15 Great Games With Permadeath Mechanics, From Run Resets to Campaign Losses

Permadeath is not one rule: these games range from optional hardcore modes and persistent progress to lost recruits and campaign wipes.

Permadeath can mean losing a single run, a recruit you have grown attached to, or an entire campaign. These 15 games offer different versions of that tension, so the best fit depends on how much you want death to erase—and whether you want the rule built in or optional.

How to choose a permadeath game

Before picking a game, check three things: what ends when you die, what progress survives, and whether you can turn the rule on or off. A run reset is not the same as losing a named character mid-campaign, and neither necessarily means the whole save is deleted. The games below are selected for the variety of those consequences and genres, not ranked by an objective score.

  • Run loss: death ends the current attempt, while the game may allow another run.
  • Character loss: an individual recruit or party member can die while the larger campaign continues.
  • Campaign loss: death can wipe the campaign or its accumulated progress.
  • Optional rules: some games let you choose a mode or setting that adds permadeath; others make it central to the experience.

15 games with different kinds of permadeath

1. Minecraft — Hardcore makes the world itself the stake

GameSpot describes Minecraft’s Hardcore mode as a challenge in which there is no coming back after death and the world’s accumulated work is lost. It is an especially direct choice if you want a long-running world to feel fragile rather than a sequence of disposable attempts. Check the mode and edition available on your platform before starting; the cited guide covers multiple platforms, but does not establish identical edition details for each one. GameSpot’s guide to games with permadeath.

2. Darkwood — death does not erase everything

Darkwood’s official site describes permadeath, but also says some things carry over to the next incarnation. That makes it a useful choice if you want death to matter without treating every loss as a total reset. The official description does not specify every retained element, so do not assume that all equipment, world state, or progress persists. Darkwood official site.

3. Wayward — choose between hardcore and casual

Wayward is a turn-based, top-down wilderness survival roguelike with procedural generation. Its official press kit distinguishes optional hardcore permadeath from casual play, where the character respawns. Choose it if you want the survival-and-exploration format but prefer to decide how final death should be. Wayward official press kit.

4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses — adjust the stakes for a tactical campaign

GameSpot notes that Fire Emblem’s permadeath system can be adjusted to player preference. That makes Three Houses a fit for players who want tactical battles and character attachment without treating one fixed death rule as mandatory. Check the selected difficulty and settings in your edition; the cited guide does not give a full setting-by-setting breakdown for Three Houses. GameSpot’s guide to games with permadeath.

5. XCOM 2 — roster losses can damage a campaign

XCOM 2 makes squad strategy a strong example of consequences that reach beyond one fight: GameSpot describes roster losses as potentially catastrophic to a campaign. If you want to care about the soldiers you send into danger and adapt after losing them, this is a natural pick. The cited description establishes the campaign impact of roster losses, not a claim that every death deletes the entire save. GameSpot’s guide to games with permadeath.

Mini Rogue – A Board Game by Ares Games 1-2 Players – Board Games for Family 30+ Minutes of Gameplay – Games for Family Game Night – for Kids and Adults Ages 12+ - English Version
  • Mini Rogue is a game profoundly inspired by roguelikes and roleplaying games. Monsters, hazards, treasures, bosses, dungeons, as well as random rooms and encounters are all featured in this new and revised version of Mini Rogue.
  • You play as an adventurer delving into a dungeon, room after room, floor after floor, area after area, level after level, to find the Og’s Blood, rumored to be a fabled and mysterious ruby gemstone.
  • Each area of the dungeon is laid out as a branching path of rooms. Each time you face two rooms, you will have to choose and explore one. You will resolve each encounter by rolling dice and managing resources to complete your adventure.
  • In each room, you may encounter a monster, find a treasure, discover a resting area, meet a merchant, dodge traps, or face many other surprising events. Each level ends with a powerful Boss monster which you will have to defeat to continue onto to the next level. You win the game by reaching the last room of the Dungeon and defeating the final Boss Monster, thus collecting the Og’s Blood.
  • 30 minutes of gameplay for 1 to 2 players, ages 12 and above.

