 gold | Early follow-up quest threshold reported by Gamer Guides. |
| 1,000 gold total | Cumulative amount Gamer Guides reports as necessary to unlock all guild quests. |
These are fencing thresholds reported by Gamer Guides; sell stolen goods to a fence and check your quest objectives as you progress. Do not steal from guild members or poor Waterfront residents while building your stock.
Thieves Guild Quest Order
The broad quest sequence is:
- “May the Best Thief Win”
- “Untaxing the Poor”
- “The Elven Maiden”
- “Ahdarji’s Heirloom”
- “Misdirection”
- “Lost Histories”
- “Taking Care of Lex”
- “Turning a Blind Eye”
- “Arrow of Extrication”
- “Boots of Springheel Jak”
- “The Ultimate Heist”
Some later missions require both quest progress and enough gold fenced. If the next job is unavailable, sell more stolen goods to a fence and consult your journal for the current objective.
The Gray Fox Arc and Final Heist
The later guild missions build toward the Gray Fox’s plan. The arc includes the search for Savilla’s Stone, “Arrow of Extrication,” “Boots of Springheel Jak,” and the Elder Scroll heist. Follow each quest’s journal objective rather than relying on a generic stealth route: the research does not establish a single optimal build or a platform-specific bug fix.
Rank #3
“The Ultimate Heist” concludes with the handoff involving Countess Umbranox. Completing the succession story makes you the guild’s leader and awards the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal. GameSpot also describes access to a guild hall in the Imperial City as part of the outcome.
Practical Tips for the Questline
- Save in multiple files, especially before entering a new area or attempting a quest objective. Bethesda Support recommends frequent saves.
- Keep an eye on your carrying capacity: being over-encumbered prevents fast travel, according to Bethesda Support.
- If a quest target for Clairvoyance appears to point backward, Bethesda Support notes that the target may be at the quest’s last location.
- Talk to people and explore rather than rushing between objectives. Bethesda developer advice emphasizes taking your time and speaking with NPCs.
