ARC Raiders has a real shot at welcoming players who are curious about extraction games but wary of losing everything—but it is still a PvPvE extraction shooter, not a co-op adventure with the tension removed. Its appeal comes from balancing fights against imposing machines, unpredictable human Raiders, and the temptation to stay topside for one more haul. That mix can make each run feel like an expedition. Whether it works for you depends on how you feel about risking gear, sharing a map with strangers, and a live service that must keep improving after launch.
What is ARC Raiders?
Embark Studios describes ARC Raiders as a multiplayer extraction adventure set on a future Earth ravaged by a mechanized threat called ARC. Players prepare in the underground settlement of Speranza, then head to the surface to scavenge, fight, and try to escape with valuable loot. The game frames that loop as a meeting of extraction-shooter tension and action-adventure atmosphere; that is the studio’s ambition, not a guarantee that every player will find it accessible.
Before a raid, players can craft, repair, and upgrade gear. A successful extraction brings loot back to sell or use in crafting better equipment. On the surface, machines and other Raiders can disrupt any plan, and the store description allows players to go alone or in parties of up to three. Steam’s overview lists four maps at launch and variable map conditions, but that launch-era count should not be read as the game’s current map total.
How does the risk-and-reward loop work?
The central choice is how much longer to remain in a raid. More time topside can mean more loot and a better haul, but it also creates more opportunities for ARC machines or rival Raiders to end the run before you extract. The surface is not simply a sequence of fights: exploration and scavenging are part of the draw, while the threat of losing a run gives ordinary decisions weight.

That structure makes extraction the payoff rather than merely the end of a match. You bring recovered items into the next preparation phase, where they can support crafting, repairs, upgrades, or sales. The available evidence describes the broad loop, but not a full current inventory of which items are lost, retained, or protected after every type of failure. It would be misleading to promise that a failed run costs nothing.
Is ARC Raiders PvE or PvP?
It is PvPvE: both ARC machines and other human-controlled Raiders are threats. The machines provide pressure even when no other players are visible, while encounters with Raiders add uncertainty because another player may avoid you, cooperate, or attack. Xbox Wire says the project evolved from a co-op-only concept into PvPvE extraction, so a purely cooperative experience is not what the released design offers.
That combination is central to the game’s appeal and its friction. Machine encounters can make the world feel hostile and give players a shared problem; human encounters mean no route or objective is completely predictable. If you want a strictly PvE outing without the possibility of hostile players, ARC Raiders is not that game.

What happens if you fail to extract?
Failure does not necessarily make a raid a total loss. In its review, PC Gamer described ARC Raiders as comparatively forgiving, noting that a failed extraction still earns XP toward skills and some resources. That helps soften the sting of a bad run and leaves some progression value behind.

That is one critic’s account, not a complete specification of current loss and retention rules. The review does not establish exactly which carried gear or loot survives each failure, and those details should be checked against the game’s current mechanics rather than inferred from retained XP or resources. Expect extraction to matter: the risk of not making it out is part of the loop.
Can you play solo, and is it welcoming to newcomers?
Yes. The store description says you can enter solo or in a party of up to three. That gives newcomers a way to learn at their own pace, while a group offers company and more options when a raid becomes dangerous. Solo availability does not mean solo play removes PvP risk or makes the surface safe.

For someone new to extraction shooters, the strongest case is the adventure framing, the machine threats, and the fact that a failed extraction can still advance skills and provide some resources, according to PC Gamer. The main hurdle remains understanding what to risk and when to leave, while accounting for other players whose intentions are unknown. The evidence available here does not establish how readable every system is for a first-time player, so it is better to describe the game as potentially inviting than to call it effortless or categorically easier than other extraction games.
Does ARC Raiders deliver on the mainstream promise?
It broadens the pitch by giving extraction its own setting and exploratory atmosphere, rather than presenting every raid only as a contest over other players’ gear. Its machines, scavenging, crafting, and progression offer several reasons to go topside. But the defining compromises remain: gear is at risk, extraction can fail, and hostile Raiders are part of the design.

Can players rely on the live service?
Like any ongoing multiplayer game, ARC Raiders’ appeal depends partly on how well its developer handles new content, maintenance, fairness, and cheating. A launch-era review cannot establish the game’s state in October 2026, and player sentiment or available features can change.
In a 2026 report, GamesRadar said Embark had scheduled a “Frozen Trail” update for October 8, alongside a free trial running October 8–12 on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox. Reported additions included a snowy Italian map called Pendola Pass, new enemies and weapons, traversal and utility gear, weapon modifications, transmog, customizable bases, quests, trials, and a battle pass. Those dates were still in the future when the report appeared on October 4, 2026, so this is a preview of what was announced, not confirmation that the trial or features are available now. Check GamesRadar’s ARC Raiders coverage and Embark’s current announcements for updated availability. The report also said new players could access Pendola Pass immediately if teamed with someone who had unlocked it; that detail is subject to change.
Cheating and matchmaking fairness
GamesRadar reported that executive producer Aleksander Grøndal said permanent bans were standard for known cheat programs and that accounts caught cheating would be permanently banned, without warnings or second chances. That is the studio’s stated policy, not an independently audited account of enforcement.

Grøndal also reported that matchmaking changes aimed at queue teaming led to 85% fewer players engaging in that behavior within five days; he said spoiled raids fell from around one in 50 to one in 300, with no meaningful effect on queue times. These are Embark’s reported results, not independently measured figures. They indicate the studio has addressed a specific fairness problem, but do not prove cheating or matchmaking concerns are permanently solved.
Content cadence and maintenance
PC Gamer’s report on a Game Developer interview said Grøndal described the difficulty of transitioning to a live service. It also reported that the team struggled to keep pace with content and maintenance demands, with periods of stale content and player decline. That is a meaningful caution for anyone choosing a game partly on the promise of ongoing updates: announced features matter, but so does the developer’s ability to support them consistently.
Who should try ARC Raiders?
ARC Raiders is most compelling if you want exploration and machine combat alongside the uncertainty of extraction, and you can accept that other players may turn a promising run into a failed one. Its partial progression on failure, as described by PC Gamer, may make the genre’s risks feel less punishing than an all-or-nothing loop, though it does not erase the stakes.
Quick Recap
- Consider it if: you enjoy scavenging, gearing up between raids, and deciding when a haul is worth the risk.
- Think twice if: you want a guaranteed co-op PvE experience, dislike losing the chance to bring loot home, or expect a live service to maintain a steady cadence without rough patches.
- For a first run: start solo if you want to learn without coordinating a group, or team up if you would rather face the surface with others. Neither choice removes the possibility of encountering hostile Raiders.
