Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the clearest verified split-screen pick for a group: Nintendo says up to four players can race on one Switch in TV or tabletop mode. For cooperative platforming, Super Mario Bros. Wonder supports up to four local players on one console. They suit different moods, though: racing is competitive, while Wonder is built around playing together.
“Couch co-op” means playing together in the same room; it does not automatically mean split-screen. Some local multiplayer games put everyone on one shared view, while others divide the screen. Local wireless is different again: it connects multiple Switch consoles nearby. Choose based on what your group wants to play, then check the game’s local mode and controller needs before buying.
What to look for in Switch couch co-op
These terms describe different ways to play, not interchangeable features:
- Split-screen: one console displays separate views for players. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a verified example.
- Shared-screen local co-op: players use one console and share the same view. Nintendo describes Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s local course play this way; it is co-op, but not split-screen.
- Local wireless: nearby consoles connect for multiplayer. It is not the same as several players sharing one Switch.
Also consider whether you want to cooperate or compete, how many people are playing, and whether the group prefers a relaxed pace or a demanding one. A controller is needed for each player in the Nintendo-documented setups below; additional controllers may be sold separately.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: the verified split-screen choice
Nintendo UK confirms that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe supports up to four players in split-screen on one Switch in TV or tabletop mode. The same product page lists a separate local-wireless option for up to eight players; that requires nearby consoles and should not be mistaken for eight players split-screen on one console. Nintendo lists the Switch release date as 28 April 2017 and describes 48 courses and Smart Steering. Smart Steering can help newer racers stay on course, while the core experience remains competitive rather than cooperative.
For the documented offline setup, plan on one compatible controller per player. Nintendo notes that additional controllers may be sold separately. Nintendo UK’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe page has the mode and product details.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder: cooperative platforming for up to four
Nintendo’s multiplayer tips say up to three friends can join the player locally on one Switch, for four players total. The group plays courses together; Nintendo’s description does not call this split-screen. Each player needs their own controller. One helpful recovery mechanic is that a defeated player can return when another local player touches them as a ghost.
This is the shortlist’s family-friendly cooperative platformer: players tackle the course together rather than race each other. See Play Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder multiplayer tips for Nintendo’s guidance.

Luigi’s Mansion 3: teamwork through the campaign
GamesRadar’s local-multiplayer guide describes the main campaign as a two-player mode, with one player controlling Luigi and the other Gooigi. Their distinct abilities make the pairing a teamwork option for players who want a story-led adventure rather than a quick competitive match. GamesRadar also describes ScreamPark as local party play for up to eight.
Those mode and player-count details come from editorial coverage, not the official Nintendo listing. Check the listing for the edition you plan to buy before relying on a specific mode or group limit. GamesRadar’s local multiplayer guide covers its recommendation.

Overcooked! 2: timed kitchen teamwork
Overcooked! 2 is a fit for groups that enjoy quick communication and a little chaos: GamesRadar characterizes it as cooperative cooking built around preparing orders under time pressure. That pace can be exciting for a group that likes coordination, but it is not the relaxed option on this list. Nintendo Life also recommends Overcooked titles in its couch co-op coverage.
The cited coverage does not establish the exact local player limit for the edition you may buy. Check the Switch store listing for that edition’s local modes and group size. GamesRadar’s local multiplayer guide and Nintendo Life’s couch co-op guide provide editorial recommendations.

- For other two-player options: GamesRadar’s guide includes Yoshi’s Crafted World and It Takes Two. Its characterization of It Takes Two is a two-player teamwork game.
- For a larger-group social game: GamesRadar includes Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Among Us; confirm the specific local setup before treating either as couch co-op.

Quick Recap
How to choose before you buy
- Decide on the experience: choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for competitive split-screen, Wonder for cooperative platforming, Luigi’s Mansion 3 for campaign teamwork, or Overcooked! 2 for timed coordination.
- Check the player setup: confirm whether the game supports one-console local play or requires local wireless across multiple consoles. Do not treat the two as the same feature.
- Verify the edition’s details: check the official Switch listing for its local mode, player count, and controller requirements. Editorial lists are useful starting points, not official specifications.
- Count controllers: for Nintendo’s documented Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Wonder setups, plan on one compatible controller per player.
