Fallout: New Vegas is a choice-driven role-playing game set in a Mojave shaped by competing factions. Before you start, it helps to know how its story, combat, difficulty options, downloadable content, and PC troubleshooting fit together—without locking yourself into a particular character build or ending.
1. You enter a faction conflict, not a linear corridor
The Mojave’s central conflict gives you room to decide how your Courier approaches its people and competing powers. The official Steam description says your choices affect which characters, allies, and enemies you encounter, as well as the conflict’s outcome. Expect a role-playing journey shaped by decisions, rather than a story that simply funnels every player through the same sequence.
2. Relationships and reputation matter
The game tracks reputation and presents choice-driven interactions. Bethesda’s publisher page frames the broad directions around the New California Republic (NCR), Caesar’s Legion, and an independent Courier. You do not need to pick a side before playing: learn about the groups and decide through your character’s encounters and priorities. The available official descriptions establish that choices and reputation are part of the experience, but do not document a specific consequence for every possible action.
3. V.A.T.S. and real-time combat coexist
You can fight in real time or use V.A.T.S. to pause the action, target body parts, and queue attacks. The official Steam description presents both approaches, so the game does not require you to use only one. Try each and see which suits a particular encounter or your preferred pace.

4. Build around the play you enjoy
Character choices can support different emphases, including conversation, combat, exploration, and interactions with factions. There is no definitive beginner build established by the official material here, and you do not need to follow a preset to get started. As a practical approach, think about what you want your Courier to be good at, then make choices that reinforce that role. If you are unsure, treat early character decisions as a way to discover your preferences rather than a test with one correct answer.
5. Ordinary difficulty and Hardcore Mode are separate
The manual treats combat difficulty and Hardcore Mode as distinct options. Ordinary difficulty adjusts the challenge of combat; Hardcore Mode adds survival and inventory rules. You can choose a regular difficulty without enabling Hardcore. The game manual describes the options and their separation.

6. Hardcore Mode adds ongoing upkeep
Hardcore asks you to manage more than combat. According to the manual, you must eat, sleep, and stay hydrated; ammunition has weight; and damaged limbs require Doctor’s Bags or treatment from a doctor. The mode can be toggled in the options, but earning its achievement requires leaving it enabled for the entire game after the initial prompt.
7. Use the Pip-Boy to orient yourself
The Pip-Boy’s Data section gathers tools that help you follow the world and your next steps. The manual lists local and world maps, quests, notes, and radio there. When you are unsure where to go, check your quests and map markers; the radio can also introduce content beyond the main journey. These features are documented in the manual.

8. Story DLC quests appear after you enter the Mojave
The four story add-ons—Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road—each introduce a radio signal and quest after you first enter the Mojave. Their markers are invitations, not a reason you must immediately leave whatever you were doing. Follow one when you are ready, or keep exploring and return later. Bethesda’s support page explains where each begins but does not prescribe a recommended order.
9. Not every add-on is a story expansion
Two other add-ons serve different purposes. Bethesda’s support information distinguishes:

10. Check what Ultimate Edition includes before buying
Bethesda describes Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition as the full game plus six add-on pieces: the four story packs, Courier’s Stash, and Gun Runners’ Arsenal. That is the publisher’s stated contents, not a guarantee that every storefront listing has the same platform, format, region, availability, or price. Confirm those details on the specific offer before purchase. Bethesda’s support page describes the add-ons, and its publisher page identifies the edition.

Bethesda’s published PC requirements list Windows 7, Vista, or XP; a dual-core 2 GHz processor; 2 GB of RAM; 10 GB of storage; and older graphics-card families. These specifications are useful historical guidance, not a guarantee that the game will install or launch on a current Windows system. 12. If the PC version will not launch, start with official checks
Bethesda recommends a set of troubleshooting steps rather than promising one universal fix. Its support guidance includes:
- Check that your system meets the published requirements and update your graphics drivers.
- Verify the game files through Steam.
- Disconnect a controller while launching the game.
- On a laptop with multiple GPUs, check that the game is using the intended graphics processor.
- Review the other Windows settings and troubleshooting steps on Bethesda’s page.
The right fix depends on the system and the failure; work through the relevant checks rather than assuming any one step applies to every PC.
Optional: the 15th-anniversary bundle
Bethesda announced a 2026 PC bundle featuring Ultimate Edition as a digital code, along with a Victor statue, evaluation cards, a pin, two patches, and a collector box. That announcement establishes the bundle’s contents, not its current availability at any particular retailer.
