These ten picks cover all of those moods, rather than treating “cozy” as one genre or ranking them from best to worst. Some offer an open-ended routine; others are compact, authored adventures.
Choose by the kind of cozy you want
“Cozy” is personal. Nintendo’s own selections span narrative, farming, mystery, and simulation, while an exploratory University of Skövde study found varied associations including peacefulness, comfort, and emotional connection. A reader who wants a warm atmosphere without making decorating the main activity has plenty of options here: several recommendations center on exploration, puzzles, relationships, or conversation instead.
- For a daily routine: try a farming or community sim.
- For a story in shorter, more defined sessions: look at the narrative-led adventures.
- For a focused task: choose a puzzle or management game.
- For a wintry setting: start with the mouse-sized wilderness of Winter Burrow.

2. Stardew Valley — settle into a deeper farming routine
Grow crops, raise animals, explore, and build relationships in Pelican Town. Its broader mix of farm work, exploration, and social connections makes it a strong choice if you want a routine with several strands of progression rather than one short story. It suits players who enjoy steadily working toward goals; it is less suited to anyone looking for a purely passive, no-task experience.
3. Unpacking — solve a quiet puzzle with a story thread
Place belongings in rooms and gradually piece together the life behind them. The core activity is arranging objects, but the changing spaces give the puzzle a narrative dimension. Pick it for a focused, authored experience rather than a long-running simulation.
4. A Short Hike — explore at your own pace
Climb, hike, and soar around Hawk Peak Provincial Park. It offers a compact exploration adventure rather than a farm or home-building loop, making it a natural choice when you want to wander through a small world and enjoy a change of pace.

6. Coffee Talk — make drinks and hear people out
Prepare coffee while listening to customers talk through their problems in a conversation simulator. The draw is character interaction, not farming or decorating, so it is an especially direct alternative if you want a story-led game built around listening.
7. A Little to the Left — organize, then adapt
Arrange household objects into satisfying patterns while a mischievous cat gets in the way. This is the list’s most overtly tidy-minded puzzle pick: it turns sorting and finding arrangements into the main activity, rather than asking you to manage a larger world.

This list is not Switch-exclusive. Nintendo’s cited cozy-game features concern Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, while broader editorial lists cover PC and other systems; support varies by title. The descriptions above are not a guarantee that a game runs on a particular console, handheld, or PC storefront. Confirm the exact game and edition on the store for your region before purchasing. Editions, updates, and availability can change, so rely on live listings for current details rather than older seasonal announcements.
Why these games count as cozy
There is no single required activity or pace. Nintendo UK’s December 12, 2022 feature described its picks as having “no racing against the clock nor rushing enemies” and called them peaceful, cozy games. That is Nintendo’s editorial description of that selection, not a rule that applies to every game in the wider category. The variety here is the point: comfort may come from routine, exploration, satisfying organization, companionship, or a story.
An exploratory University of Skövde study’s response table recorded Stardew Valley named by 12 participants, Minecraft by 5, Animal Crossing by 5, Spiritfarer by 3, Unpacking by 3, and A Short Hike by 2. These are counts from that study’s participants, not sales figures or representative measures of popularity. The publication year is not established in the cited excerpt.
