The original launch guide covered eight; Scholar and Undertaker arrived with the Forsaken Hollows DLC. Each character has a passive ability, a character skill, and an Ultimate Art, so the best fit depends on how you want to fight and support a team—not on an official tier ranking.
Who are all the characters in Elden Ring Nightreign?
Bandai Namco’s current character gallery lists 10 Nightfarers. The publisher’s launch-era guide describes eight, while its December 11, 2025 article introduces Scholar and Undertaker as additions associated with Forsaken Hollows. The launch count is historical, not the current roster.

Nightreign is built around expeditions with exploration days, night boss encounters, and a final Nightlord battle. Characters can be used in solo play or teams of three. Their abilities can complement one another, making it useful to consider range, survival, setup, and team utility together.
What are each Nightfarer’s abilities?
Every Nightfarer has three ability slots: a passive, a character skill, and an Ultimate Art. The descriptions below explain what each ability does and the kind of play it encourages; they are not patch-specific damage rankings.

- Elden Ring: Nightreign - Seekers Edition /PS5
Wylder: flexible melee and repositioning
- Passive — Sixth Sense: Cheats death once.
- Character Skill — Claw Shot: Fires a grappling claw to pull foes in, or retracts it to move quickly.
- Ultimate Art — Onslaught Stake: Launches an iron stake in a powerful attack followed by a large explosion.
Wylder is a flexible starting point for close-range combat: Claw Shot can initiate an engagement or help reposition, while Sixth Sense offers a one-use survival safeguard. Bandai Namco’s Wylder profile lists the abilities.
Guardian: guarding and team protection
- Passive — Steel Guard: Braces behind the shield with feet planted for a stronger guard.
- Character Skill — Whirlwind: Beats a wing to create a wind-churning cyclone.
- Ultimate Art — Wings of Salvation: Leaps and dives to create a protective area.
Guardian’s official ability descriptions emphasize defense and protection. That makes the character a natural fit for players who want to hold ground and help protect nearby allies, rather than judging the kit only by damage output. See the official Guardian profile.
Ironeye: ranged pressure and weak-point setup
- Passive — Eagle Eye: Finds more items to obtain from foes.
- Character Skill — Marking: Cuts a foe with a dagger to create a temporary weak point.
- Ultimate Art — Single Shot: Fires a powerful arrow that surpasses sound and ignores defense.
Ironeye combines ranged attacks with a mark that can set up damage against a target. The temporary weak point makes Marking relevant to allies as well as Ironeye. The publisher describes Single Shot’s effects but does not provide a measured accuracy rate. Details are on the official Ironeye profile.
Duchess: evasion, repeated damage, and concealment
- Passive — Magnificent Poise: Supports optimal attacks and repeated dodging.
- Character Skill — Restage: Replays recent occurrences to damage nearby foes.
- Ultimate Art — Finale: Obscures Duchess and nearby allies from foes.
Duchess’s quick, evasive style pairs with Restage’s repeated damage. Finale can provide cover for repositioning or create space for nearby allies. The launch description also characterizes Duchess as fleet-footed and says she uses less stamina for attacks and dodges. See the official Duchess profile.
Recluse: affinity-based spellcasting
- Passive — Elemental Defense: Finds affinity residues that can be collected to replenish FP.
- Character Skill — Magic Cocktail: Gathers target affinity residues to fire a magic cocktail that exploits affinity.
- Ultimate Art — Soulblood Song: Brands nearby foes with blood sigils.
Recluse rewards attention to elemental affinities and residue collection. The publisher’s launch overview says allies can recover health and magic by attacking foes branded by Soulblood Song. See the official Recluse profile.
Raider: heavy melee and retaliation
- Passive — Fighter’s Resolve: Taking damage boosts Retaliate’s potency; Raider cannot be knocked down while using it.
- Character Skill — Retaliate: Enters an attack stance, reduces incoming damage, and pummels. An enhanced version can make even larger enemies recoil.
- Ultimate Art — Totem Stela: Drives a gravekeeper’s wedge into the earth to summon a giant tombstone.
Raider is a close-range fighter built to withstand pressure and answer it. The publisher describes Totem Stela’s tombstone as an attack, a barrier, and a source of an aura that strengthens allies. See the official Raider profile.
Executor: deflection and beast transformation
- Passive — Tenacity: Recovering from status ailments boosts attack and stamina recovery speed.
- Character Skill — Cursed Sword: Draws a cursed sword that can deflect attacks. Repeated deflections reveal the blade for powerful attacks. Running is unavailable while holding the enchanted blade ready.
- Ultimate Art — Aspects of the Crucible: Beast: Transforms Executor into a primordial beast with unique attacks that drain the Ultimate Art gauge. Activate the art again to end the transformation quickly.
Executor’s deflections make timing and enemy knowledge central to the kit; holding the sword ready also limits movement. The transformation’s attacks consume the Ultimate Art gauge, so it is not a cost-free mode. The official Executor profile gives the ability details.
Revenant: summons and rescue support
- Passive — Necromancy: Raises temporary enemy ghosts to fight as allies. Holding the summon command detonates corpses.
- Character Skill — Summon Spirit: Plays a lyre to summon one of three family members: Helen, Frederick, or Sebastian.
- Ultimate Art — Immortal March: Makes Revenant and nearby allies immortal, revives allies in the near-death state, and turns her family into immortal warriors.
Revenant combines temporary summons with one of the roster’s clearest team-rescue tools. Her support value depends on managing summons and using Immortal March when allies need its protection or revival. See the official Revenant profile.

