Black Myth: Wukong stands out through its Journey to the West mythology, staff-centered combat and flexible supernatural abilities. It borrows the challenge and some conventions of Soulslikes, but its defense is built around dodging rather than blocking or parrying. That makes it a useful comparison point for games such as Bloodborne and Sekiro, not a one-to-one match for either.
What makes Black Myth: Wukong unique?
Its identity comes from several elements working together: a specific Chinese literary and mythological setting, a staff-first combat system, spells and transformations that can be mixed into a build, and boss encounters tied to the histories of the characters involved.

The official PlayStation description calls the game an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West, the 16th-century classic. The player takes the role of the Destined One, travels westward, fights powerful foes and investigates an obscured truth. That foundation gives the adventure a different cultural and narrative frame from the gothic or medieval fantasy settings commonly associated with Soulslike comparisons.
Is Black Myth: Wukong a Soulslike?
It has Soulslike elements, but the label does not explain its whole design. Xbox Wire describes it as drawing on Soulslikes, RPGs and boss-rush games. Its guide also reports shrines where the Destined One can resurrect, with enemies respawning after a rest. Those conventions create familiar pressure around exploration and encounters.

At the same time, the game uses its own combat priorities and mixes in action-RPG abilities and boss-focused progression. Calling it a Soulslike is a useful shorthand for some of its challenge and checkpoint conventions, not a complete description of how it plays.
How does combat differ from Bloodborne and Sekiro?
The clearest supported distinction is defensive: Xbox Wire says the Destined One has no block or parry abilities. Survival instead depends on movement, sprinting and dodge timing. A well-timed Perfect Dodge restores some Focus, which can then support heavy attacks.

That makes Wukong distinct from a comparison centered on parries, but it does not establish a full mechanics-by-mechanics contrast with either Bloodborne or Sekiro. The useful comparison is narrower: Wukong places the staff and dodge-based defense at the center of its combat, while the three games have different settings and combat identities.
What is distinctive about Wukong’s combat toolkit?
The staff is the core weapon, and Xbox Wire names three stances: Smash, Thrust and Pillar. Rather than defining combat only through weapon attacks, the game lets players combine staff techniques with spells, abilities, weapons and equipment. PlayStation’s description explicitly presents that mix-and-match approach as a way to find strategies suited to different play styles.

- Hit Everything 2.0 gives your teammates greater situational awareness, allowing them to push the pile and gain ground to attack the football more effectively.
Other tools broaden the options:
- Transformations: Change form as part of the supernatural combat vocabulary.
- Spells and magic vessels: Add abilities beyond the staff’s direct attacks.
- Spirits: Xbox Wire reports that spirits from Yaoguai Chiefs can be summoned.
- Focus: Perfect Dodges restore some Focus, which can be spent on heavy attacks.
The result is not simply a choice between different weapons: staff stance, timing and supernatural abilities can all contribute to a fight.
Are the bosses only combat challenges?
No. PlayStation’s product description emphasizes that many foes and other characters have origins, personalities and motivations to uncover. Their stories place fights within a wider tapestry, alongside the Destined One’s effort to understand the truth behind the journey.

Exploration also has secrets beyond the main route. Xbox Wire describes Meditation Spots that grant a Spark, as well as a sequence of three bells that opens a hidden area and the Fireproof Mantle. These examples show how optional discoveries can connect exploration to rewards and additional encounters.

The available official descriptions and guide support a single-player, chapter-like adventure with shrines, hidden paths, meditation spots and boss encounters. They do not establish that the game is a fully open world, so it is more accurate to describe it through those confirmed structural elements than to apply an open-world label.
