Which Automations Are Worth Using in Europa Universalis V?

EU5’s default trade automation suits routine campaigns; use Trade Orders to enforce a priority and manual control when trade is central to your strategy.

For most Europa Universalis V campaigns, leave trade automation on and intervene with Trade Orders when you have a specific priority, such as meeting construction demand or protecting a key import. Take full manual control only when trade itself is central to your strategy. The useful choice is not simply “automation on or off”: EU5’s trade design offers a middle ground between letting the AI handle everything and managing every market yourself.

What automation does in EU5

Europa Universalis V is Paradox Interactive’s PC grand-strategy game, released on 4 November 2025. Its simulation connects populations, goods and production with estates, diplomacy, military organization and logistics. That means decisions that seem routine can still matter when they affect a campaign’s supply or strategic goals.

For trade, Paradox Tinto’s 2026 description of the 1.4 redesign says trade is automated by default in all markets. Trade Orders add instructions above that baseline rather than requiring you to micromanage every transaction. The developer describes this as an involvement ladder: leave trade alone, set a few priorities while automation handles the rest, or take direct control of market trade.

Which trade automation level should you use?

Approach Best fit Strategic risk Reversibility and information Attention saved
Default trade automation Campaigns focused on war, diplomacy, exploration or domestic politics, where trade is not the main objective. Less direct control over whether trade serves a particular strategic goal. You can decide to add instructions or take control when your priorities change. The available information about how the automation weighs a specific hidden objective or timing window is not established here. High: the AI handles routine market trade.
Trade Orders plus automation Campaigns with a small number of clear priorities, such as meeting construction needs or reserving capacity for a valuable good. Orders express a priority, but they do not remove the need to choose one that fits your plan. Orders can be changed; they guide a priority queue rather than replacing the underlying automation. High for routine work, with some attention spent setting and reviewing priorities.
Direct manual control Campaigns where market access, a particular import or export profitability is a defining objective. You assume responsibility for managing the trade choices that automation would otherwise handle. Useful when your own strategic context matters more than a general instruction; the cost of undoing individual decisions is not specified in the developer description. Lowest: more direct involvement is required.

The risk, reversibility, information and attention columns are a practical way to judge automation, not a developer-published ranking of EU5 systems.

When to leave trade automation on

Keep the default on when trade is supporting the campaign rather than defining it. If your attention is on a war, diplomatic commitments, exploration or domestic politics, the default saves you from handling routine market activity. You do not have to choose between ignoring trade completely and controlling every transaction: you can add an order for a pressing need and let automation do the remaining work.

That is also the sensible starting point if you are new to the game. Begin with the default, then intervene when you can name the outcome you want. A specific order is more useful than taking over every market without a clear reason.

When to use Trade Orders

Use an order when the AI should keep trading but you need a particular result to take precedence. In the 1.4 design described by Paradox Tinto, orders form a priority queue. The orders at the top receive Trade Capacity first; any capacity they do not use flows down to lower orders and then to regular automation. An order can reserve a flat amount or a percentage of market Trade Capacity.

Meet a population need

The “Any Pop need” preset targets goods missing from a market’s population. Use it when supplying population demand is the specific problem you want trade to address, rather than relying on a broad instruction to pursue profitable activity.

Support construction

The “Any construction need” preset targets goods required by construction. It suits a campaign where building is the immediate priority and shortages are holding that work back.

Seek profitable exports

The “Any Export” preset seeks the most profitable available exports. It is a goal-oriented instruction, not a guarantee that every export will meet a profit level you would personally accept.

Combine priorities in order

Paradox Tinto’s example puts construction shortages first, reserves 20 Trade Capacity for Gold, then exports Cloth and Fine Cloth subject to a minimum profit. The example illustrates the point of the queue: give the most important need first claim on capacity, protect a specific allocation, and leave remaining capacity to lower-priority instructions. It is an example, not a universal order for every campaign.

When to take manual control

Override automation when the market itself is part of your campaign plan: for example, when a specific import, export profitability or market access matters enough that a general instruction is insufficient. Paradox Tinto contrasts a tall Holland campaign, where trade may deserve close attention, with a wide Horde campaign, where it may not. Those are illustrations of how campaign focus changes the value of micromanagement, not a rule that every country in either category should use one setting.

If you cannot identify a strategic objective that manual control would serve, the extra attention is unlikely to be worthwhile. Keep the routine work automated and add only the constraints you actually need.

How to judge other automations

EU5’s documented systems include populations, estates, diplomacy, production, military organization and logistics. However, the available developer material establishes the trade controls described above; it does not provide a universal ranking of other automations or enough detail to recommend an on/off setting for each one. Avoid assuming that an automation that is convenient in one system is equally safe in another.

For any automated decision, ask four questions:

  • Strategic risk: Could a poor choice undermine a war plan, estate balance, diplomatic commitment or population supply?
  • Reversibility: Can you inspect and undo the action without a substantial cost?
  • Information quality: Does the AI have the context you have about your objective or timing?
  • Attention saved: How much repetitive work does automation remove?

Automation is most attractive when it saves substantial attention, the consequences of a mistake are limited, and you can readily inspect or correct the result. If an action could damage a core objective and depends on context the AI may not share, review it closely or retain direct control. This is a decision framework inferred from EU5’s documented systems and the Trade Orders design, not a claim about the behavior of every automation in the game.

How to rein in trade automation when it misses your goal

  1. Name the unmet priority. Decide whether the problem is a population shortage, a construction requirement, the use of Trade Capacity for a particular good, or an export-profit threshold.
  2. Add a matching Trade Order. Use the documented preset that fits the need, or specify the relevant good and constraint where appropriate.
  3. Put the important order higher in the queue. Higher orders receive Trade Capacity before lower orders and regular automation.
  4. Choose a flat amount or percentage allocation if needed. The 1.4 design supports both ways of setting an order’s Trade Capacity.
  5. Review whether the goal still matters. If priorities change, revise the instructions; if a market becomes central to your campaign, consider direct control instead of expecting general automation to infer the new objective.

Paradox Tinto’s UX designer Jorge described the redesign’s aim as letting players focus on their goals while the AI handles busy work. Trade Orders are the practical expression of that division: make the strategic intent explicit, then delegate the routine execution.
