Yes, playing a video game does not by itself invalidate a Ramadan fast. Whether a particular game is appropriate is a separate question: its content, the time spent playing, and its effect on prayer, wellbeing, and responsibilities all matter.
Does playing a game break your fast?
Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta lists deliberate eating or drinking during Ramadan fasting hours among acts that invalidate the fast. Playing a game is not identified in that guidance as an invalidator. That means the question of whether a game breaks the fast is different from whether playing it is wise or spiritually beneficial. Dar al-Ifta’s guidance on things which invalidate the fast makes the distinction clear.
When may gaming be permissible?
Dar al-Ifta’s general approach is that recreation is permissible unless it involves a prohibited element. Its 15 June 2022 guidance on electronic games gives conditions rather than approving every game. It says play should not:
- Become addictive or cause physical, psychological, or mental harm.
- Involve gambling, prohibited conduct or content, or devotional rituals contrary to Muslim belief.
- Encourage violence or conflict.
- Lead someone to neglect prayer or other religious obligations, dependents, or other people’s rights.
These are broad criteria for evaluating games, not a review or ruling on every title. A game’s genre or platform alone does not establish whether it meets them. Read Dar al-Ifta’s conditions for permissible recreational electronic games for its full guidance.

Can gaming undermine the purpose of fasting?
A fast can remain formally valid while a person’s choices detract from its spiritual purpose. Dar al-Ifta describes fasting as prescribed to cultivate piety and relays a warning that someone may receive only hunger from fasting. This is not a game-specific ruling that gaming invalidates a fast; it is a reason to consider whether an activity is crowding out worship or good conduct. Advice varies in emphasis, and the sources should not be treated as expressing one universal view about every game. Dar al-Ifta sets out a conditional default: recreation may be permissible when it avoids prohibited elements and harmful consequences. The practical distinction is between formal validity and the quality of how someone observes the fast. Consider what the game contains and whether playing actually interferes with prayer, obligations, wellbeing, or responsibilities; do not assume every game or situation is the same.

How to decide about a specific game
- Check the content and mechanics. Consider whether the game involves gambling, prohibited material or conduct, or other elements that conflict with your religious commitments.
- Notice the effect of playing. If gaming becomes excessive, harms your wellbeing, or causes you to miss prayer or neglect obligations and other people’s rights, those consequences are concerns in Dar al-Ifta’s criteria.
- Ask a qualified scholar when details matter. If you need a ruling about a particular title, your circumstances, or a school of law, consult a trusted scholar who can consider those specifics.
