If your brewer or roaster gives a recipe, start there; otherwise, 55 grams of coffee per liter of water is a practical reference.
Start with a repeatable coffee-to-water ratio
A consistent dose is the easiest way to tell whether a change actually improved your coffee. The Specialty Coffee Association’s brewing protocol gives a reference ratio of 55 grams of coffee per liter of water, with a tolerance of ±10%. It is a starting point, not a rule that every brewer or drinker must follow. Use the recipe supplied with your brewer or by your roaster when available, then adjust to taste. SCA Brewing Best Practices
A kitchen scale and timer can help you repeat the same recipe, but neither needs to be specialized coffee equipment. Measure both coffee and water the same way each time. If you prefer a stronger cup, increase the coffee gradually; for a milder cup, reduce it. Keep the grind and brewing method unchanged while you test the dose.
Match the grind to your brewing method
Grind size affects how water extracts flavor from coffee, and the right setting depends on the brewer and how long water contacts the grounds. Start with the grind guidance for your machine or brewing method. If the cup tastes off, adjust the grind in small steps rather than making several changes at once. The Coffee Association of Canada’s brewing guide discusses grind and brewing method; the SCA protocol also gives contact-time ranges that vary by device and grind category.

- Stainless steel: Includes a new and improved permanent, stainless steel mesh filter that helps extract your coffee's aromatic oils and subtle flavors instead of being absorbed by a paper filter
- Coffee Carafe: Made of durable, heat-resistant borosilicate glass with Cork Band detailing that is both functional and elegant; single wall

For whole beans, a grinder that produces a consistent grind makes results easier to repeat. The Coffee Association of Canada notes that disc-style grinders are more consistent than blade-style grinders. A burr grinder is an optional upgrade if you want more control; it is not a prerequisite for a good cup. Coffee Association of Canada
Use fresh coffee and store it carefully
Buy an amount you can use soon after opening. The Coffee Association of Canada says freshness is optimized by consuming coffee within 7 to 10 days after opening, and recommends grinding just before brewing when practical. Its brewing and storage guidance

- Innovative, environmentally friendly pour over coffee maker
- High-Heat borosilicate glass carafe that won't alter or impair flavors or aromas
- Permanent stainless steel filter that reduces waste and doesn't trap coffee's essential oils
- Easy to use and easy to clean; carafe and filter are dishwasher safe
- Cork sleeve with suede cord. (not dishwasher safe)
Protect coffee from oxygen, moisture, and outside odors. The association suggests an airtight glass container in a cool, dry place. Advice varies on refrigeration and freezing, so there is no need to treat either as a universal storage rule.
Pay attention to water, filters, and temperature
Water is most of what is in the cup, so its quality matters. The Coffee Association of Canada recommends freshly drawn cold water, ideally filtered through activated carbon, and advises against artificially softened water. If your tap water has a strong taste or odor, try the recommended filtration approach and compare the result.

For professional drip machines, the association cites 200°F (about 93°C) as a brewing benchmark. The SCA protocol specifies 200°F ± 5° at coffee contact. These are reference conditions, not a reason to override your machine’s instructions: brewer design and brewing method affect the appropriate settings. The SCA protocol also gives contact-time bands that differ by device and grind category, rather than one universal brew time. Coffee Association of Canada; SCA Brewing Best Practices
With a filter brewer, check that the filter fits correctly and that the grounds are spread evenly. Water flowing around the grounds instead of through them—often called bypass—can leave coffee weak. Follow your brewer’s filter instructions and make sure the basket is seated properly.

Troubleshoot by changing one thing at a time
Before changing your recipe, check that you measured consistently and used the grind intended for your method. The same symptom can have more than one cause, so treat these as sensible starting checks rather than guaranteed fixes.
- If the coffee tastes too weak: Check the coffee dose and look for water bypassing the grounds. If those are in order, adjust the grind a little and taste again.
- If it tastes too strong: Reduce the coffee dose slightly, keeping the water and grind unchanged for that test.
- If it tastes bitter or otherwise unbalanced: Change the grind gradually and record the result. Avoid changing dose, grind, and water conditions all at once, or it becomes difficult to identify what helped.
Keeping a short note of the coffee amount, water amount, grind setting, and result is enough to make each adjustment useful. Once you like the cup, keep that recipe as your baseline.

Choose a method that fits your routine
There is no universally best brewer for a beginner. Consider how much cleanup you are willing to do, whether you want control over grind and pouring, how much coffee you make at once, and whether the method needs disposable or reusable filters. The evidence here supports general brewing guidance, not a ranking of specific machines. For training in brewing and other coffee topics, the Specialty Coffee Association lists its course offerings on its education and courses page. Its standards overview describes standards for home brewers and grinders, while noting that certification standards are members-only; it does not provide the full technical requirements publicly.
