Three fans remade the first A Minecraft Movie trailer as an animation, bringing the game’s block-based visual style to a story the official film presented with live-action performers and computer-generated imagery. The recreation drew enthusiastic comments from some viewers, but online reactions are not a poll—and “better” is a matter of taste.
What the animated Minecraft trailer is
The video is a fan-made animated recreation of the first trailer for A Minecraft Movie, credited to Alumio, Maraylin, and Comic Cyrus. Know Your Meme records it as created on September 8, 2024, shortly after the official trailer appeared. The archive reproduces a creator description saying, “We didn’t really like how the official movie looked so we remade it.” That is description text preserved by the archive, not a separately verified interview.

GameSpot reported on September 9, 2024, that the three fans had released the remake. The available reporting does not establish what software they used or how they divided the work. GameSpot’s report and Know Your Meme’s archived video record document the video and its credits.
Why some viewers preferred the animated look
The recreation puts Minecraft’s recognizable block-shaped world and animated imagery at the center. The official trailer, by contrast, introduced a live-action adaptation with human performers alongside computer-generated elements. For viewers who wanted a film to look more like the game, that difference offered an immediate point of comparison: the fan video leaned into a visibly Minecraft-like world rather than adapting the setting around live-action actors.

Comments in an r/Minecraft discussion included “This is WAY BETTER” and “The Minecraft movie trailer but ACTUALLY better.” Those phrases capture individual reactions, not a representative measure of what Minecraft fans think. The same discussion also included disagreement about whether the animated style would work for an entire feature.
How the fan remake differs from the official film
| Comparison | Fan recreation | Official film |
|---|---|---|
| Visual approach | Animated recreation using a block-based Minecraft look. | Live-action adaptation with performers and computer-generated elements. |
| Creator and format | Fan video credited to Alumio, Maraylin, and Comic Cyrus. | Feature film directed by Jared Hess, starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, with Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge also in the cast. |
| Story context | A recreation of the first film trailer. | Four people are transported to the Overworld, where they must learn to survive and undertake a quest with Steve. |
| Release | Recorded as created September 8, 2024. | The official film site lists a North American theatrical release of April 4, 2025, with international release beginning April 2, 2025. |
The fan video is not an official alternate trailer, and its existence does not show that Minecraft fans as a group prefer animation. It is a separate creative response to the film’s visual approach, while the official movie has its own production, cast, and story.

What the early engagement numbers do—and don’t—show
A MovieWeb report surfaced in IMDb’s news listing on September 14, 2024, said the fan recreation had passed 1.6 million views and received 70,000 likes in less than a day. The same report said the official trailer had passed one million YouTube dislikes. These are historical figures attributed to MovieWeb in 2024, not current counts or independently verified analytics; they also do not establish what viewers thought of either trailer overall. The IMDb listing surfaces the report.
The numbers help explain why the remake became a talking point, but they cannot settle which visual style works better. The available sources also do not provide a named-person quote or a published audience study that would support a claim of broad consensus.
