Platforming horror is at its best when a jump, hiding place, or dark corridor feels dangerous—not merely when a game looks unsettling. A defensible ranking should weigh how explicitly a game uses horror, how oppressive its atmosphere is, how danger reaches the player, and how central platforming is to play. The available verified examples support four recommendations, not a reliable top ten, so this guide focuses on those games rather than padding the list with unverified picks.
How to read this list
“Scariest” is subjective: there is no shared scare score behind these picks. The order below reflects horror framing and atmosphere alongside how clearly each game is identified as a platformer. The evidence is strongest for INSIDE, Little Nightmares, and Little Nightmares III; the available source for LIMBO establishes a horror association but does not document its mechanics or comparative intensity.

Scary platforming games to consider
1. INSIDE
INSIDE is the clearest fit when you want unsettling atmosphere with firmly established platforming credentials. Playdead describes it as a dark, narrative-driven platformer combining intense action and challenging puzzles. Steam categorizes it as a 2.5D puzzle platformer and includes atmospheric, dark, and horror tags. Those descriptions support its place here, but they do not amount to a measured ranking of how frightening it is. Playdead’s INSIDE page and its Steam listing provide the descriptions and tags.
2. Little Nightmares
Little Nightmares puts platforming in a nightmare setting. Bandai Namco describes Six’s world as part dream and part nightmare, with every step feeling perilous and darkness looming; Steam categorizes the game as horror and puzzle-platforming. Its official framing makes the horror intent explicit, while the storefront tags confirm the platforming connection. These sources support the combination, not a universal claim that it is scarier than every other game. See Bandai Namco’s official game page and the Steam listing.
#1 Best Overall
- Gorgeous Pixel Art & Animation: The game captures the essence of the Terrifier films with bright, cartoonish pixel art and fluid animations that vividly depict the gruesome action.
- Multiplayer Mayhem: Team up with up to 4 players for a chaotic local co-op experience. Work together—or against each other—in various game modes. Travel through multiple stages, each with different paths to explore and enemies to defeat. Prepare yourself for intense boss battles that will test your skills.
- Bloody Arsenal of Weapons: From chainsaws to cleavers, pick up a variety of weapons to turn your enemies into bloody pulp. Enjoy hilarious and gory attacks that make every fight as entertaining as it is brutal. The finishing moves are guaranteed to leave a gory delight impression! Relive the golden age of gaming with a glorious chiptune soundtrack that perfectly complements the retro aesthetic.
- Multiple Game Modes: With 6 different game modes, whether you're looking for a quick beat 'em up session or an extended challenge, there's a mode that fits your style.
- Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (LATAM), and Spanish (Spain) in game text.
3. Little Nightmares III
Little Nightmares III is another option for players drawn to cinematic platformers set in nightmare worlds. PC Gamer’s 2025 review used that description and listed October 10, 2025 as the release date. That is a critic’s description published in 2025, not proof of an objective scare level or a comparative ranking. Read the dated assessment at PC Gamer’s review.
4. LIMBO
LIMBO belongs in a horror-adjacent shortlist, but the available source supports a narrower claim than it does for the games above: PlayStation notes the game’s association with an IGN Best Horror Game award. That signals a horror reputation; the PlayStation page alone does not establish its mechanics, the extent to which platforming defines play, or how frightening it is relative to other titles. See PlayStation’s LIMBO page.
Rank #2
- This pack contains the first three chapters in the Poppy Playtime saga
- Each chapter features engaging new toy characters that can be either friend or foe
- Survive and progress by solving challenging puzzles
- Each game reveals to you a newly discovered area of the massive toy factory
- The Poppy Playtime Triple Pack includes a reversible coversheet and a Poppy Playtime sticker sheet
Which one should you start with?
- For platforming credentials and a dark, atmospheric presentation: start with INSIDE, whose publisher explicitly calls it a platformer and whose Steam listing identifies it as a 2.5D puzzle platformer.
- For an explicit nightmare premise: choose Little Nightmares, which its publisher frames as a perilous world between dream and nightmare.
- For a newer entry described as cinematic horror-platforming: consider Little Nightmares III, keeping in mind that the cited characterization comes from a 2025 review.
- For a game with a documented horror-game association but less detail in the cited source: consider LIMBO.
Why this is not a complete top ten
A credible ten-game ranking needs evidence for ten distinct titles: at minimum, a reliable description of each game’s platforming and a clear basis for calling its horror relevant. The available sources establish only four candidates, and they do not support a shared scare scale or a complete comparison. Adding six names without comparable verification would make the list look more certain than the evidence allows.
