Start Here: Learn Your Weapon
There is no weapon ranking in the official starter guidance covered here. Instead of choosing by a claimed “best” option, try a weapon and learn its moves before taking it into difficult hunts.
- Visit the Training Area at Base Camp to practice with a weapon.
- Open the in-game Info tab and go to Play Guide, then Weapon Controls, to review that weapon’s moves and useful combos.
- Focus on learning one weapon at a time so you can become familiar with its controls and attacks.
These are the official learning resources described in the PlayStation starter guide; they do not establish which weapon is strongest.
#1 Best Overall
- Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
- A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
- New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
- Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
- Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
Prepare Before a Hunt
Meals can be prepared at a base or in the field with the Portable BBQ Grill. Ingredient effects, including stat boosts and passive skills, are temporary, so treat a meal as hunt preparation rather than permanent progression. A customized Radial Menu can also make commonly used items and actions easier to access.
- Cook at a base or use the Portable BBQ Grill in the field.
- Choose ingredients for the temporary effects you want for that hunt.
- Customize the Radial Menu with the items and actions you use often.
- Gather materials as you explore so you can keep useful supplies available.
Explore and Use Field Systems
Pop-up Camps let you establish base-camp options in the field as you progress, reducing the need to return to a main camp. Each site has a risk rating tied to the chance that monsters discover and destroy it; the PlayStation guide says repairs cost Guild Points.
The Slinger is useful beyond combat. The starter guide describes using it to capture endemic wildlife with the Capture Net, fire different pods, and collect nearby resources while riding. Use the Seikret to travel and manage your equipment while moving: it can carry a second weapon, which you can switch to while riding.
Rank #2
- Hunt giant nature-infused bests – Survive their attacks, learn from their behaviors, and use your Karakuri and your weapons in combination to cut these creatures down to size.
- Craft your hunting grounds – You are the only one in Azuma able to wield the Karakuri technology.
- Hunt in a pack, or be a lone wolf – In WILD HEARTS you can face the Kemono alone or unite with up to two friends (or other players) to stalk and hunt your prey.
- Gear up to hunt, hunt to gear up – Create your character, then gather materials from each hunt and build an array of armor and weapons.
Combat: Focus Mode and the Seikret
Focus Mode helps you aim attacks more precisely and highlights wounds that can be targeted with Focus Strikes. According to the PlayStation starter guide, destroying a wound can stun a monster and award bonus resources.
Recommended Free Tools
The Seikret can also help you recover while moving: the guide says hunters can sharpen or replenish health and stamina while riding. It is also possible to switch to the second weapon carried by the Seikret while mounted.
Crafting and Getting More Materials
Gathering resources helps you craft items and stay supplied. The starter guide says crafting is available from a tent or the main menu during a hunt, while stored resources can be used from a tent. Suitable item combinations can be set to auto-craft after you gather the required materials.
Rank #3
- Enter the stadium and take part of one of the biggest competitions across 34 sports: from swimming, soccer, extreme bike, weightlifting, trampoline and much more!
- Defend your own country and visit the World: United States, Australia, Japan, France…
- Train yourself alone or compete with your friends!
- An enhanced version of “30 Sport Games in 1”, with revamped design, new games and more customisation!
- Gather materials while exploring and keep track of what you need.
- Set suitable item combinations to auto-craft if you want items made when their materials are gathered.
- Use a tent when you need access to stored resources for crafting.
- After clearing an Assignment, check Optional Quests for the same monster if you want more materials and rewards.
