10 Tips for Building a Strong Magic: The Gathering Foundations Sealed Deck

Foundations’ launch Prerelease was in 2024, but its Sealed fundamentals still apply: choose colors your pool supports, build to 40 cards, and balance lands, early plays, answers, and threats.

Magic: The Gathering Foundations launched on November 15, 2024, so its launch Prerelease is no longer upcoming. If you’re revisiting that event—or preparing for a similar Sealed tournament—the core challenge is the same: build the strongest 40-card deck your opened pool can support. These ten tips follow Wizards of the Coast’s Foundations Prerelease guidance, while treating its color-pair themes as clues rather than rules.

What to expect at a Foundations Prerelease

Wizards presents Prereleases as welcoming events for learning a set and trying its cards. Foundations events commonly used Sealed Deck: you opened the event product, built a deck from its cards and added basic lands. The Foundations Prerelease Pack contained six Play Boosters, a traditional foil year-stamped rare or mythic promo, a storage box, a spindown life counter, and an MTG Arena code card in select regions. Those are historical product details, not a statement about current stock. Wizards’ 2024 product announcement and its Foundations Prerelease Guide document the event and pack.

10 tips for building your Sealed deck

1. Sort your pool by color

Lay out the cards by color before choosing a deck. This makes it easier to compare how many playable cards each color offers and spot where your strongest options are. Keep an eye out for artifacts and multicolor cards too, but begin by understanding the colored sections of your pool.

2. Choose colors from the cards you opened

Start by comparing the two-color combinations your pool can actually support. Weigh the quality and quantity of playable cards, removal, early plays, mana demands, and whether the cards work together. Don’t choose a pair just because its theme sounds fun; a promising archetype cannot make weak or too few cards into a cohesive deck.

  • RARE AND MYTHICAL RARE CARDS - Each play pack is 1-4 rare or better cards, as well as a chance for the mythical rare "Special Guest" card adorned with a captivating alternative border from years of game history

3. Find the cards that can win the game

Identify your most consequential threats: creatures that can take over combat, planeswalkers, or spells that create a decisive advantage. Then ask what the rest of your deck needs to do to make those cards matter. A powerful expensive creature needs time and mana; an evasive threat may benefit from a plan that clears blockers or protects it.

4. Give removal real weight

Removal answers opposing creatures that would otherwise stall your plan or defeat you. Compare answers alongside threats when choosing colors, and consider whether a card can handle the kinds of creatures you are likely to face. Wizards’ guide highlights options across the colors, including Burst Lightning, Stab, Banishing Light, and Bushwhack. A slower deck especially needs ways to keep the opponent’s threats in check.

5. Keep the deck at 40 cards

For most Sealed games, Wizards recommends exactly 40 cards. Adding extras makes it less likely that you draw your strongest cards, so include only cards that earn their place. Basic lands count toward the total.

6. Start with 17 lands, then check your mana

The official starting template is 17 lands and 23 nonland cards. Jubilee Finnegan, author of Wizards’ 2024 guide, writes: “You’ll generally want to play 17 lands in your sealed deck, with 23 nonland cards filling out the rest of your 40-card deck.” For a two-color deck, a 9/8 split is a common starting point, not a fixed rule. Adjust for the colored mana symbols your spells require, any fixing in the pool, and how much of your deck costs more or less mana.

7. Build a curve that can play early

A deck needs useful plays before the most powerful cards become affordable. Wizards offers this sample mana-curve template for a 40-card Sealed deck:

Mana value Sample number of cards
1 1–2
2 7–8
3 5–6
4 3–4
5 2–3
6 0–1

This is a guide, not a quota. Use the cards your pool provides, but notice if too many spells cost four or more mana: you may spend early turns unable to affect the game.

8. Use color-pair themes as clues, not mandates

Foundations’ ten color-pair themes can help you see synergies in a pool. They are not instructions to force those colors in Sealed:

  • White-blue: flying
  • Blue-black: graveyard
  • Black-red: raid
  • Red-green: power
  • Green-white: +1/+1 counters
  • White-black: life gain
  • Blue-red: spells
  • Black-green: morbid
  • Red-white: aggro
  • Green-blue: ramp

When a pair has cards that support its theme and enough strong playables, the theme can help your deck cohere. If the pool lacks those pieces, prioritize the actual cards you can build with.

9. Make the deck’s plan match its cards

Creatures are the backbone of Foundations Sealed games, but the right plan depends on the pool. An aggressive build needs early creatures and a reliable way to keep attacking. A slower build can use blockers and removal to buy time for bigger threats. Check that your chosen cards contribute to the same broad plan rather than leaving you with an assortment that cannot pressure or stabilize.

10. Ask questions and enjoy the event

Prereleases are designed to be approachable places to explore a set. If you’re new to Sealed, ask the store or other players for help with deck construction and event logistics. Wizards’ guide also encourages newer players to choose cards they’re excited to play in a casual learning environment. For current event details, use Wizards’ event information or check with a local game store; schedules vary.
