These ten picks cover different kinds of space-set fear, from a relentless pursuit on a station to survival horror aboard a damaged ship. Use the descriptions to find the kind of tension you want, rather than treating the order as a measured scare score.
How to choose a space-horror game
Consider what you want to do when danger appears. Some games make evasion and concealment central; others give you weapons and make combat part of the horror. A puzzle-led thriller can feel unsettling without constant monster encounters, while cosmic horror leans on uncertainty and atmosphere. Setting matters too: a spacecraft, orbital station, or Mars outpost offers a different kind of isolation.
Check the current platform listing, age rating, difficulty options, and accessibility features for your region and edition before buying. Availability and store details can change, and the games below are grouped by the kind of experience they offer—not by an empirical measure of scariness.
10 frightening games set in space
1. Dead Space (original or remake) — claustrophobic survival horror
For a concentrated survival-horror experience, start aboard the USG Ishimura. The repair mission becomes a fight to survive as Isaac Clarke moves through the ship’s wrecked workspaces and confronts grotesque threats. EA highlights the ship’s eerie soundscape and unpredictable tense moments, while PlayStation describes interconnected spaces, tools repurposed for combat, and an intensity director that adjusts encounters. EA’s Dead Space page and the PlayStation game page provide official details.

2. Alien: Isolation — the fear of being hunted
Amanda Ripley’s story brings stealth and evasion to the foreground. On a space station, she pursues answers connected to the Nostromo’s flight recorder while a dangerous creature turns movement and hiding into high-stakes decisions. This is the pick for players who find a persistent pursuer more frightening than waves of enemies to defeat. The premise and film connection are outlined in Space.com’s space-horror roundup.

3. Moons of Madness — cosmic dread on Mars
This first-person option combines science-fiction trappings with Lovecraftian influence on a Mars setting. Its appeal is less about a straightforward monster hunt than the unease of a remote outpost and the possibility that what is happening exceeds a familiar explanation. Choose it for atmospheric cosmic horror rather than a combat-first experience. Space.com’s overview describes its setting and influences.
4. We Went Back — an abandoned station in a shorter format
This free-to-play indie game is set on an abandoned space station and suits players looking for a compact dose of isolation and mystery. Space.com characterizes it as completable in under 50 minutes; treat that as the outlet’s estimate, not a guaranteed playtime, since pace and exploration vary. See Space.com’s entry for its description.

5. Observation — a station thriller seen through its computer
Observation changes the usual point of view: the story is presented through S.A.M., the station’s computer, giving the player a limited perspective on events. Its puzzle- and thriller-oriented structure makes it a strong alternative if you want to investigate an unfolding crisis rather than rely on combat. Space.com’s roundup describes the premise.
6. Hellpoint — punishing action horror around a black hole
Set on the Irid Novo station orbiting a black hole, Hellpoint blends a science-fiction setting with challenging action-RPG combat. Its difficulty is part of the experience, but that is distinct from stealth-based tension: expect to engage threats rather than spend the whole game hiding from one. It may suit players who want oppressive atmosphere alongside demanding fights. Space.com’s description covers its setting and action-RPG style.

7. DOOM 3: BFG Edition — action with a dark edge
DOOM 3: BFG Edition is the action-forward choice on this list. Its dark atmosphere places it closer to horror than the franchise’s faster, more overtly power-fantasy approach, but it still offers combat rather than making helplessness the central mechanic. Pick it if you want to fight through a threatening science-fiction setting. Space.com’s roundup makes that tonal distinction.
8. Prey (2017) — an immersive-sim take on alien danger
Prey places a hostile alien species in an alternate-timeline science-fiction setting and gives the player room to approach danger through an immersive-sim and shooter structure. That flexibility and action emphasis distinguish it from a pure stealth-horror game. It is a good fit if you want an unsettling space setting but also enjoy exploring and responding to threats with more agency. See Space.com’s overview.

9. System Shock — classic station-based sci-fi horror
System Shock’s Citadel Station becomes a hostile environment after SHODAN takes control, with crew members transformed into cyborgs and mutants. Its classic immersive-sim style makes exploration and interaction central to the appeal, alongside its science-fiction horror. Choose it if you are interested in a foundational station scenario and do not mind a more old-school design sensibility. Space.com’s roundup summarizes the premise.
10. SOMA — an Earthbound bonus, not a space setting
SOMA belongs here only as an adjacent recommendation: despite sharing science-fiction, AI, and body-horror themes, it takes place in an underwater facility on Earth, not in space. Its oppressive isolation may appeal to readers seeking the same broad unease, but it does not meet a literal space-setting criterion. ESRB rates it Mature 17+ for Blood and Gore, Nudity, Strong Language, and Violence; consult the ESRB rating summary for its content description. Space.com also explicitly identifies its underwater setting in the roundup.
