Defeating him is associated with the Murakumo drop and unlocks the Alva Set, which you can collect inside the dungeon near Karla’s cell. A separate Alva encounter appears in The Ringed City; it is not required for the armor.
Where to find Alva in Irithyll
From the Distant Manor bonfire, follow the route toward the Irithyll Dungeon entrance. Alva’s invasion takes place near that approach, before the dungeon entrance, according to the Dark Souls III Wiki (Wikidot). The encounter is commonly described as occurring as you leave the manor area.

Do not treat one trigger description as universal. Community references differ on the exact conditions: the Fandom character page says the Irithyll invasion begins when you leave the manor doorway and will not happen if Yhorm has been defeated, while the Wikidot entry emphasizes the location. If Alva does not appear, your progression or game state may be relevant.
What Alva drops and how to get the Alva Set
- Defeat Alva in Irithyll. His invasion is the step tied to making the armor available.
- Enter Irithyll Dungeon and find Karla’s cell. After Alva has been defeated, the Alva Set can be found in the dungeon near her cell, as described by the Alva Set reference.
The set consists of Alva’s armor pieces. Separately, the Murakumo is identified as his weapon, and the Wikidot reference lists it as a guaranteed drop from the Irithyll encounter. That reference also says the player must be Embered for the invasion. Alva is listed with a Murakumo +4 and Arbalest +4, but those equipment listings should not be confused with a guarantee that every listed item drops.

Alva’s equipment and combat style
Alva is described as wearing the Alva Set and wielding the Murakumo and an Arbalest. The Fandom character page notes that he uses the Murakumo’s Spin Slash at close range and fires the crossbow when the player keeps their distance. These are community wiki strategy notes, rather than independently verified combat testing.
What the item descriptions reveal about Alva
The Alva Armor item description, reproduced by the Dark Souls III Wiki, calls it the protection of “Alva, seeker of the spurned” and says the steel body armor was trimmed to reduce weight. Its lore text says troubadours sing of Alva’s travels and his involvement with “the saint and the witch,” with the songs traditionally ending in tragedy.

The Murakumo description adds that the search for the spurned “had no end,” and that the wayfaring knight warmed to a most deformed weapon. Together, these passages suggest a wandering knight defined by an unresolved search and tragic associations. The item text does not establish a definitive account of who the saint and witch were or what happened to them.

A second Alva encounter is reported in The Ringed City DLC, separate from the Irithyll invasion. The Fandom character page associates that encounter with the Wolf Ring +3 reward and says it does not require Ember status. The Wikidot Seeker of the Spurned entry describes the Ringed City figure as appearing without recollection of his name. This DLC appearance is not needed to obtain the Irithyll Alva Set.
