How abilities work in Avowed
Obsidian describes four expansive skill trees: Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Godlike. The trees offer different routes for developing a character rather than locking you into a single class. The official overview encourages mixing abilities and weapons, so a character’s approach can combine skills with melee weapons, ranged weapons, and grimoires.
Obsidian’s launch overview names two abilities as examples: Grimoire Snap, which unleashes shockwaves, and Blood Magic, which trades health for power. How to combine abilities, weapons, and grimoires
Xbox Wire describes two weapon loadouts, letting players prepare different equipment combinations. Its examples include dual pistols with a longbow, or an axe with a grimoire. These illustrate the system’s flexibility; they are examples, not tested build recommendations.
When choosing a setup, consider the range and equipment mix you want—close melee, ranged weapons, or grimoires—and which abilities you want to use alongside them. If your plan relies on Godlike abilities, also account for how those abilities are earned through progression. Official descriptions support these as useful comparison points, but do not rank combinations by effectiveness.

What changed in the February 2026 update
Obsidian’s February 17, 2026 anniversary update added New Game Plus, available after completing the main story. It carries over unlocked abilities with one stated exception: Godlike abilities, which come from story progression or world exploration. The update also raises the attribute stat cap in New Game Plus.

The same update adds the quarterstaff as a weapon type. Obsidian describes it as a bludgeoning weapon with wand-style stun finishers; it is a weapon addition, not a fifth ability tree. The update announcement is available from Obsidian.
