Mario Kart World has 40 distinct selectable race courses as of version 1.8.0, released September 9, 2026: 30 main courses and 10 added SNES courses. This count treats named courses as tracks and excludes connecting roads, Grand Prix travel between course areas, and Knockout Tour routes.
How the 40-course count is calculated
Nintendo’s version 1.8.0 notes document 10 SNES courses newly selectable in several modes. A course guide identifies 30 distinct main courses in the launch game, giving a total of 40 when those additions are counted with the launch lineup. Nintendo does not state the resulting total of 40 in one figure, so it is best understood as a count of named, selectable courses based on those two sources. Why some track counts look different
Mario Kart World connects its courses across a shared map. Race legs may include travel between named course areas, while Knockout Tour strings regions into a continuous route. These connections and route formats are not additional named courses, which is why a count based on everything a race travels through can differ from the 40-course total.
Nintendo producer Kosuke Yabuki explained the design: “Up to the previous game, we created each course separately as an independent element, but this time, we ended up with a map like this because all the courses are connected as part of the same world.” Nintendo’s Ask the Developer interview

New Knockout Tour routes are separate from the course total
Version 1.8.0 also added two Knockout Tour routes: Propeller Rally, connecting Acorn Heights and Airship Fortress, and Turnip Rally, connecting DK Pass and Shy Guy Bazaar. These are routes, not additional named courses in the 40-course count. Nintendo’s update announcement
