Choose Hollow Knight: Silksong for a demanding Metroidvania
Hollow Knight: Silksong emphasizes exploration, precise movement, and combat that can be punishing. Metacritic’s description notes that it is more difficult than its predecessor. If you want a guided route, forgiving fights, or a relaxed pace, this may not be the right starting point; if learning a challenging world is part of the appeal, it belongs on your shortlist.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is the counterpoint to the shorter-loop action picks: a grounded open-world RPG built around an immersive, believable world and demanding systems. Is a remaster or PC port one of the best solo games of 2025?
The Last of Us Part II Remastered appears in Metacritic’s 2025 PC list, but it is a remaster/PC release, not a 2025 original game. It is a reasonable option if you are specifically seeking a cinematic, story-focused action game and are considering the PC version. Check the current store listing for the edition, purchase format, and availability in your region before buying.

Lists that look similar can answer different questions. Metacritic aggregates reviews and ranks eligible Windows releases for the calendar year; a title can qualify for a 2025 PC list even if it launched on another platform earlier. PC Gamer’s awards use team nominations and discussion, while its review-score coverage reflects individual reviewers’ judgments. GameSpot’s PC list considers what makes a game notable on PC, including visuals, keyboard-and-mouse input, or mod support; it is not limited to solo-only releases. The shortlist here retains games suited to the single-player question rather than treating every PC recommendation as a solo game.

There is also a scale problem: SteamDB reports 16,235 releases with the Singleplayer tag in 2025 on its page accessed in 2026. That is a tag-based count of Steam releases—not an independently verified count of strictly solo-only games, and not a measure of how many are worth playing. It helps explain why a curated set is more useful than a claim to have identified every worthwhile release.
One more solo recommendation: Skin Deep
For players who want an immersive sim with a comic streak, Skin Deep is a further option beyond the five-game shortlist. PC Gamer senior editor Wes Fenlon wrote in PC Gamer’s Game of the Year Awards 2025: “Play it even if you don’t think you like stealth games: the comedy is a perfect gateway drug for appreciating the deep interactions between every single object aboard these calamitous space sandboxes.” That is Fenlon’s editorial recommendation, not a promise that every player will enjoy the game.
