The best maritime horror games make the sea more than a backdrop: it limits where you can go, what you can see, and how safely you can survive. This curated list spans an oil rig, a passenger ship, a submarine, a ghost ship, and open-water fishing. It is not an objective ranking; the picks are compared by how strongly water shapes play, how consistently they sustain their atmosphere, their kind of fear, and the sort of player likely to enjoy them.
What counts as maritime horror?
A horror game does not need to take place aboard a conventional ship to qualify. An oil rig, submarine, underwater facility, or fishing boat can all create maritime dread when the water materially affects movement, visibility, navigation, resources, or tactics. The ocean’s scale and isolation can make familiar survival problems feel especially exposed: help is distant, routes are constrained, and the threat may be difficult to understand.

The 10 best maritime horror games
1. Still Wakes the Deep
Best for: cinematic, storm-battered oil-rig horror.

#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Set in 1975 on the Beira D oil rig off Scotland, Still Wakes the Deep traps an offshore worker amid a storm, freezing North Sea waters, and an otherworldly threat. The sea and the rig reinforce one another: the platform is an isolated workplace surrounded by dangerous water, not a safe refuge from it. Steam lists June 18, 2024 as the release date and says the game won three BAFTA Games Awards: Best New IP, Performer in a Leading Role, and Performer in a Supporting Role. See the official Steam listing.
Choose it for atmospheric consistency and a focused, story-led scare rather than open-water exploration. Steam describes the protagonist as “fighting for his life through a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters.”
2. SENARA: The Sacrament
Best for: survival horror aboard a doomed passenger ship.
SENARA: The Sacrament is described as a first-person survival-horror game aboard the mysterious 6,000-ton passenger ship SENARA as it nears sinking. Its announced loop includes exploring the vessel, solving puzzles, collecting clues, and trying to survive; the announcement also mentions multiple endings. Those elements make it a natural fit for players who want shipboard exploration and narrative uncertainty rather than open-water navigation. Read the Steam Community announcement.
The announcement gives a July 30 launch date but does not state the year in the visible text. Check the current official store listing for release status and platform support before treating it as available to play.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
3. Iron Lung
Best for: pure underwater dread and submarine claustrophobia.
Iron Lung takes its premise to an ocean of blood on a desolate moon, placing the player inside a small, rusty submarine. The confined vehicle turns navigation into a source of anxiety: the surrounding water is not an inviting space to explore, but a dark unknown pressing against a fragile boundary. Its distinct appeal is the contrast between an enormous, hostile ocean and the tight limits of the vessel.
Pick it if you want a compact-feeling, confinement-driven horror premise rather than a broad shipboard drama. Check the official store for the platform and edition you intend to use.
4. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
Best for: branching ghost-ship drama and choice-driven survival horror.
Set in the South Pacific, Man of Medan follows a diving trip that leads into a ghost-ship story. Its five playable protagonists and choice-driven outcomes make it the most ensemble-oriented pick here: the tension comes not just from the maritime setting, but from decisions that can change the story and who survives. It is a good fit for players who want a narrative horror experience to discuss or replay for different outcomes.

- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.

5. Dredge
Best for: unsettling fishing and exploration with supernatural threats.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Dredge uses fishing as its central activity, then makes the sea’s dangers part of the routine. Its world spans five archipelagos, with supernatural events and sea monsters particularly associated with night-time. That contrast gives it a different rhythm from a conventional survival-horror game: exploration and fishing sit alongside the unease of deciding how far to travel and when to return.
Choose it if you want maritime horror threaded through an exploration-and-fishing loop, rather than continuous shipboard pursuit. The cited reference also describes Lovecraftian creatures. Check the publisher’s Dredge page for official information.
6. Sunless Sea
Best for: narrative-heavy nautical roguelike play.
Sunless Sea brings danger to a narrative-led roguelike structure built around nautical exploration. Its appeal is the combination of voyaging and uncertainty: the sea is a setting to navigate, while the story and risks of a run shape what each journey means. It suits players who want a slower, text-rich experience and are comfortable with a game organized around repeated expeditions rather than a single linear horror story.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. SOMA
Best for: psychological horror and an existential spiral.
SOMA is an adjacent underwater-horror recommendation for players drawn to psychological uncertainty and questions about identity, rather than a conventional ship disaster. It is often suggested alongside maritime horror for its underwater setting and existential tone, but the specific game details and current platform availability are not established here. Check the official store for a current description before choosing it.
8. Subnautica
Best for: underwater exploration that can become frightening through isolation and the unknown.
Subnautica is a broader underwater experience rather than a straightforward horror title. It belongs on a wider maritime-horror shortlist for readers seeking underwater dread, but its exact premise and present-day platform support should be checked on its official store page before purchase.

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
9. The Unfathomable board game (not a video game)
Best for: tabletop fans seeking sea-monster paranoia with a group.
Unfathomable is a tabletop companion rather than a video game: the cited description centers on maintaining a steamship crossing the Atlantic while monsters attack and traitors may be aboard. It offers social deduction and group suspicion instead of a digital exploration or survival loop. It is included as a neighboring recommendation, not as one of the video games in this list.
10. A wider field of maritime horror
Maritime horror also includes games set on underwater facilities and other isolated sea-bound locations, but a useful recommendation needs more than a watery backdrop. For this list, the ocean must shape the fear or play in a meaningful way. If you are choosing beyond the named examples, look for official descriptions that make clear how water affects visibility, navigation, isolation, or survival—and verify the game’s current platform support before buying.

The best fit depends on whether you want the ocean to feel like a prison, a route, or a world to explore.
