These picks are grouped by that kind of appeal: some are closer mechanically, while others match the series through co-op or progression instead.

For the closest return to Gears: Gears of War: Reloaded
1. Gears of War: Reloaded
If what you want is more Gears rather than a substitute, Gears of War: Reloaded is the clearest fit: PlayStation describes it as the original third-person cover shooter. Its PS5 listing specifies solo play, split-screen co-op, and online co-op for the story campaign. Check the store listing for your region for current availability and edition details. PlayStation’s Gears of War: Reloaded page.
For third-person cover-oriented action
2. Uncharted
Uncharted is worth considering if the appeal you want to retain is third-person action built around taking cover and moving through combat encounters. It is a series, not a single game, so choose a specific entry that is available on your platform rather than assuming every installment has the same features. This is a cover-action comparison, not a claim that its combat is identical to Gears. The recommendation surfaced in reader search results.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
3. Army of Two
Choose Army of Two if you want a cover-action option with a stronger co-op lean. The recommendation is most relevant to players looking for a partner-oriented alternative; verify the specific edition, platform, and co-op support before purchase. Its fit is co-op-oriented cover action, not a guarantee of a Gears-style campaign on every version. The recommendation surfaced in reader search results.
For a more story-led action game
4. The Last of Us Part I
The Last of Us Part I is a better match for players who want an emotionally focused action story than for anyone seeking a one-to-one Gears combat replacement. Consider it when narrative and character-driven stakes matter more than matching the exact pace or structure of Gears firefights. Confirm the edition and supported platform on the relevant store listing. The recommendation surfaced in reader search results.

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
For squad tactics and role-playing progression
5. Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Mass Effect Legendary Edition suits players who want a team-focused science-fiction story, squad decisions, and role-playing progression. That makes it a thematic and systems-based alternative, not a direct cover-shooter match. Check the listing for the platform you use and whether its features fit your expectations. The recommendation surfaced in reader search results.
6. OUTRIDERS
OUTRIDERS is a candidate for players who prioritize a cooperative story shooter and RPG-style builds. Its appeal overlaps with Gears through co-op and progression rather than simply through third-person cover combat. Verify current availability and the co-op options for your platform before deciding. The recommendation surfaced in reader search results.

How to choose the right Gears-like game
| If you want… | Start with… | What carries over |
|---|---|---|
| The original Gears campaign again | Gears of War: Reloaded | Gears setting and cover-shooter identity; solo and co-op story play on the PS5 listing |
| Third-person cover-oriented action | Uncharted | Cover-action emphasis; verify the entry and platform |
| A co-op-leaning cover-action option | Army of Two | Partner-oriented co-op appeal; verify edition and platform |
| Action driven more by story | The Last of Us Part I | Narrative focus, rather than a claimed exact combat match |
| Squad play and role-playing | Mass Effect Legendary Edition | Team-focused science fiction and progression |
| Co-op plus RPG builds | OUTRIDERS | Cooperative story-shooter and progression appeal |
Co-op is not one feature: campaign split-screen, online campaign play, and competitive or wave-based multiplayer are different modes, and a game may support some but not others. Before buying an outside-series pick, check its official store page for the exact platform, edition, campaign mode, and local or online player support you need.

Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day as released on October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Steam, and as available through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Its official listing describes a solo campaign, two-player split-screen on console, or online campaign co-op for up to four players. Xbox says online campaign co-op, Horde Siege, Versus, and other multiplayer features require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer; console split-screen is two players. Rank #4
- 25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy
- Never Fight Alone: Enjoy two-player co-op with friends locally via split-screen, over Xbox Live or LAN. Player 2 can select either Kait or Del
- Redefined Cover Gameplay: New close-cover combat moves and combat-knife executions turn each piece of cover into an offensive opportunity
- Brutal New Weapons: An incredible arsenal of new weapons includes the Buzzkill and Dropshot, which can shoot around and over cover, raining destruction from all angles
Xbox calls the game a “3rd Person Cover-Shooter” and says, “Iconic cover based combat returns, enhanced with modernized movement and traversal that add freedom and verticality.” Those publisher descriptions capture why cover combat is a useful comparison axis, but they do not make every game above a direct mechanical equivalent.
