When starting S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, prepare for more than firefights: bleeding, radiation, hunger, gear condition, and sudden Emissions can all turn a routine trip into a problem. These ten beginner mistakes are based primarily on an Epic Games Store guide published November 20, 2024, so treat patch-sensitive details as guidance from that version rather than a guarantee for every current build. The official site describes the game as a survival-oriented first-person shooter, immersive sim, and horror experience in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 site; Epic Games Store guide).
1. Don’t leave without supplies for the hazards you may face
Different consumables address different problems. The Epic guide says bandages restore a small amount of health and stop bleeding, while medkits restore more health but do not stop bleeding. Bread and sausages restore health and reduce hunger; water slightly reduces hunger and restores stamina. Carrying only medkits can leave you bleeding, and carrying only healing items may not help when hunger or stamina becomes the immediate constraint.

Before leaving a settlement, check your supplies against the trip: something to stop bleeding, something for substantial health loss, food and water, and anti-radiation drugs if you expect irradiated areas. These are in-game items, not real-world survival advice.
2. Don’t ignore radiation cues
In the 2024 guide, radiation around hazardous areas is accompanied by an audible crackle or pop; exposure can also occur around water or during rain. Radiation buildup can damage health at critical levels. Anti-Radiation Drugs reduce the gauge, but use them while moving out of danger rather than treating them as permission to stay exposed. If you hear or see a warning cue, change course and get clear.

3. Don’t linger when an Emission approaches
An approaching Emission is an urgent shelter problem, not an encounter to finish at leisure. The guide names thunder, a blood-red sky, and NPC radio warnings as signals. When danger is close, a shelter appears as an objective: follow it, get inside, and wait until the event ends. Continuing to explore after the warning risks leaving yourself too little time to reach safety.
4. Don’t bypass settlement services
Settlements are preparation hubs, not just places to pass through. The guide describes several useful services:
- Guides: For a fee, they can take you to other guides you have already met.
- Vendors: Sell supplies and equipment.
- Medics: Heal you and sell curatives.
- Technicians: Repair and upgrade gear.
Use these services before a risky outing: replenish what you have spent, address injuries, and check whether worn equipment needs attention.

- Battle against over 50 players simultaneously in a massive multiplayer playground—over 20 players on Xbox One.
- Compete in an all-out mass start race—collide, grind, and fight your way to the finish
- Customize your character to show off your style to your friends or show up the competition.
- Bike, ski, snowboard, or wingsuit through a seamless open world in Career mode or multiplayer events.
- Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.
5. Don’t leave useful weapon attachments unused
Attachments can change what a weapon is good at. The Epic guide points to silencers, extended magazines, scopes, and underbarrel grenade launchers. Check what you have and whether it suits the way you expect to fight; a weapon’s value is not only its name or damage.
Technician upgrades may also improve handling, accuracy, carry weight, or range, and can add attachment slots. Compare the benefit with the cost and your current equipment rather than assuming every upgrade is equally useful.
6. Don’t use one tactic against every mutant
Mutants can demand different positioning or responses. The 2024 guide offers these examples:

- Fully customizable back triggers that allow the user to program the PS4 Controller and map any of the input Buttons to the two extra triggers
- Enjoy over 100 games right out of the box with a 1 month Xbox Game Pass trial

- Bloodsucker: Keep a wall behind you to limit the directions it can approach from.
- Psy Dog: Identify the real one rather than wasting attacks on its copies.
- Chimera: Seek high ground.
- Burer: If it interferes with your primary weapon, switch to a pistol.
These are encounter-specific suggestions, not a universal formula. Pay attention to what an enemy is doing and change position or weapon when your current approach is failing.
7. Don’t pass a stash without checking it
Stashes can reward a detour. The guide specifically notes that Journalist Stashes from “Seek and You Shall Find” can contain weapons and armor with preset modifications. Check stashes you encounter, then judge any find against your current gear: function, condition, repair cost, and weight all matter.

Skif’s default carrying capacity is given as 80 kilograms in the Epic Games Store guide published November 20, 2024; that figure was not independently verified against the current game version. The guide says movement and stamina replenishment worsen as you approach the limit, so spare capacity has practical value.
Be selective about loot. Compare an item’s usefulness and condition with its weight and likely repair cost. Heavily damaged items may cost more to repair than they are worth when sold, and carrying them can also make travel less manageable. Store excess equipment instead of treating every weapon as a worthwhile pickup.
9. Don’t treat every artifact as a pure upgrade
The Echo Detector is described in the guide as the early default device: light and blinking indicate that you are near an artifact. Finding one is only the first decision. Artifacts can bring both benefits and harmful effects, so read the trade-off before equipping one.
For example, the guide describes the Hypercube as providing strong bleeding resistance and thermal protection while also causing maximum radiation buildup. That combination may suit a particular need, but it is not an uncomplicated upgrade. Weigh an artifact’s protection against its drawbacks and your ability to manage them.

Dialogue and mission decisions can affect faction standing and may lead to hostile encounters, according to the Epic guide. It also says speaking with a faction leader can restore neutrality. The guide does not establish the outcomes of individual spoiler-sensitive choices, so there is no reliable basis here for naming specific dialogue options as universally safe or unsafe.
