There is no single required route out of Atomfall’s quarantine zone. The game is built around optional Leads, conversations and exploration rather than a standard mission list. Start by gathering information in Slatten Dale and Wyndham, avoid fights that do not help you, and follow the clues that suit your approach. If you want a broad route toward the Interchange’s central system, you will need four atomic batteries and a Signal Redirector—but that is one progression path, not the only ending.
How Atomfall’s Leads guide you
Atomfall does not use a traditional quest or mission system. Instead, conversations, recordings, letters and other discoveries create Leads you can pursue at your own pace. Rich May, a Rebellion senior programmer, described them as “snippets of information that you will uncover as you explore the world” in an Xbox Wire guide published March 24, 2025. Rebellion’s head of design, Ben Fisher, said in a February 13, 2025 Xbox Wire article that all Leads are optional and connect in some way to the larger mystery.

That means you do not need to clear every clue in order or follow a single walkthrough route. Talk to people, read and listen to what you find, and use the map to keep track of places worth revisiting. On Survivor, waypoints are not automatically placed by default; manual map markers appear on the compass. If you want more direction, adjust the guidance through the Exploration settings. Where to go first after leaving the bunker
Slatten Dale gives you several useful leads early, but treat these as opportunities rather than mandatory objectives. The ringing phone box is directly ahead as you leave the bunker. Nat is downhill to the left; a tactful conversation can point you toward Molly, a nearby trader. You can also explore Wyndham Village for supplies and information.

Talk, listen and explore
- Answer the phone box. It is an immediate source of information when you enter Slatten Dale.
- Speak to Nat without needlessly antagonizing him. The conversation may lead you to Molly.
- Find Molly. She trades useful items, including tools such as a flashlight and metal detector.
- Look around Wyndham. Its church, shops, bakery and pub can provide clues and supplies. Protocol controls the village, and Captain Sims is at the bandstand.
You can approach these places in a different order or head elsewhere. The world is designed to let exploration and conversations determine what you investigate next.
Choose a difficulty and guidance level that fit
Atomfall offers Sightseer, Investigator, Brawler, Survivor and Veteran playstyles, along with further customization. These change the challenge across combat, survival and exploration. Rebellion describes Survivor as its recommended classic experience, but you do not have to start there: difficulty settings can be changed in Options. Treat them as adjustable accessibility and challenge choices, not a one-way commitment.
Exploration settings also let you choose how much guidance you want. If you prefer to work out destinations from clues, keep automatic waypoints off; if you find it easier to follow map directions, enable more guidance in the Exploration settings. You can still use manual markers to help navigate.

How to survive early encounters
Do not assume every hostile encounter needs to become a fight. Before committing, look at how many enemies are present, what weapons they carry, where you could move unnoticed, and whether you have a safe retreat. Rich May’s March 24, 2025 Xbox Wire advice is: “Before charging into any fight, our suggestion is ‘observe, plan, execute.’”
- Use stealth or go around. Staying out of trespassing areas and avoiding attention can reduce immediate aggression.
- Check your exit before attacking. A retreat can be a better outcome than spending ammunition or getting surrounded.
- Choose fights deliberately. Consider the number and equipment of opponents, and whether defeating them advances anything you care about.
- Do not count on an easy no-kill run. Rebellion says completing the game without killing is possible but extremely challenging.
Combat resources call for judgment rather than a blanket rule to hoard or spend freely. Rebellion warns that guns and ammunition are scarce, while Push Square describes resources as plentiful and advises using them. Search carefully, craft practical items, and spend supplies when they materially improve your chances instead of saving everything by default. Manage inventory, barter and crafting
There is limited carrying space, and money is useless inside the quarantine zone: trade through barter instead. Molly is an early trader and can offer useful tools, including a flashlight and metal detector. When your inventory fills, pneumatic dispatch tubes are especially useful: items stored in one tube can be retrieved from other tubes, making them shared storage across the world.

- Search for supplies and manuals as you explore.
- Trade surplus goods rather than carrying items you do not need.
- Use Training Stimulants to unlock the skills you have chosen.
- Craft and use practical items when the situation warrants them.
- Store items you want to keep in a pneumatic dispatch tube, then retrieve them from another tube when needed.

The Interchange is a major progression route, but it is not a compulsory escape checklist. Epic Games Store’s guide, published March 27, 2025, describes a path that powers the Interchange’s data cores and activates its central processor. Your allegiances, favors and choices affect what follows, and the game has multiple endings. The steps below explain the broad requirements without prescribing an ending.

- Find an entrance to the Interchange. There are entrances connected to Slatten Dale, Wyndham Village, Casterfell Woods and Skethermoor. Each region brings different enemy and trespassing risks, so choose an approach that fits your readiness.
- Gather at least four atomic batteries. You need them to power the four data cores. Epic’s guide identifies favors, barter and extracting batteries from defeated robots as possible ways to acquire them.
- Get the Signal Redirector. It is in the security room in the storage area at Skethermoor Prison. Having Captain Sims’ permission to interrogate Dr. Garrow can make entry easier.
- Power the cores and activate the central processor. Use the Redirector to reroute power from the four cores, then activate the processor. What happens next depends on your allegiances and choices.

Before starting The Red Strain
If you plan to play The Red Strain expansion, keep a save from before you achieve an ending. Rebellion Support says the expansion cannot be accessed in a save after an ending; reload a prior save to continue that playthrough or begin a new one. Its access instructions direct players to the Stafell Crag area through the Slate Mine Cave lift in Slatten Dale. A pneumatic tube prompts the related Lead, and you need the Signal Redirector at the perimeter wall.
