Final Fantasy VII Remake uses a similar hybrid approach. These are not fully turn-based battles; they combine direct action with menu-based commands. If you mean a brisk but genuinely turn-based rhythm, that is a different quality—and the available evidence here does not support a verified list of ten games.
What “turn-based combat that feels real time” can mean
The phrase describes several different combat rhythms, not one genre. A game may let you move and attack continuously, then slow or pause the action for commands. Another may use an active-time gauge that determines when a character can act. A fully turn-based game can also feel brisk because turns resolve quickly, even though the world does not keep moving while you choose.
- True hybrid: direct action continues outside command selection, with menus slowing or pausing the fight.
- Active-time command system: a gauge fills over time and enables actions, but the degree of continuous player control varies.
- Fast-paced turn-based: combat remains turn-based, but frequent choices or short waits keep it moving. That is not the same as real-time pressure.
Those distinctions matter when choosing a game: ask whether the action continues during decisions, whether actions depend on a filling gauge, and how much direct control you want between commands.
Games with documented real-time-style combat
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the clearest documented match for a real-time-and-command hybrid. Square Enix says normal attacks fill the ATB gauge used for abilities and spells; opening Tactical Mode “slows down the passage of time” while you select commands. The result is a fight where you control action directly, build resources through attacks, and take more time to choose a special move when needed. Square Enix’s official battle overview describes the system.

- Play Campaigns or Skirmish single-player
The game also offers Classic mode, which automates basic actions so you can focus on selecting commands. That changes how much direct action the player handles; it does not make the combat system conventional turn-based combat.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Final Fantasy VII Remake offers a related hybrid structure. In a June 12, 2019 hands-on report, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Justin Massongill described standard attacks filling ATB faster and Tactical Mode slowing time nearly to a stop while opening a menu for abilities, spells, and items. He also described switching characters to build gauges and use each member’s abilities. This is a named author’s account of his hands-on session, not a general independent test. Why a brisk turn-based battle is not necessarily real time
Turn-based play can offer deliberate, unrushed decision-making, but that does not automatically create momentum. A 2020 peer-reviewed study of player preferences for real-time and turn-based combat reports that some players valued having time to think, while others criticized waiting and slow battles. Its findings are qualitative in the passages available here; they do not establish a universal preference or a numerical share of players who favor either style. The study also notes that posters generally did not explain why they liked particular games, limiting what can be concluded about specific mechanics. Read the CHI PLAY 2020 paper.
How Persona 5 Tactica fits—and what remains unclear
Atlus describes Persona 5 Tactica as a turn-based game and lists physical and digital editions. That supports calling it turn-based, but the official page does not establish whether its battle rhythm feels real time, whether action continues during command selection, or whether a gauge gates actions. It is therefore a useful turn-based comparison, not a verified recommendation for the real-time-feeling criterion. See Atlus’s official Persona 5 Tactica page.

- A wide array of game modes
- Juggle military, economic and scientific development
- Multiple large battlefield maps, giving you the best strategy games
Choosing the right kind of pace
- Choose a documented hybrid such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth if you want continuous attacks alongside time-slowing command selection.
- Consider Final Fantasy VII Remake for a similar action-and-command mix, keeping in mind that the cited combat description is a 2019 hands-on account.
- Look for a verified mechanics description before treating a fully turn-based title as “real time.” Turn order, tactical depth, or cinematic animations alone do not establish that the action keeps moving while you decide.
Only these two hybrid examples have sufficiently documented mechanics here; the available official description of Persona 5 Tactica does not verify the pacing claim. A ten-game list would imply evidence for additional titles that is not established.
