For a damage-focused starting point in Throne and Liberty, pair Crossbow with Dagger: use the crossbow for ranged pressure and the dagger for mobility, fast attacks, and melee options. There is no single proven best setup for every activity. The available PvE and PvP builds use different stats and gear, and an early-game rotation is only a starting example—not a current-patch performance guarantee.
Why Dagger and Crossbow work together
The weapons serve complementary roles. Crossbow supplies rapid ranged attacks; Dagger adds speed, mobility, critical-oriented synergy, and a way to fight at melee distance. A community class guide describes the pairing as generally strongest at range, so treat the dagger as an additional tool rather than a reason to stay in melee continuously. Games Lantern’s Crossbow class guide explains the pairing logic.

The official Throne and Liberty gameplay overview characterizes the dagger as fast and precise, with poison blades that combine into attacks. It also explains that Weapon Mastery lets you choose nodes to alter or empower skills. Exact skill effects and useful mastery choices can change with balance updates, so check their descriptions in your current client.
Current mechanics to account for: Update 4.0.0
The official Update 4.0.0 notes list new passive mechanics for both weapons. These are patch-specific descriptions, not a promise that any particular build will deal a certain amount of damage.
#1 Best Overall
- SEVEN ARMIES DESTINED FOR BATTLE: Claim your right to the Iron Throne with one of seven Noble House armies. Each army is composed of 45 finely crafted game pieces (315 game pieces total) represented by two different sculpted designs
- Over 600 unique game pieces including armies represented by noble Houses
- 3 different ways to play: Skirmish, Dominion, World at War
- 2-7 Player | Ages 17+ | 60+ Min Play Time
- Detect Vulnerability (Dagger): after 10 Flurry hits, off-hand weapon attack chance is amplified and off-hand maximum damage increases for 3 seconds. The duration does not refresh while the effect is active.
- Storm Current (Crossbow): Crossbow and Longbow basic attacks have a 30% chance to apply Gust for 6 seconds. Hits on a Gust target deal additional damage, and the damage of the 25-stack Gust explosion is amplified.
Because the passives interact with hit counts, basic attacks, and timing, read their live descriptions and consider how your chosen skills and fight length affect them. Do not assume an older skill order or gear list accounts for Update 4.0.0.
Choose a build by activity
The community build pages separate PvE and PvP recommendations. Their different equipment and stat configurations are examples, not evidence of one universal best-in-slot setup. Start with the activity you actually play, then compare the named gear and stat priorities against your progression and the current game.
| Activity | Published example | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| PvE damage | The Games Lantern PvE build pairs Rex Chimaerus’s Crossbows with Lequirus’s Wicked Thorns and lists its own stats, skills, and equipment. A separate PvE build guide gives another allocation and gear setup. | Use the pages as alternative build references for PvE, not as a verified current best-in-slot prescription. Check their current versions and whether you can obtain and use the listed items. |
| PvP damage | The Games Lantern DPS/PvP build also lists Rex Chimaerus’s Crossbows and Lequirus’s Wicked Thorns, with its own equipment and stat split. | Treat it as a PvP-specific example. Do not transfer PvE stats or equipment to PvP without support for that choice; PvP also puts a premium on target access, survivability, and burst timing. |
These pages show that the same weapon pairing can lead to different configurations. They do not establish that the listed items are optimal for every player, patch, or stage of progression. Early-game skill and resource priorities are a separate question from gear-heavy setups.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Early-game upgrades and an example rotation
An early-game community guide recommends prioritizing the dagger defensive block and a dagger passive alongside active-skill upgrades. It identifies several dagger and crossbow actives as primary damage skills and recommends cooldown reduction to support repeated rotations. For longer fights such as dungeons or raids, the guide suggests switching Assassin’s Step to Profuse Poison. These are that guide author’s recommendations, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee of the best choices now. Read the early-game guide and verify skill names and specializations in your client.

Use it as a sequence to investigate, not a fixed rotation to copy blindly. Its current-patch applicability and performance have not been independently established here. The same guide names Predatory Strike and Brutal Incision as dagger damage abilities; confirm current names, specialization choices, cooldowns, and interactions before building a button-by-button routine around them.
How to adapt the build to your character
- Match the content: choose a PvE or PvP example first. Their stats and equipment differ, and one configuration is not automatically suitable for the other.
- Match your progression: early-game upgrade advice addresses skill and resource priorities; gear-heavy examples assume a different point in progression. Do not treat endgame equipment lists as immediate requirements.
- Plan around positioning: use crossbow pressure from range where practical. Dagger mobility and melee options give flexibility, but the pairing guide says the combination generally performs best at range.
- Consider fight length: the early-game guide’s cooldown-reduction and long-fight passive advice is contextual guidance, not a universal simulation result.
- Recheck availability and patch fit: named weapons, armor, traits, and skill interactions can vary in usefulness with your progress and game updates. Check current item and skill details before spending upgrade materials.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—show
The official Update 4.0.0 notes establish the listed passive mechanics, but they do not rank Dagger/Crossbow builds. The cited community pages provide activity-specific examples and one early-game rotation; they do not provide a population-wide performance statistic or controlled DPS comparison. There is therefore no supported percentage gain, definitive tier placement, or universal best gear set to claim.