6. Darkest Dungeon — protect a party, then prepare replacements

GameSpot highlights the danger to vulnerable party members, with combat risk and stress making preparation important. Death is not simply a failed attempt: players may need substitute teams when a party member is lost. Choose it if you want party management and risk planning to be as important as pushing forward. 7. DOOM Eternal — Ultra-Nightmare stakes the campaign on survival

For action rather than turn-based planning, DOOM Eternal’s Ultra-Nightmare mode supplies a high-stakes option: GameSpot describes it as a permadeath mode that wipes campaign progress on death. It is the clearest fit here for players who want a campaign-level reset attached to fast combat. GameSpot’s guide to games with permadeath.

8. Battle Brothers — a strategy pick from the broader field

Battle Brothers appears in G2A’s 2026 permadeath guide, making it a candidate for players exploring strategy-focused games with lasting consequences. That guide does not establish the exact current death rules or what progress persists, so check the game’s official documentation and mode settings before choosing it specifically for a particular kind of permadeath. 9. Returnal — an action roguelike candidate

Returnal is among the action-oriented candidates in G2A’s 2026 list. It may suit players who want repeated attempts and high-pressure combat rather than managing a squad, but the list alone does not establish precisely what resets or persists after death. Verify the current game documentation if retained progress is central to your decision. G2A’s 2026 permadeath guide.

10. Into the Breach — compact tactical runs

Into the Breach is another strategy candidate named by G2A’s 2026 guide. Consider it if you want a more compact tactical format than a long campaign, while checking official information for the specific reset and carryover rules rather than treating the guide’s category as a complete mechanic description. 11. Darkest Dungeon II — another party-focused option

Darkest Dungeon II appears in the 2026 candidate list alongside the first game. It is worth considering for players drawn to party-based pressure, but the cited discovery list does not provide enough detail to state exactly which losses are permanent or what carries between attempts. Confirm those specifics in official game materials before buying for a particular consequence model. G2A’s 2026 permadeath guide.

12. The Last Spell — strategy with campaign pressure

The Last Spell is included among G2A’s strategy and permadeath candidates. Its presence broadens the list beyond survival and action games; the guide does not, however, establish the exact scope of a death or the progress retained, so check official documentation for those details. G2A’s 2026 permadeath guide.

13. Cult of the Lamb — a candidate outside the usual tactical mold

Cult of the Lamb is named in G2A’s 2026 guide, offering a different genre direction from squad tactics and wilderness survival. The source does not specify a current permadeath mode or its precise consequences, so treat it as a discovery lead rather than proof of a particular death system. G2A’s 2026 permadeath guide.

14. Curse of the Dead Gods — action-focused candidate

Curse of the Dead Gods appears on G2A’s broader list. It may interest players seeking action in a permadeath-themed selection, but the guide does not document the exact mechanics of death and carryover. Check the official game description for the consequences that matter to you. G2A’s 2026 permadeath guide.

15. SYNTHETIK: Legion Rising — another run-based discovery

SYNTHETIK: Legion Rising rounds out this selection as an action-oriented candidate in G2A’s 2026 guide. Verify the game’s official information if those distinctions determine your choice. G2A’s 2026 permadeath guide.

Match the game to the consequence you want

  • Want a selectable rule? Start with Wayward’s documented hardcore and casual modes, or check the settings for Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
  • Want the world or campaign to be at stake? Minecraft Hardcore and DOOM Eternal’s Ultra-Nightmare are the most clearly documented examples here.
  • Want individual losses to reshape a continuing effort? XCOM 2 and Darkest Dungeon put roster and party-member risk in focus.
  • Want death to matter without assuming total erasure? Darkwood’s official description explicitly says some things carry to the next incarnation.

For the other candidates, confirm the exact mode, loss scope, and carryover rules in official game materials before committing to a long campaign or choosing based on a particular permadeath expectation.
