Atomfall review: making the post-apocalypse quintessentially British

Atomfall’s alternate-history mystery and rural English setting make it distinctive, even as uneven combat and light survival mechanics blunt the adventure.

Atomfall is at its best when it lets you investigate a strange corner of rural England on your own terms. Its clue-led mystery and unmistakable setting make it a distinctive post-apocalyptic adventure, though uneven combat, limited stealth, and lightweight survival systems keep it from being a fully convincing all-rounder.

What is Atomfall about?

Rebellion’s first-person survival-action game begins with an alternate version of history. PlayStation describes it as taking place five years after the Windscale nuclear disaster in northern England, inside a fictional quarantine zone. The real Windscale fire happened in 1957; Atomfall imagines a far more severe catastrophe and its aftermath, rather than depicting the historical event as it happened. PlayStation’s game listing introduces a countryside of villages, caves, bunkers, cults, and rogue government agencies.

You wake inside the exclusion zone and try to understand what happened and how to get out. The premise draws on Cold War unease and folk horror, but its most noticeable distinction is the setting: northern English countryside and village life, rather than a more familiar post-apocalyptic cityscape. Rick Lane of The Guardian praised the mystery while arguing that some of the cultural references feel superficial. That tension captures the setting’s appeal and its limits: the place is unusual, even when every detail does not feel equally developed.

How do investigation and progression work?

Atomfall is structured around gathering information, not simply following a conventional chain of marked quests. You explore, talk to people, examine locations, and pick up clues. Those discoveries create Leads: ideas about where to go or what to investigate next. You can pursue a theory, leave it aside, or uncover another route through the zone.

Atomfall - PlayStation 5
  • Player Driven Mystery: Unravel a tapestry of interwoven narratives through exploration, conversation, investigation, and combat, where every choice you make has consequences.
  • Explore this Green and Unpleasant Land: The picturesque British countryside, with rolling green hills, lush valleys, and rural villages belie the dangers that await you.
  • Search, Scavage, Survive: You’ll need to scavenge for supplies, craft weapons and items, and fight desperately to make it our alive!
  • “Basic Supply Bundle” - Supplies are scarce in the quarantine zone. Improve your chances for survival with additional items to find, including an exclusive melee weapon to help you in those brutal close-quarters engagements. o Exclusive Melee Weapon Variant o Additional Loot Caches o Item Recipe

That freedom is the game’s clearest strength. Push Square highlights the Leads system and the ability to follow or abandon theories; Game Informer also values progression driven by exploration and information. The trade-off is that players who want a tightly directed objective list may find the experience less straightforward. The game asks you to connect information and choose your next move, rather than always telling you exactly what to do.

Is Atomfall an open-world game?

It is more accurate to call Atomfall an open-zone game than a seamless open world. Reviews describe distinct areas connected by transitions, with room to explore within each area. The publications differ in how they count or describe those areas, so there is no need to treat a single zone total as definitive.

Cronos - PlayStation 5
  • Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
  • Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
  • The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
  • The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
  • This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.

This structure gives the game space for wandering and investigation without presenting one uninterrupted landscape. If you are comparing it with another game, the useful distinction is not a particular map count, but whether you prefer connected areas with local discoveries or a continuous world.

How much survival, combat, and stealth are there?

The official activity loop includes scavenging, crafting, barter, fighting, and conversation. In practice, reviewers disagree about how substantial those survival systems feel. Game Informer describes scarce supplies, resource hunting, crafting, healing in real time, and adjustable difficulty. Push Square notes the absence of hunger, thirst, and sleep meters, while The Guardian calls crafting rudimentary. Survival here is therefore not necessarily a comprehensive needs-management simulation; it is a set of pressures and resource decisions within an action-adventure.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition - PlayStation 5
  • FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
  • DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
  • A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

Combat and stealth drew more consistent reservations. Game Informer found combat unforgiving, though difficulty can be adjusted. The Guardian criticized both combat and stealth, and Push Square judged those systems less successful than the investigation. PC Gamer likewise felt that the game’s mechanics did not combine into a sufficiently clear identity. These are assessments from launch-period reviews, not claims about every player’s experience or the game’s current patch state.

What makes the setting feel British—and does it work?

The rural backdrop, village characters, local details, and folk-horror atmosphere give Atomfall a stronger identity than its broad survival-action label suggests. Reviewers including PC Gamer and Tom’s Guide also singled out the setting as a distinguishing feature. The result is a particular mix of countryside unease and Cold War paranoia rather than a generic ruined-world backdrop.

Whether the game fully makes good on that promise is a matter of critical judgment. Lane’s Guardian review found the mystery and rural details compelling but felt some cultural references were superficial. Fraser Brown’s PC Gamer verdict was that “Atomfall can be a fun diversion, but it really needs to take a gap year so it can find itself.” The line reflects his criticism of the game’s uneven focus, not a neutral description of its quality.

Who should play Atomfall?

Atomfall is a stronger fit for players who enjoy piecing together a mystery through clues, conversations, and environmental exploration than for those seeking polished combat or deep survival simulation. It may also appeal if the prospect of a post-apocalyptic story rooted in rural northern England sounds more interesting than another familiar wasteland.

Verdict

Atomfall makes its strongest case through its investigative freedom and unusually specific setting. The Leads give exploration a purpose, and the fictional quarantine zone supplies a memorable backdrop for its mystery. But the combat, stealth, and survival mechanics do not consistently match the promise of that premise. It is worth considering for the British post-apocalyptic mystery at its center, provided you are more interested in discovering what happened than in demanding a finely tuned action-survival system.
