Keep the Dark Mind if you want to hear its optional dialogue. You can collect it near Shadowheart’s pod on the Nautiloid, then use it in Act Two at the Mind-Archive Interface in the Mind Flayer Colony. The Slack-Skinned Head responds with a comic song; the jar does not grant a permanent buff.
Where to find the Dark Mind
During the Prologue, look near Shadowheart’s pod aboard the Nautiloid at X: 4, Y: -363. The Dark Mind is a humanoid brain suspended in cerebrospinal fluid. The item reference lists it as common, weighing 5 kg (10 lb) and worth 1 gp. BG3 Wiki: Dark Mind
How to use it in Act Two
- After the rooftop fight against Ketheric Thorm at Moonrise Towers, jump down into the Mind Flayer Colony.
- Find the Mind-Archive Interface at X: 699, Y: -117.
- Place the Dark Mind in the interface to speak through the Slack-Skinned Head.
The head sings a comic song about wanting his brother’s wife. You can interact with the head again to repeat the song. The colony and interface details are documented in the BG3 Wiki’s Mind Flayer Colony reference.
Is the Dark Mind worth keeping?
Keeping it is worthwhile if you want to see its optional scene, but it is not a gameplay upgrade. The item reference does not establish whether selling it causes another later consequence; keep it until you reach the colony if you want to hear the dialogue.

Dark Mind versus Waking Mind
Not all brain jars at the interface have the same payoff. The Dark Mind offers dialogue flavor, while the Waking Mind—found behind the brain-mapping puzzle—can grant the permanent Githzerai Mind Barrier after its conversation.
| Jar | Dialogue or story | Gameplay reward | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dark Mind | The Slack-Skinned Head sings a comic song; the interaction can be repeated. | No permanent buff is associated with it. | Near Shadowheart’s pod on the Nautiloid in the Prologue. |
| Waking Mind | Conversation through the Mind-Archive Interface. | Can grant the permanent Githzerai Mind Barrier. | Behind the brain-mapping puzzle in the Mind Flayer Colony. |
Both jar interactions are optional. For broader official game context, see Larian Studios’ Community Update #22.
