“AI-powered games” can mean two different things: games that explore artificial intelligence in their stories, and games that use generative AI while you play. Those categories are not interchangeable. SOMA is about AI; DREAMIO describes generating stories and illustrations from player input. This guide separates the two and flags where a feature’s current availability needs checking.
How to choose an AI game
Start with what you want AI to do. It might be a fictional subject, a conventional opponent controlled by game logic, or a generative system producing dialogue, story, images, or character behavior. A game featuring an AI character is not necessarily using a modern generative model during play.
- AI as a story subject: Choose this for fiction about machine intelligence, consciousness, or human identity. The AI need not generate anything in the game.
- Generative AI as a play mechanic: Look for a specific description of what is generated or how characters respond, and whether the system is live in the version you can play.
- Check the practical details: Confirm the platform and edition, genre and tone, whether the feature has shipped or is only announced or demonstrated, and whether processing requires cloud access, particular hardware, an account, or tokens.
Steam’s AI-content disclosures can help identify some uses, but a disclosure does not establish how central or useful a feature is. Valve’s January 10, 2024 announcement describes disclosure fields for games submitted to Steam and information shown on store pages; check Steamworks’ AI Content on Steam announcement for current policy details.
Games about artificial intelligence
These recommendations use AI as part of their fiction, rather than establishing that generative models power gameplay. The descriptions below avoid major plot spoilers.

SOMA
SOMA is science-fiction horror and exploration centered on questions of AI and transhumanism. Its fiction includes the WAU, an artificial system trying to preserve humanity. It is a strong fit if you want an unsettling, atmospheric game where the implications of artificial intelligence matter to the story, rather than a conventional action game built around AI features. Space.com’s March 1, 2026 recommendation article lists Windows, Linux, macOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and dates its release to September 22, 2015; confirm that the edition you want is currently available on your platform before buying. Space.com’s game guide.
Cyberpunk 2077
This open-world role-playing game includes AI across its setting and quests, including the Delamain taxi service and a sentient vending machine. Those are fictional characters and story elements, not evidence of generative AI running the game. Space.com’s March 2026 guide gives December 10, 2020 as the release date; check the current listing for the edition and platform you intend to play. Space.com’s game guide.

Halo
Halo is a science-fiction action series in which Cortana is Master Chief’s AI partner and a major character. It suits players looking for AI as a recurring part of a larger military science-fiction story, rather than a standalone AI simulation. Bungie and 343 Industries are both associated with the series across its history; platform availability varies by game and edition, so check the particular entry. Space.com’s game guide.
System Shock 1 and 2
These first-person immersive sims place hostile AI at the center of their conflicts: SHODAN in the original and its sequel, with the Many also central to the second game. The original games date to September 23, 1994, and August 11, 1999, respectively, according to Space.com’s March 2026 guide. Modern versions and a remake exist, but the exact editions and platforms differ; confirm which release a store listing refers to before purchase. Space.com’s game guide.

Games that use generative AI during play
These are better matches if you want AI to produce or shape content as you interact with the game. Store descriptions explain the intended mechanics, but do not by themselves establish how satisfying those mechanics are in practice.
DREAMIO: AI-Powered Adventures
DREAMIO is a choose-your-own-adventure game whose Steam description says player decisions prompt dynamically generated stories and illustrations, with synthesized narration. It supports typed, spoken, and suggested-choice interactions. The Steam page lists a March 5, 2024 release date and says cloud generation is the default, with on-device inference also supported. It describes cloud tokens beyond the amount covered by the purchase, alongside alternatives including free daily tokens, user API keys, free models, or local models. These service and model details can change; check the current Steam store page for the version and terms. The developer also says the Steam version cannot generate sexual content under platform restrictions.

- The Pictionary Vs. AI team has improved the scanning experience, making gameplay much more satisfying! New scanning system launched May 31, 2024.
- PLAYERS SKETCH AND THE AI GUESSES with this new way to play Pictionary, the classic family drawing game.
- Will the AI guess the drawing that kind of looks like a crocodile and the one that really looks like pizza? Players place a token with their predictions and win points if they guessed correctly.
- KEEP IT SIMPLE! The web app works better with simple line drawing, not super-detailed works of art. And trying to predict the unpredictable is half the fun!
- EVEN MORE FUN WHEN IT'S WRONG! This family board game pits humans and imperfect artificial intelligence against each other in the most hilarious way—by playing Pictionary!
AI Roguelite
The game’s Steam Community page describes an RPG with AI-generated entities and AI-directed mechanics; update notes also describe configurable events and scenario generation. That is a different proposition from a fixed, authored roguelike run: the advertised appeal is content and mechanics shaped by AI. The community page alone does not settle the current store state, release status, or exact version available, so verify those details before treating it as a finished, currently purchasable game. NVIDIA ACE examples: check what has actually shipped
NVIDIA describes ACE as technology for AI characters, including local inference tools for developers. Its examples span AI teammates in PUBG and NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, autonomous Smart Zoi characters in inZOI, and adaptive bosses in MIR5. NVIDIA’s developer overview also lists Dead Meat, an interrogation game described as allowing free-form questions. These are vendor descriptions, not proof that every feature is available in a current retail build.

What to verify before you buy
- Match the meaning: Decide whether you want a story about AI or content and character behavior generated during play.
- Read the exact listing: Confirm platform, edition, release state, and whether the feature is in the live game, a demo, or only announced.
- Check the processing requirements: For generative features, look for cloud connectivity, local hardware, API keys, accounts, and recurring or limited token allowances.
- Use disclosures as a clue, not a review: Steam AI disclosures and developer descriptions can identify declared uses, but do not show how prominently AI appears or whether the result is enjoyable.
