To unlock Act 3, meet the prerequisites for the Silk and Soul Wish, gather its four Soul Snare components, give them to the Caretaker, then defeat Grand Mother Silk and play the Needolin when prompted instead of binding her.
Act 3 unlock checklist
The most detailed available checklist comes from the community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki. It describes a minimum of 17 Quest Points out of 25 possible, plus specific wishes, items, caravan movement, and a boss encounter. These are guide-reported conditions, not a first-party developer checklist; PC Gamer describes a less exhaustive practical route and says not every wish or flea is necessary.
- Earn at least 17 Quest Points. The wiki reports 25 possible: 22 from normal Wishes and 3 from first-time completion of six delivery Wishes.
- Complete these named wishes: Flexile Spines, A Lifesaving Bridge, Crawbug Clearing, Strengthening Songclave, Trail’s End, and Balm for the Wounded.
- Acquire the Faydown Cloak and Bellhome Key.
- Move the Flea Caravan to its final destination. The wiki calls it Fleatopia; PC Gamer describes Pale Lake in the Putrified Ducts. PC Gamer says to tell Fleamaster Mooshka after finding the location.
- Defeat Lace in the Cradle.
Once these conditions are met, take the Silk and Soul Wish from Bellhart’s Wishwall or speak to the Caretaker in Songclave. See the Hollow Knight Wiki’s Silk and Soul page for its itemized prerequisite account.
Why walkthroughs list different requirements
Some guides present a thorough route, while others try to identify the minimum conditions. Nintendo Life’s completionist route recommends finishing every wish on the Bone Bottom, Bellhart, and Songclave boards, collecting the Threefold Melodies, opening the Cradle, acquiring Bellhome, completing Shakra’s Trail’s End after buying all her maps, exploring Bilewater and the Putrified Ducts, and moving the caravan to Pale Lake. It estimates around 25 fleas and notes that requirements were still debated when it published its guide. That is a broad route, not proof that every listed task is mandatory.

PC Gamer says to complete most relevant town wishes, move the caravan to Pale Lake, and collect the Architect, Conductor, and Vaultkeeper melodies to reach the Cradle. It estimates 22 fleas, possibly plus named additional fleas, but says not every wish, lost flea, town quest, or the final boss must be completed before the Silk and Soul Wish becomes available. The flea figures differ between guides; treat the caravan’s destination and the specific prerequisite list as more useful checkpoints than assuming a universal flea total.
For a low-risk approach, use the wiki’s explicit 17-point threshold and named prerequisites as your checklist, then verify that Silk and Soul is available at the Wishwall or with the Caretaker. Guides do not establish a developer-confirmed checklist that resolves every edge case.

Complete Silk and Soul sequence
- Accept Silk and Soul at Bellhart’s Wishwall or from the Caretaker in Songclave.
- Find the Maiden’s Soul in Bone Bottom.
- Find the Hermit’s Soul in Bellhart.
- Defeat Groal the Great in Bilewater to obtain the Seeker’s Soul.
- Find the Snare Setter in a hidden workshop in Weavenest Atla.
- Bring all four components to the Caretaker in Songclave. The Caretaker builds the Soul Snare.
- Return to the Cradle and fight Grand Mother Silk again. At the final blow, choose the Needolin prompt rather than binding her. This triggers the Snared Silk ending and opens Act 3 progression after the ending sequence.
The four required components are the Maiden’s Soul, Hermit’s Soul, Seeker’s Soul, and Snare Setter. The sequence and component locations are documented in the Hollow Knight Wiki walkthrough and Nintendo Life’s Act 3 guide.

Choosing the Needolin route has permanent consequences for that save profile. The Hollow Knight Wiki says triggering Snared Silk locks out the Weaver Queen and Twisted Child endings; Nintendo Life specifically warns that entering Act 3 without cursing Hornet locks out Twisted Child. If you want to see every ending, finish the ending-specific prerequisites you care about before committing to the Soul Snare route.
