The best Nintendo Switch game for an adult depends on what you want to play: open-ended exploration, tactical combat, a long role-playing story, or a quick multiplayer session. This guide separates games with adult appeal from games with mature-rated content; the two are not the same. These recommendations are for the original Nintendo Switch library, with Switch 2 editions noted where relevant.
How to choose a Switch game as an adult
Start with the experience you want, not the age label. A thoughtful adventure or a welcoming multiplayer game can suit adult players without mature content. If you specifically want an age-restricted game, check the rating and content information for your region before buying.
- Genre and tone: Choose exploration, strategy, racing, science fiction, or role-playing according to your mood.
- How you will play: Decide whether you want a solo campaign, local multiplayer, or online play; confirm the exact game’s multiplayer options in its listing.
- Complexity and commitment: A long-form RPG asks for a different kind of attention than a race you can play with a group.
- Content: Mature themes and age ratings are separate from whether a game is sophisticated or enjoyable for adults.
This is a cross-genre shortlist, not a head-to-head test or a universal ranking. The descriptions below reflect the cited outlets’ editorial assessments.
Best Nintendo Switch games for adults, by preference
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — best for open-ended exploration
Choose Breath of the Wild if discovery is the point: it gives you a broad Hyrule to explore and rewards curiosity. Nintendo Life ranked it first in its 2026 Switch list, while GameSpot also describes it as an enduring recommendation. Its appeal is not age-restricted content; it is the freedom to decide where to go and what to investigate. Nintendo lists a separate Switch 2 edition as well as the original Switch game, so check the platform and edition on the US store listing before purchase.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — best for experimenting with systems
Tears of the Kingdom builds on Breath of the Wild‘s world and ideas, adding tools and abilities that support inventive approaches to challenges. GameSpot calls it a bigger, more ambitious sequel; TechRadar highlights its creative possibilities. It is a strong fit if you want more systems to experiment with, but it is not a wholly separate style of experience from its predecessor. Nintendo also lists a Switch 2 edition; confirm that you are buying the original Switch version or the intended Switch 2 edition on the US store listing.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — best for accessible group play
For a game that can bring players with different skill levels together, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the straightforward pick. The Guardian highlights its 48 circuits and multiplayer appeal. That makes it more suitable for a shared session than a recommendation built around a long solo campaign. Nintendo Life reported that it had sold 70.59 million copies as of December 2025, making it the best-selling Nintendo game on Switch in that outlet’s figures; sales indicate popularity, not adult preference or quality.

Metroid Prime Remastered — best for atmospheric solo science fiction
Metroid Prime Remastered takes you through the alien environments of Tallon IV, mixing exploration and combat with a tense atmosphere, according to The Guardian. Its first-person structure gives it a markedly different feel from colorful platforming or group racing. Pick it for focused solo exploration and science-fiction mood rather than social play.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition — best for a mature, expansive RPG
If by “for adults” you mean mature content as well as a substantial role-playing adventure, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition is the clearest fit on this list. Nintendo Life describes it as an impactful RPG and notes that Switch performance is imperfect. Check your region’s age rating and content details before choosing it; “adult” in the title of a guide does not itself establish a game’s suitability.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom — best for puzzle-led adventure
Echoes of Wisdom gives Zelda the leading role and centers its play on using a wand to summon objects and enemies for puzzles and combat, as GameSpot describes. TechRadar praises the distinct mechanics but identifies performance and repetitive combat as possible drawbacks. Consider it if you want a different puzzle-and-adventure structure, rather than another open-world game.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope — best for tactical strategy
For turn-based strategy outside the familiar Nintendo action-adventure mold, GameSpot points to Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, citing changes to the formula and improved pacing. It suits players who want to think through tactical encounters. The cited guide does not establish its multiplayer options or a time commitment, so check the current game listing if either is decisive for you.

DOOM — best for a mature-rated first-person shooter
DOOM is the shortlist’s other explicit mature-content choice. Nintendo Life includes the Switch release in its adult-focused game guide and gives favorable review commentary. The specific rating and content descriptors depend on region, so consult the local rating information before buying rather than treating the title or this guide as a rating.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Switch or Switch 2: check the edition before buying
Nintendo’s US storefront lists both original Switch and Switch 2 content, including separate Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The original Switch editions remain distinct listings; a Switch 2 upgrade is not a reason to assume that an original Switch copy cannot be played as that edition. Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 investor-relations release schedule notes that owners of some original Switch versions can purchase upgrade packs for Switch 2 editions and that release dates may differ by region. Those notes are not a universal upgrade rule: check the exact game’s platform, edition, region, and upgrade terms in the Nintendo release schedule and the relevant store listing.
