A “Too hard” message is a clue to a buried deposit, not confirmation—obsidian can produce the same message. Bring an Iron Pickaxe or better to mine any silver you uncover.
What you need before searching
- A two-handed hammer: Stagbreaker or the Iron Sledge can be used to test the ground for buried silver. The hammer is for prospecting, not mining the vein. Valheim Wiki: Silver vein
- An Iron Pickaxe or better: You need a pickaxe at this tier or higher to mine silver. Valheim Wiki: Silver vein
- Cold protection: The Mountain’s Freezing effect makes preparation essential. Frost Resistance Mead, frost-resistant equipment, and campfires are among the options described in the Mountain biome reference.
- Supplies for hostile encounters: Prospecting takes place in the Mountains, so plan for threats as well as cold.
How to prospect with a hammer
- Travel to a Mountain biome. Silver veins are found there and are often buried. Game-reference pages describe a 120-meter elevation threshold for silver generation; treat that as reference-derived detail, not an official developer statement. Valheim Wiki: Silver vein Valheim Wiki: Silver
- Equip Stagbreaker or the Iron Sledge and strike the ground as you search.
- Watch for the “Too hard” message. Use it to identify a place worth checking, then investigate rather than assuming you have found silver.
- Check whether nearby obsidian could explain the message. Obsidian can trigger the same clue, so dig carefully to verify what is underground before spending time excavating.
- When you expose a silver vein, switch to an Iron Pickaxe or better to mine it. Valheim Wiki: Silver vein
Hammer prospecting versus the Wishbone
| Method | Progression | What the clue tells you | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wishbone | Normally obtained after defeating Bonemass. | Detects buried silver without relying on the hammer’s ambiguous “Too hard” message. | It requires the Bonemass reward, but searching is more straightforward. |
| Two-handed hammer | Can be used before obtaining the Wishbone, if you have a suitable hammer. | “Too hard” can point to silver, but obsidian can produce the same message. | Repeated ground tests and verification take more effort; the message alone does not confirm a vein. |
The Wishbone and hammer methods are described in the silver-vein reference.
What to expect from the search
Not every deposit is buried, but surface-exposed silver is described as rare. Silver ore also cannot pass through ordinary portals, so account for transporting it when deciding how much to collect. The reference does not establish a more specific hauling method. Valheim Wiki: Silver
The no-Wishbone hammer approach is a community-reference method rather than a directly documented official instruction. Treat the ground message as a lead and verify the material before committing to a large excavation.
