Once Human’s Memetics system is now called Tech. The official Version 2.3.1 update renamed the system and its related terms in January 2026, so current menus may use labels such as Tech Points and Tech Specialization instead. This guide uses the current branch names and is checked against information available October 7, 2026.
What are Memetics in Once Human, and why does the menu say Tech?
Memetics is the former name for Once Human’s progression system for unlocking capabilities and options tied to activities such as gathering, crafting, managing your territory, and building. On January 21, 2026, the official Version 2.3.1 announcement said, “We have unified ‘Memetics’-related concepts under the ‘Tech’ framework.” The update’s terminology map is:
| Former name | Current name |
|---|---|
| Memetics | Tech |
| Cipher | Tech Points |
| Memetic Specialization | Tech Specialization |
| Specialization Memory Fragments | Targeted Tech Specialization |
| Specialization Memory Cleanser | Specialization Reset Agent |
The four former Memetics branches also received current labels: Tech – Gathering, Tech – Crafting, Tech – Management, and Tech – Building. These are the names to look for in the current framework; older guides may use different branch labels. Once Human Version 2.3.1 announcement, January 21, 2026.
Where can I find the full Memetics—or Tech—list?
For a searchable third-party catalog, Once Human Database lists 879 nodes across Gathering, Crafting, Management, and Building. That number is the database’s catalog count, not an official game statistic, and the listing can change as the database is updated. Its page provides category and tier filters for narrowing the list. Use the category filter to focus on the activity you care about, then use the tier filter to browse the catalog in progression order. Treat the catalog as a reference for finding nodes, not as proof that every player should unlock the same sequence: the right choices depend on what you are doing in your current scenario.
Which Tech branch should you focus on?
There is no universally best branch or point-spending plan established for every player. A practical starting point is to match your next unlocks to the activity you expect to spend time on, then account for what the current scenario allows and what you need to unlock first. The branches indicate the broad focus of their options:
Rank #2

- Tech – Crafting: Prioritize this when you need crafting-related unlocks for your current plans.
- Tech – Management: Explore this for options associated with managing your territory and operations.
- Tech – Building: Focus here when your near-term goal is constructing or improving your base.
Before committing points, consider the tier and prerequisites shown for a node, whether it helps with your immediate goal, and how long you expect that goal to matter. A choice that is useful for a current scenario may not carry over as progression when you move to another one. The branch-level descriptions above are a planning framework, not a claim that a particular node or route is optimal for every character.

Once Human’s official scenarios overview explains that scenarios can have different rules and objectives, and that character leveling and Memetics are part of the scenario experience and reset according to scenario rules. In current terminology, that means you should treat Tech progression as scenario-bound rather than assume that your allocation will carry into the next scenario.
Not every kind of progress is described as resetting in the same way. The official overview says weapon and armor blueprints persist, while some items associated with scenarios and Memetic Specializations do not transfer. The overview was published August 13, 2024; check the rules displayed for the specific scenario you are entering, since the exact treatment can vary. Once Human scenarios overview, August 13, 2024.
Use the current scenario rules to plan
Before spending time around a long-term plan, distinguish scenario-bound progression from retained assets. The official overview identifies leveling and Memetics as scenario-related, but identifies blueprints as an example of progress that persists. It also notes that scenarios can differ in rules, objectives, environments, maps, enemies, and player scales. Do not assume a rule from one scenario applies identically to another.
