Which Steam Next Fest October 2025 demos were worth trying? These ten stand out for distinctive mechanics, memorable presentation, or a compelling change of pace—not because they form an objective ranking. The event ran October 13–20, 2025, and the picks bring together hands-on recommendations from A.V. Club and Cheat Code Central, with audience attention checked against ScreenHub’s most-played list.
How these ten demos stand out
“Coolest” is a matter of taste, so this selection favors variety: unusual control schemes, tactical experimentation, expressive worlds, horror, and strategy. A reviewer’s hands-on impression and an event popularity list answer different questions. Popularity can show that players paid attention during the festival; it cannot establish which game is best or predict its eventual success.

The October 2025 event took place October 13–20. Cheat Code Central’s reviewer said they downloaded more than 40 titles and chose 15 demos for their roundup; that is the reviewer’s own account, not an independently audited event-wide count. ScreenHub published a list of 50 most-played demos, not a count of all demos at the festival.
Ten demos to remember
1. Eclipse Breaker — action with a delayed rhythm
A.V. Club describes combat that blends real-time movement, dodging, and parrying with attacks queued to resolve when an action bar fills. That gives familiar action-roguelike combat an unusual cadence: players have to move and defend in the moment while also thinking about the queued sequence. Its story adds a meta hook: the protagonist’s save file was abandoned for 25 years, and she returns to a world that kept changing while she was gone.

2. Goodnight Universe — a story told through unusual controls
In A.V. Club’s description, Isaac is a hyper-intelligent psychic baby, and the game uses mouse input alongside camera-based eye movement controls. That interaction makes this a particularly distinctive story-led pick. A.V. Club also identifies it as the next game from the creators of Before Your Eyes.
3. Forestrike — rehearse the fight before risking it
A.V. Club characterizes Forestrike as a martial-arts roguelike built around mental rehearsal. Players can test sequences in a no-stakes simulation, then try to execute their solution against enemies with predictable behaviors. The appeal is the tactical puzzle of learning what works and carrying that plan into the real fight—not simply the roguelike label.

4. Skate Story — skating through a surreal underworld
A.V. Club describes a demon skating through the underworld in pursuit of freedom. The play shifts between downhill runs and open skate-park spaces, with tricks and a timing mechanic. Its surreal presentation and soundtrack set it apart from a conventional skateboarding game. One line of on-screen text captured the mood: “The Skateboard vibrated at a divine frequency.”
5. Cairn — climbing as a patient, physical puzzle
Cheat Code Central and A.V. Club both emphasize the granular climbing. Each limb can be aimed and placed independently, so progress depends on choosing holds and managing the body’s position rather than simply following a route. A.V. Club also notes limited pitons, food and water, with fatigue and route planning adding pressure. Among these selections, it is the deliberate, simulation-minded counterpoint to faster action.

6. Wall World 2 — mine, upgrade, and defend
Cheat Code Central describes a loop built around a wall-crawling mech: venture into caves to gather resources, improve the miner, and face tower-defense encounters. That combination gives the demo a clear rhythm of expedition, preparation, and defense. The source’s October 18, 2025 article listed November 11, 2025 as the release date at the time; that event-era listing does not establish the game’s current release status.
7. Ground Zero — retro-styled survival horror with a rough edge
Cheat Code Central describes Ground Zero as science-fiction survival horror with a PS1-era aesthetic and combat influenced by the original Resident Evil trilogy. The reviewer also flagged floaty aiming as a drawback, a useful caveat for players who want to know both the intended appeal and a possible friction point. The source did not give a firm release date.

8. Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era — turn-based fantasy strategy
Cheat Code Central calls this a prequel centered on turn-based tactics and strategy and names its demo as a personal highlight. Separately, ScreenHub included it among the 50 most-played demos from the October event. That list provides evidence of audience attention during the festival, not a verdict on quality or future success.
9. Reanimal — atmospheric horror with puzzles and platforming
Cheat Code Central describes Reanimal as a horror adventure combining platforming and puzzle design, and compares its feel to Little Nightmares, Inside, and Limbo. ScreenHub also placed it in the event’s most-played 50. The comparison is one reviewer’s design impression; the list is a separate signal of how much attention the demo drew.

10. Menace — demanding, system-heavy military tactics
Cheat Code Central describes Overhype Studios’ Menace as a turn-based military tactics simulation, drawing comparisons to XCOM and Command & Conquer. Its reviewer found the demo limited and potentially tough, while noting that the interlocking systems reward continued play. ScreenHub also included it among the 50 most-played October demos.

What to know about these October 2025 recommendations
These ten are an editorial synthesis of the cited event-era roundups, not a top ten published by one source. A.V. Club and Cheat Code Central reported on demos they tried; ScreenHub’s list supplies a separate popularity signal for Olden Era, Reanimal, and Menace. None of those observations makes the list a definitive quality ranking.
The detailed descriptions above come from October 2025 coverage. The cited sources do not establish which demos remain downloadable, their current platform availability, or their final release status as of October 7, 2026. Check each game’s current official listing before planning to play. For other possibilities, Jetson Plays Games’ roundup also covered titles including MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, Hell Maiden, Dead Format, and Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis.
