Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review: Stealth, Steel, and a Big Open World

Assassin’s Creed Shadows pairs Naoe’s infiltration with Yasuke’s direct combat. Its large world is a strength for some players and a source of repetition and interface clutter for others.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is best suited to players who want to alternate between stealth-led infiltration and direct weapon combat inside a large action-RPG. Naoe is the more specialized choice for sneaking, movement, and assassination; Yasuke is built for facing enemies with weapons, blocks, and parries. The trade-off is scale: the expansive world and layered systems can be a draw, but reviewers have also criticized repetition and interface clutter.

Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows better for stealth or samurai combat?

It offers both, through two protagonists designed around different approaches. Ubisoft describes Naoe as a shinobi who uses concealment, tools, parkour, and assassination. Yasuke is oriented toward direct combat, with attacks, blocks, parries, and a range of weapons. Ubisoft says quests can be approached with either character, though each has separate progression, stats, skills, and gear.

That split makes the central choice less “stealth or combat for the whole game” than “which character and approach suit this encounter?” The game’s official descriptions set out the intended roles; they are not independent proof that every stealth or combat system works equally well in practice.

Character Best fit Tools and approach described by Ubisoft
Naoe Players who enjoy avoiding detection and planning an infiltration Uses noise, light, and shadows; can distract guards with kunai, shuriken, and smoke bombs; uses a grappling hook and parkour; assassinates with a hidden blade.
Yasuke Players who prefer confronting enemies with weapons Built around attacks, blocks, and parries, with weapons including katana, kanabo, bows, and naginata.

What does Naoe’s stealth involve?

Ubisoft’s stealth overview describes a design centered on the character’s own senses rather than the companion eagle used to scout and map locations in earlier series entries. The intended rhythm is to observe, use concealment and tools, then adapt as the situation changes.

Naoe’s listed options include distracting guards, moving through a location with parkour and a grappling hook, and striking with a hidden blade. The design description points toward tactical improvisation, but it does not establish how consistently those mechanics perform in play.

Can Yasuke use stealth?

Yes, although direct combat is his main emphasis. Ubisoft’s stealth article says Yasuke can attack from a distance with a bow without drawing his katana, and can carry out a deliberate melee assassination from behind. He is not presented as a second Naoe: his core identity is weapon-focused combat, with limited opportunities to approach some situations quietly.

For players drawn to parries, dodges, and varied attacks, Le Monde’s review says Yasuke’s technical combat can be rewarding. That is the reviewer’s judgment, not a guarantee that the combat will suit every player.

How large and demanding is the open-world structure?

Ubisoft places the story in late-Sengoku Japan and describes towns, ports, shrines, pastoral landscapes, changing seasons, unpredictable weather, and reactive environments. The setting draws on historical figures and circumstances, but the game is a dramatized historical-fantasy narrative, not a documentary account.

Reviewers disagree on whether the scale is a strength or a burden. Windows Central praised the world, gameplay refinement, and dual-protagonist setup, while noting a very long playthrough. Its reviewer wrote, “When the credits finally rolled in Assassin’s Creed Shadows — after 112 hours of exploring Japan as Naoe and Yasuke — it took a very long time to roll.” That is one reviewer’s reported playthrough in a March 18, 2025 review, not an average completion-time estimate.

Le Monde was more critical of the familiar open-world structure. Its review argues that infiltration gives ground to action and climbing gives ground to exploration, and points to repetitive activities, indicators, notifications, menus, and layered level systems as interruptions to immersion. These are distinct critical perspectives, not a single settled consensus: the same broad scope that one player enjoys may feel overlong or over-managed to another.

Who is Assassin’s Creed Shadows for?

  • A good fit: You want to choose between a stealth specialist and a combat-focused protagonist, and enjoy exploring a broad, detailed setting.
  • Think carefully: You are sensitive to repeated open-world activities, frequent interface prompts, menus, or multiple progression systems.
  • Consider your preferred combat: Naoe’s tools and concealment are the closer match for infiltration; Yasuke is the more direct route to weapon combat, with some stealth options.

Windows Central reports adjustable combat, exploration, and stealth difficulty, guaranteed assassinations, configurable controls, and HUD and audio settings. Those are the reviewer’s reported findings, not a complete official accessibility inventory.
