There is no single kit every gamer needs. A console player, a PC player who prefers a controller, and a competitive mouse-and-keyboard player will need different gear. Start with the platform and games you actually use, then choose the essentials that improve input, viewing, audio, or comfort without buying duplicates.
Which gaming essentials matter most?
For most setups, the practical core is a compatible gaming platform, a suitable display, the input devices you prefer, and a way to hear game audio and communicate. A mouse pad matters if you use a mouse; a desk and chair matter if you play at a desk. Extra accessories are optional and should solve a real need.
HP identifies a gaming keyboard, gaming mouse, gaming headset, and mouse pad as common core accessories, while Dell describes keyboard and mouse or a controller as possible setup inputs. These are categories, not a universal requirement to own every item. HP’s gaming accessories guide and Dell’s gaming setup overview offer starting points.
1. A gaming platform that suits the games you play
Your PC or console is the foundation, but this is not a reason to replace equipment that already runs the games you want to play. Consider the games, performance needs, friends’ platforms, and the space you have before making a platform decision. Check compatibility for any accessory you add; a connector that fits does not by itself establish that every feature will work.

2. A display matched to your platform
A screen is part of a desk-based setup, but the right resolution and refresh rate depend on your hardware, games, and preferences. A high-refresh-rate monitor can be relevant to some players, but it is not a universal requirement. Check the display outputs and supported modes of your PC or console, and prioritize the qualities you will notice in the games you play rather than buying a specification for its own sake. HP includes a high-refresh-rate monitor among possible setup components; Dell’s setup guide also treats equipment as setup-dependent.
3. A keyboard, if keyboard input is right for you
A keyboard is essential for PC players who choose keyboard input, but not for every gamer. HP discusses both mechanical and membrane keyboards: compare their feel, layout, sound, and price against your own preferences. No one keyboard type is the right choice for everyone. Before buying, check connection type, operating-system support, and any platform-specific compatibility requirements.

4. A mouse for mouse-and-keyboard play
A gaming mouse gives you cursor control and is useful for PC games played with a mouse. Consider shape and size, button layout, connection, and whether the mouse works with your platform and preferred games. If you primarily play with a controller, a gaming mouse may be unnecessary.
5. A controller when the game or platform calls for one
Controllers are common on consoles and can also suit PC games or players who prefer that input. They are an alternative or complement to a keyboard and mouse, not something every player must own alongside them. Confirm support for your platform and connection method before choosing a controller; compatibility depends on the specific device and game.

6. A headset or speakers for game audio
Choose a headset when you want private listening or need to communicate with teammates; speakers may be a better fit for solo play or a shared room. Headsets may include a microphone, so check whether one meets your communication needs before buying a separate mic.
Wired or wireless?
HP outlines tradeoffs between wired and wireless headsets. Compare cable convenience against wireless battery and connection considerations, and verify current platform support and product-specific performance before buying. Do not assume that every wireless headset works with every console or PC.

7. A separate microphone, only if you need one
A dedicated microphone is optional. Consider one if you stream, record, or regularly communicate and the microphone in your headset does not meet your needs. For ordinary team chat, a suitable headset microphone may be enough; avoid adding another device unless it solves a specific audio problem.

A mouse pad provides a consistent surface for mouse movement. Its value depends on your desk surface and how you use the mouse. If you play with a controller and do not use a mouse, you can skip it.

9. A desk and chair that fit your space
A stable, appropriately sized desk and a chair you can adjust to your body and room can make a desk setup easier to use. Focus on fit and positioning rather than a gaming label: leave room for your legs, place controls within comfortable reach, and position the display so you can view it without awkward posture. Microsoft’s gaming setup guidance discusses chair and desk positioning and monitor distance. Cleveland Clinic’s gaming ergonomics guide depicts workstation components. These are setup considerations, not proof that a particular product prevents pain or injury.
10. An optional stand or monitor arm
A monitor stand or arm can help when you need to change screen height or reclaim desk space. It is not a required gaming accessory: consider one only if the display’s current position is awkward or the desk needs the room. Check that a mount supports the display and desk before purchasing. Intel’s gaming setup guide and Herman Miller’s gaming setup overview discuss setup comfort, space, and positioning.
Quick Recap
How to choose without overbuying
- Start with platform: Verify that an accessory supports your PC or console and the connection you plan to use.
- Match input to the game: Keyboard and mouse or controller may suit different games and preferences; you do not need both by default.
- Buy for a specific gap: If your current screen, headset, or seating works for your needs, upgrading is optional.
- Account for your room: Desk surface, legroom, screen placement, and peripheral reach can matter more than a gaming-branded finish.
- Set a budget by priority: Spend first on the category that addresses an actual limitation in your setup, not on accessories simply because they appear on a checklist.