Scholar: consumables and battlefield analysis
- Passive — Bagcraft: Carries more items and levels item categories independently as they are used. Level two strengthens effects; level three adds a bonus effect.
- Character Skill — Analyse: Observes a target through a monocle. Continued observation advances Analysis; progress improves by observing more enemy specimens, finding special notes, and including allies.
- Ultimate Art — Communion: Threads enemies together to share damage between them and can heal threaded allies. An attack from a threaded enemy can also damage its attacker.
Scholar’s utility grows from item use, observation, and linking targets or allies. That setup makes awareness and positioning important to the payoff. Bandai Namco’s December 11, 2025 DLC article describes Scholar as arcane-focused and recommends mid-range positioning.
Undertaker: aggressive front-line pressure
- Passive — Confluence: A nearby ally’s Ultimate Art can enable Undertaker to activate hers regardless of gauge; certain darkness-infused enemy attacks can also supply power.
- Character Skill — Trance: Increases agility and builds attack power through consecutive hits. Using up the Ultimate Art gauge can activate an additional Loathsome Hex.
- Ultimate Art — Loathsome Hex: Draws out an uncanny bone, rapidly closes on a target, and strikes, including through airborne movement.
Undertaker’s mobility and pressure are tied to opportunities created by allies, certain enemy attacks, and sustained hits. The publisher’s DLC profile says her strengths combine physical power and faith-based incantations. See the official Undertaker profile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Nightfarer should I play?
Choose by preferred distance and the kind of contribution you want to make, then account for how much setup the kit asks of you. The table summarizes the official ability descriptions and publisher role labels; it is not a ranking of character strength.
| Nightfarer | Broad role or range | Distinctive contribution | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wylder | Flexible melee | Grapple-based engage or reposition; one-use death prevention | Direct, adaptable close-range play |
| Guardian | Defensive melee | Stronger guarding and a protective area | Prioritizes holding ground and team protection |
| Ironeye | Ranged | Temporary weak-point setup and a powerful arrow | Mark a target and contribute from distance |
| Duchess | Ranged/spells in the launch guide; evasive attacks | Repeated damage and concealment for nearby allies | Rewards movement and timing Restage |
| Recluse | Spells | Affinity-based casting; branded foes can aid allies | Requires attention to residues and affinities |
| Raider | Heavy melee | Damage-reducing retaliation and an allied-strengthening tombstone aura | Built around close-range pressure and counterattacks |
| Executor | Melee | Deflection into powerful attacks; beast transformation | Requires timing; sword-ready movement and gauge use matter |
| Revenant | Summons | Temporary fighters, revival, and protection for nearby allies | Summons are temporary; team rescue is a major strength |
| Scholar | Utility and arcane focus | Item progression, analysis, and linked damage or healing | Payoff depends on observation and setup |
| Undertaker | Mobile melee; physical power and faith-based incantations | Agility and attack power from sustained hits; rapid gap-closing art | Ultimate access can benefit from ally arts and certain enemy attacks |
The launch guide’s broad role labels apply to the original eight: melee (Wylder, Guardian, Raider, Executor), ranged (Ironeye), ranged/spells (Duchess), spells (Recluse), and summons (Revenant). Scholar and Undertaker were added later, so their descriptions come from their current character and DLC pages rather than that launch roster guide.

How do you unlock Duchess and Revenant?
The official June 2025 guide says Duchess and Revenant unlock after early progression and specific requirements. It does not specify those requirements in the roster summary, so this guide does not infer exact unlock steps. The same guide identifies Wylder, Ironeye, Recluse, Guardian, Executor, and Raider as the starting roster.
Are Scholar and Undertaker playable characters?
Yes. Scholar and Undertaker are playable Nightfarers associated with the Forsaken Hollows DLC. Bandai Namco’s December 11, 2025 article introduced both, and both appear in the current official character gallery. They are not part of the original eight-character launch guide.
How to practice a Nightfarer before an expedition
- Pick a role to test: Decide whether you want ranged pressure, defensive support, summons, spellcasting, or close-range combat.
- Visit the Sparring Grounds: The official guide recommends practicing characters there, where you can test skills and equipment.
- Try the core skill: Practice the timing and positioning of abilities such as Marking, Restage, Retaliate, or Cursed Sword instead of relying on a role label alone.
- Practice team recovery: The guide notes that ranged weapons can provide a safer-distance way to revive teammates. In a group, learn how to create space and when to approach a downed ally.
These are broad playstyle distinctions, not a substitute for current balance data: the official sources cited here provide ability descriptions, not comparative win rates or performance tests.
