The best Hitman game depends on what you value, but Blood Money is the strongest pick among the classic releases, while the modern trilogy offers the most expansive sandbox design. This ranking covers the eight mainline games from Hitman: Codename 47 (2000) through HITMAN 3 (2021). It is an editorial judgment based on mission design, freedom, replayability, stealth systems, and each game’s role in the series—not a definitive or consensus list.
How this ranking works
Hitman games are built around reaching a target and choosing how to do it. The comparison here weighs five things: freedom to plan and execute an assassination, useful alternate approaches on replay, mission and location design, how clearly stealth systems communicate risk, and the game’s influence on what followed. Those criteria reflect the series’ emphasis on stealth, tactical problem solving, player choice, and replayability; they do not produce an objectively correct order.
The original mainline sequence has eight releases. The modern entries—HITMAN (2016), HITMAN 2 (2018), and HITMAN 3 (2021)—are ranked as separate historical games, even though their content was later brought together under the HITMAN World of Assassination name.
The 8 best Hitman games, ranked
8. Hitman: Codename 47 (2000)
The game that introduced Agent 47 and established the series’ contract-assassin premise earns its place through its historical importance. Its missions introduced the core appeal: study a target’s surroundings, find an opening, and decide how to carry out the job.
#1 Best Overall
- ENTER THE WORLD OF THE ULTIMATE ASSASSIN - HITMAN World of Assassination brings together the best of HITMAN, HITMAN 2 and HITMAN 3 including the main campaign, contracts mode, escalations, elusive target arcades and featured live content.
- BECOME AGENT 47 - Suit up for a spy-thriller adventure where all your deadly abilities are put to the test across more than 20 locations.
- FREEDOM OF APPROACH - Your deadliest weapon is creativity. Unlock new gear and up your game on highly replayable missions.
- WORLD OF ASSASSINATION - Travel a living, breathing world, filled with intriguing characters and lethal opportunities.
- HITMAN FREELANCER - A new way to play on your own terms, that combines rogue-like elements and deep strategic planning with a persistent and infinitely replayable gameplay experience.
Its design is an early, less polished expression of that idea than the later games. By the criteria used here, it offers a narrower and rougher foundation for stealth and replay than the entries that refined the series. It ranks last not because its role is minor, but because later games made its central formula more flexible and readable.
7. Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (2002)
Silent Assassin expanded the original’s premise into a broader sequel and helped establish the early series’ identity. It is an important step toward the more deliberate stealth-and-planning structure associated with later Hitman games.
Compared with the strongest entries, its approach to missions and stealth feels less fully developed. It ranks above Codename 47 for advancing the formula, but below the games that give players more compelling reasons to revisit a location and try a different plan.
6. Hitman: Contracts (2004)
Contracts revisits and reshapes material from the series’ earlier period, giving it a darker tone and a tighter sense of atmosphere. That focus makes it a distinctive entry rather than simply another step toward bigger, more elaborate sandboxes.

Its narrower identity is also its limit in this ranking: atmosphere is a clear strength, but the game does not represent the same leap in freedom and replayable mission design as the entries above it. It is a worthwhile part of the early run, especially for players interested in how the series developed between Silent Assassin and Blood Money.
5. Hitman: Absolution (2012)
Absolution stands apart from the surrounding games. It takes Agent 47 through a more directed, story-led experience, giving the series a different rhythm from its larger contract sandboxes.
That shift makes it useful as a change of pace, but it ranks below the games that put open-ended target planning and replay at the center. Its position reflects a trade-off: a stronger focus on a guided narrative comes at the expense of the broad mission freedom that defines the top entries in this list.
4. HITMAN 3 (2021)
HITMAN 3 closes the modern trilogy with a set of missions that benefit from the systems and format developed across the preceding two releases. It is the most natural endpoint for the trilogy’s arc and a strong showcase for the modern sandbox approach.
Rank #3
- BECOME AGENT 47 - Suit up for a spy-thriller adventure where all your deadly abilities are put to the test across more than 20 locations.
- FREEDOM OF APPROACH - Your deadliest weapon is creativity. Unlock new gear and up your game on highly replayable missions
- WORLD OF ASSASSINATION - Travel in a living, breathing world, filled with intriguing characters and lethal opportunities.
It lands fourth because its strengths are partly the result of a trilogy-wide evolution rather than a wholly separate reinvention. As a standalone historical release, it is a polished culmination; as a ranking of individual games, it does not quite displace the entries that established or broadened the modern formula.
3. HITMAN (2016)
The 2016 HITMAN reboot re-established the series around large, replayable locations and multiple ways to approach a target. Its position reflects how effectively it set the modern trilogy’s foundation: the player can observe, improvise, and return to a mission with a different plan.
It ranks just below the two entries that followed because it is the beginning of that modern framework, not its fullest expression. For anyone asking where to start with the contemporary design of Hitman, it remains a natural first chapter—though the current digital product structure is different from the original release, as explained below.
2. HITMAN 2 (2018)
HITMAN 2 builds on the 2016 game’s modern sandbox structure, with more locations and opportunities to experiment. It is a strong balance of the series’ core pleasures: planning, disguise, stealth, and replaying a mission to uncover another route to the target.

- ENTER THE WORLD OF THE ULTIMATE ASSASSIN: HITMAN World of Assassination brings together the best of HITMAN, HITMAN 2 and HITMAN 3 including the main campaign, Contracts mode, Escalation, Elusive Target arcades, featured live content andand the roguelike inspired game mode HITMAN: Freelancer.
- BECOME AGENT 47: Suit up for a spy-thriller adventure where all your deadly abilities are put to the test across more than 20 locations.
- FREEDOM OF APPROACH: Your deadliest weapon is creativity. Unlock new gear and up your game on highly replayable missions.
- WORLD OF ASSASSINATION: Travel a living, breathing world, filled with intriguing characters and lethal opportunities.
It narrowly misses the top spot because the final entry in this ranking represents the most complete modern package and the endpoint of the trilogy’s evolution. Still, HITMAN 2 is an excellent choice for players who want the modern formula at full strength without treating the series’ newest release as an automatic winner.
1. Hitman: Blood Money (2006)
Blood Money is the highest-ranked classic and the key hinge in the series’ early run. It brings together the planning, disguise, and improvisation that make Hitman work, while giving its missions room to reward repeat play and alternate solutions.
Its first-place position is an editorial call, not proof that it is universally considered the best. It ranks here because it represents the early games at their most compelling while also serving as an important bridge to the broader sandbox design of the modern trilogy. Players who prioritize contemporary scale and systems may prefer one of the newer games instead.

What to buy today: World of Assassination
The three modern releases remain separate entries in this ranking, but IO Interactive changed their digital packaging. IOI says HITMAN 3 became HITMAN World of Assassination, with HITMAN 1 and HITMAN 2 content available through its Access Pass system. Its support page also describes HITMAN Trilogy as a combined package for the World of Assassination trilogy. These descriptions concern digital products; check the live store listing for your platform and confirm exactly which edition and add-ons it includes. They do not establish the contents of every physical listing or guarantee that every DLC is included.
For the classic games, availability can vary by platform and store. The available official information does not establish a complete, current platform-by-platform inventory, so check the listing for the specific game and system before buying.
A future classic remaster announcement
On June 5, 2026, Xbox Wire reported that HITMAN Classic Trilogy Remastered—a compilation of Codename 47, Silent Assassin, and Contracts from Saber Interactive in partnership with IO Interactive—was planned for Xbox Series X|S in 2027. That is a future release announcement, not evidence that the collection is currently available.
