David Jaffe’s reply, “This is an XBOX,” drew criticism after it appeared beneath a social-media post mourning a father and recalling the Xbox he had given his child. Insider Gaming’s November 6, 2025 account connects Jaffe’s phrase to Microsoft’s then-recent Xbox marketing campaign, but does not establish what he intended or how the original poster received it.
What happened in the exchange?
Insider Gaming reported that a social-media user shared a picture of two Xbox controllers placed on their father’s grave. The user described the controllers as a way for their father to “play along from up there,” recalling that he had bought them their first Xbox.
David Jaffe, whom Insider Gaming identifies as the creator of God of War and Twisted Metal, quoted the post with the words “This is an XBOX.” The outlet connected the phrase to Microsoft’s then-recent marketing campaign.
Why did the reply draw criticism?
The criticism described by Insider Gaming focused on the joke’s placement beneath a memorial post and the timing of the remark. In that context, commenters interpreted the short Xbox reference as insensitive toward someone mourning a parent. The report also notes that some commenters thought Jaffe might have meant something different; it does not quantify the reaction or establish a consensus.

The disagreement turns on the contrast between the apparent Xbox-marketing reference and the personal memorial it appeared under. Recognizing the reference does not settle how it came across in that setting.
How did Jaffe respond?
Insider Gaming reported that Jaffe answered critics by invoking his own parents’ deaths and his family’s experience of laughing while grieving his father, who died on Halloween. The outlet says his response further stoked criticism. Its transcription censors profanity; the relevant excerpt reads: “My parents are dead as well, it sucks. And even WHEN they died- my dad died on Halloween and you can BET we laughed about it”.

The available account does not establish Jaffe’s intent. It reports the quoted phrase and the exchange around it, while recording different interpretations from commenters. The phrase’s connection to an Xbox campaign may explain the reference, but the report does not prove whether Jaffe meant to mock the deceased, the post, or something else.
